This paper considers the effect of violence on the emotions of IS fighters and the resultant consequences of those emotions as a factor in their choice to use violence. By interrogating the human aspect of the fighters, I am focusing not on religion but on human agency as a factor in the violence. In this regard, this paper is about reorienting the question about the violence of IS not as “religious” violence but as a response to how these fighters perceive what is happening to them and their homeland. It is about politicising the political, about the violence of the state and its coalition of killing as opposed to a consistent effort to frame the violence into an explanation of “extremist religious ideology.” This shift in analysis is significant because of the increasing harm that is caused by the rise in Islamophobia where all Muslims are considered “radical” and are dehumanised. This is by no means a new project; rather it reflects the ongoing project of distortion of and animosity toward Islam, the suspension of ethics and the naturalisation of war. It is about an advocacy for war by hegemonic powers and (puppet regimes) states against racialised groups in the name of defending liberal values. Furthermore, the myth of religious violence has served to advance the goals of power which have been used in domestic and foreign policy to marginalise and dehumanise Muslims and to portray the violence of the secular state as a justified intervention in order to protect Western civilisation and the secular subject.

Based on intense fieldwork inside on Islamic community in Istanbul, the paper explores the way Islamic sociability forms structure daily interactions and foster connectedeness into religious brotherhood herein. In a counterweight to what I see as an excess of emphasis that recent trends in the Anthropology of Islam have put on notions of Islamic discipline and ethical self-fashioning, I offer an alternative perspective from which to look at how devout Muslims experience Islam and come to inhabit particular conceptions of self and personhood.

Recently, Melburn D. Thurman has argued that my handling of the James Mackay manuscript, an early 19th-century account of Plains native groups, is unsound. Many of Thurman's criticisms, specifically those concerning the date of the document, the details of Mackay's experience on the Missouri River, and the intent of my original article, stem from misrepresentation and misunderstanding. Thurman has refused, for example, to accept that my essay was a test of the document using archaeological data associated with the Arikara. In addition, Thurman portrays a narrow view of the past and a rather unique understanding of ethnohistorical methods. In this response to Thurman, I restate many of the points in my original article and provide an alternative perspective for studying the past.

Rebecca’s music offers the strongest argument for the style of musical collaboration Selznick fostered. Although earlier scholarship has focused on Hitchcock and Waxman, this chapter provides an alternative perspective informed by production records: how ideas and decisions flowed from producer, music director Forbes, and composer Franz Waxman to intermingle in one of the most compelling scores of the studio era. This chapter shows the extent to which Selznick and Forbes shaped the score’s formation and the degree to which non-original music from the preview score works in dialogue with Waxman’s associative themes, Robert Russell Bennett’s arrangements, and Leonid Raab’s orchestrations. Rebecca’s musical accompaniment epitomizes a delicate balance of collaborative tensions: the fruit of a system developed under Selznick and Forbes in the late 1930s.

Rapid ionization of Cs vapor in a heat pipe at 0.05 torr was achieved by pumping the 6s 2S½ – 7p 2P½ transition (f=0.007)1 with a flash-pumped dye laser at 4593.2A and I MW power output. Photoabsorptian initiated at the end of the laser pulse(≃ 0.5/s) showed the 5p5ns and nd series below and above the 5p52P3/2 threshold at 535.4A. Broad Beutler - Fano resonances appeared in the d series above threshold. The spectrum was recorded photographically on a 10.7m grazing incidence spectrograph using a continuum background generated by a BRV high-voltage spark source with a uranium anode. We will compare the line-shapes and the quantum defect (Lu-Fano2) plot with the predictions of a relativistic random phase calculation.

This article argues that different cultures and their respective knowledge systems should partake to the sustainability debate. The focus is on insights that indigenous knowledge may provide, analyzing the principles which oversee indigenous relationship with nature, like reciprocity and caretaking. These principles move from a profound sense of unity and interconnectedness and put emphasis on the importance of giving back to nature. They offer an alternative perspective on sustainability that challenges the Western view. Such a view is still focused on maintaining the possibility of exploitation and embedded in a sense of separation from nature. The article discusses the need of creating a laboratory for sustainability, that is, a genuinely pluralist space in which multiple cultural expertise can interact and mutually enrich, yet maintaining their distinction and integrity. The main motivation of such an endevor should be to redefine the notion of sustainability in a more refined and thoughtful way: this is something vital for present and future generations.

AbstractActively tunable and reconfigurable wavefront shaping by optical metasurfaces poses a significant technical challenge often requiring unconventional materials engineering and nanofabrication. Most wavefront-shaping metasurfaces can be considered “local” in that their operation depends on the responses of individual meta-units. In contrast, “nonlocal” metasurfaces function based on the modes supported by many adjacent meta-units, resulting in sharp spectral features but typically no spatial control of the outgoing wavefront. Recently, nonlocal metasurfaces based on quasi-bound states in the continuum have been shown to produce designer wavefronts only across the narrow bandwidth of the supported Fano resonance. Here, we leverage the enhanced light-matter interactions associated with sharp Fano resonances to explore the active modulation of optical spectra and wavefronts by refractive-index tuning and mechanical stretching. We experimentally demonstrate proof-of-principle thermo-optically tuned nonlocal metasurfaces made of silicon and numerically demonstrate nonlocal metasurfaces that thermo-optically switch between distinct wavefront shapes. This meta-optics platform for thermally reconfigurable wavefront shaping requires neither unusual materials and fabrication nor active control of individual meta-units.
