Cercariae of Plagiorchis peterborensis sp. n. were obtained from Lymnaea stagnalis appressa, and the life cycle was completed using Aedes aegypti larvae and laboratory mice as experimental hosts. Description of the adult is based upon whole mounts and serial sections of 14-day-old worms. P. peterborensis resembles most closely P. muris, but differs in stylet shape, adult dimensions, and egg size.

The life cycle of T, crassiceps, which grows to the adult worm in the intestine of dogs and other canids and to a cysticercus in the laboratory mouse and other rodents, deviates from the usual pattern for taeniids because the embryo not only grows but later reproduces asexually by exogenous budding either subcutaneously or in body cavities. Differentiation of the bud was followed by removing cestodes at various stages of development. Living specimens, whole mounts, and serial sections, fixed and stained by various methods, were used. The subtegumental cells appear to dominate the process of budding at the abscolex end of the metacestode. Usually the bud separates from the budder after the lacuna is formed. The study demonstrates the importance of the subtegumental cells in the growth and differentiation of buds.

Strain variation in the mouse p53 gene sequences was investigated in various regions of the gene in 14 inbred strains of laboratory mice and one Japanese wild mouse strain (Mus musculus molossinus Mishima, M. MOL-MSM). Nucleotides within p53 introns 1 and 7, found to be identical in 10 of the laboratory strains (129/J, A/J, AKR/J, BALB/cJ, C3H/HeJ, C57BL/6J, CBA/J, CE/J, NZB, and SWR/J), were substituted for other nucleotide sequences in common with M. MOL-MSM and the four other strains (DBA/1J, DBA/2J, I/LnJ, and P/J). The latter were documented to have originated from a common ancestor. These observations thus suggested the possibility that the p53 gene may have become substituted by outcrossing of this ancestral strain with Asian mice; this is presumably related to the documentation that Japanese mice brought to western countries were used as laboratory mice early in this century. To establish p53 gene heterozygosity, female C3H/HeJ and male DBA/2J mice were mated to produce F1, hybrids (C3D2F1,). Electrophoresis of PCR fragments including polymorphic regions with or without restriction enzyme digestion, allowed clear distinction of paternal and maternal p53 alleles. These markers, therefore, should be useful for studying the loss of heterozygosity of the p53 gene during the carcinogenic process.Key words: p53 gene, polymorphism, Japanese wild mice, laboratory mice, loss of heterozygosity.

In transmission electron microscopy, the 3-dimensional structure of an object is usually obtained in one of two ways. For objects which can be included in one specimen, as for example with elements included in freeze- dried whole mounts and examined with a high voltage microscope, stereo pairs can be obtained which exhibit the 3-D structure of the element. For objects which can not be included in one specimen, the 3-D shape is obtained by reconstruction from serial sections. However, without stereo imagery, only detail which remains constant within the thickness of the section can be used in the reconstruction; consequently, the choice is between a low resolution reconstruction using a few thick sections and a better resolution reconstruction using many thin sections, generally a tedious chore. This paper describes an approach to 3-D reconstruction which uses stereo images of serial thick sections to reconstruct an object including detail which changes within the depth of an individual thick section.

Here, we present a comprehensive transcriptomics data set of Brugia malayi, its Wolbachia endosymbiont wBm, and its vector host. This study samples from 16 stages across the entire B. malayi life cycle, including stage 1 through 4 larvae, adult males and females, embryos, immature microfilariae, and mature microfilariae.

The genus Petasiger which belongs to the family Echinostomidae was proposed by Dietz in 1909, with Petasiger exaeretus as the type species. The description given by Dietz of this species is incomplete and it is proposed therefore to present below a more detailed account of the anatomy, based on an examination of whole mounts and serial sections. The material was obtained from the small intestine of cormorants shot on the coast of Cardigan Bay between Aberystwyth and Llanrhystyd. Five cormorants were shot in July, and of these two contained a large number of Petasiger exaeretus in the small intestine.

Adult animals have been used for most of the previous mammalian temperature selection studies, and relatively few systematic observations have been made with young animals. In this investigation, laboratory mice (Mus musculus), ranging in age from 1 to 84 days, were studied in a horizontal temperature gradient established along a 5-ft copper bar. Despite poorly developed locomotion and cold immobilization, it was shown that the temperature selection response is present at birth. The initially high level of selection appeared to be maintained for about 2 weeks, after which it began to decrease, rapidly at first, and then more slowly until the adult level was reached.
