Cutaneous neural codes for shape

In the pursuit of peripheral neural representations of shape for the sense of touch, a series of two- and three-dimensional objects were stroked across the fingerpad of the anesthetized monkey and responses evoked in cutaneous mechanoreceptive primary afferent nerve fibers recorded. Responses of slowly adapting fibers (SAs) and rapidly adapting fibers (RAs) were recorded to the stroking of a cylinder, a sphere, several ellipsoids, and a pattern of alternating convex and concave cylindrical bars. The compressional force was maintained constant during a stroke, and the stroke velocities as well as orientations of the objects and stroke trajectories were varied between separate sets of trials. The major geometrical properties of the shapes were well represented in the spatiotemporal responses of the afferent fiber populations, particularly those of the SAs. Intensive parameters of shapes, such as the magnitude of change in skin curvature produced as a result of contact with the object surface, were encoded in the discharge rates of SAs and RAs, but this neural code was also influenced by changes in stroke velocity. Spatial parameters of shapes such as the extent of contact and the changes in contour that characterize a shape as belonging to a particular category (such as a sphere as opposed to a cylinder) are encoded in the spatially distributed discharge rates of the SA population. This spatial response profile provides a neural code that is probably invariant with moderate changes in the way the object comes in contact with the skin, such as the contact force or the orientation of the object.Key words: shape, cutaneous mechanoreceptors, primates, touch.

The mechanism by which action potentials (APs) are generated in afferent nerve fibers in the carotid body is unknown, but it is generally speculated to be release of an excitatory transmitter and synaptic depolarizing events. However, previous results suggested that Na+ channels in the afferent nerve fibers play an important role in this process. To better understand the potential mechanism by which Na+ channels may generate APs, a mathematical model of chemoreceptor nerve fibers that incorporated Hodgkin-Huxley-type Na+ channels with kinetics of activation and inactivation, as determined previously from recordings of petrosal chemoreceptor neurons, was constructed. While the density of Na+ channels was kept constant, spontaneous APs arose in nerve terminals as the axonal diameter was reduced to that in rat carotid body. AP excitability and pattern were similar to those observed in chemoreceptor recordings: 1) a random pattern at low- and high-frequency discharge rates, 2) a high sensitivity to reductions in extracellular Na+ concentration, and 3) a variation in excitability that increased with AP generation rate. Taken together, the results suggest that an endogenous process in chemoreceptor nerve terminals may underlie AP generation, a process independent of synaptic depolarizing events.

A methodology for incorporation of spatial variability in modeling non-point source groundwater nitrate contamination is presented. The methodology combines geostatistical simulation and unsaturated zone modeling for estimating the amount of nitrate loading to groundwater. Three dimensional soil nitrogen variability and 2-dimensional crop yield variability are used in quantifying potential benefits of spatially distributed nitrogen input. This technique, in combination with physical and chemical measurements, is utilized as a means of illustrating how the spatial statistical properties of nitrate leaching can be obtained for different scenarios of fixed and variable rate nitrogen applications.

Collision between rigid three-dimensional objects is a very common modelling problem in a wide spectrum of scientific disciplines, including Computer Science and Physics. It spans from realistic animation of polyhedral shapes for computer vision to the description of thermodynamic and dynamic properties in simple and complex fluids. For instance, colloidal particles of especially exotic shapes are commonly modelled as hard-core objects, whose collision test is key to correctly determine their phase and aggregation behaviour. In this work, we propose the Oriented Cuboid Sphere Intersection (OCSI) algorithm to detect collisions between prolate or oblate cuboids and spheres. We investigate OCSI’s performance by bench-marking it against a number of algorithms commonly employed in computer graphics and colloidal science: Quick Rejection First (QRI), Quick Rejection Intertwined (QRF) and a vectorized version of the OBB-sphere collision detection algorithm that explicitly uses SIMD Streaming Extension (SSE) intrinsics, here referred to as SSE-intr. We observed that QRI and QRF significantly depend on the specific cuboid anisotropy and sphere radius, while SSE-intr and OCSI maintain their speed independently of the objects’ geometry. While OCSI and SSE-intr, both based on SIMD parallelization, show excellent and very similar performance, the former provides a more accessible coding and user-friendly implementation as it exploits OpenMP directives for automatic vectorization.

Perceiving the shape of three-dimensional objects is essential for interacting with them in daily life. If objects are constructed from different materials, can the human visual system accurately estimate their three-dimensional shape? We varied the thickness, motion, opacity, and specularity of globally convex objects rendered in a photorealistic environment. These objects were presented under either dynamic or static viewing condition. Observers rated the overall convexity of these objects along the depth axis. Our results show that observers perceived solid transparent objects as flatter than the same objects rendered with opaque reflectance properties. Regional variation in local root-mean-square image contrast was shown to provide information that is predictive of perceived surface convexity.

This study proposes a low-complexity region-based authentication algorithm for three-dimensional (3D) polygonal models, based on local geometrical property evaluation. A vertex traversal scheme with a secret key is adopted to classify each vertex into one of two categories: embeddable vertices and reference vertices. An embeddable vertex is one with an authentication code embedded. The algorithm then uses reference vertices to calculate local geometrical properties for the corresponding embeddable vertices. For each embeddable vertex, we feed the number of reference vertices and local properties into a hash function to generate the authentication code. The embeddable vertex is then embedded with the authentication code, which is based on a simple message-digit substitution scheme. The proposed algorithm is of low complexity and distortion-controllable and possesses a higher and more adaptive embedding capacity and a higher embedding rate than most existing region-based authentication algorithms for 3D polygonal models. The experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed algorithm.
