Feature selection is the problem of identifying a subset of the most relevant features in the context of model construction. This problem has been well studied and plays a vital role in machine learning. In this paper we present three randomized algorithms for feature selection. They are generic in nature and can be applied for any learning algorithm. Proposed algorithms can be thought of as a random walk in the space of all possible subsets of the features. We demonstrate the generality of our approaches using three different applications. The simulation results show that our feature selection algorithms outperforms some of the best known algorithms existing in the current literature.

Feature selection is an important topic in data mining, especially for high dimensional dataset. Feature selection is a process commonly used in machine learning, wherein subsets of the features available from the data are selected for application of learning algorithm. The best subset contains the least number of dimensions that most contribute to accuracy. Feature selection methods can be decomposed into three main classes, one is filter method, another one is wrapper method and third one is embedded method. This chapter presents an empirical comparison of feature selection methods and its algorithm. In view of the substantial number of existing feature selection algorithms, the need arises to count on criteria that enable to adequately decide which algorithm to use in certain situation. This chapter reviews several fundamental algorithms found in the literature and assess their performance in a controlled scenario.

Fake or false information on social media platforms is a significant challenge that leads to deliberately misleading users due to the inclusion of rumors, propaganda, or deceptive information about a person, organization, or service. Twitter is one of the most widely used social media platforms, especially in the Arab region, where the number of users is steadily increasing, accompanied by an increase in the rate of fake news. This drew the attention of researchers to provide a safe online environment free of misleading information. This paper aims to propose a smart classification model for the early detection of fake news in Arabic tweets utilizing Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques, Machine Learning (ML) models, and Harris Hawks Optimizer (HHO) as a wrapper-based feature selection approach. Arabic Twitter corpus composed of 1862 previously annotated tweets was utilized by this research to assess the efficiency of the proposed model. The Bag of Words (BoW) model is utilized using different term-weighting schemes for feature extraction. Eight well-known learning algorithms are investigated with varying combinations of features, including user-profile, content-based, and words-features. Reported results showed that the Logistic Regression (LR) with Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF) model scores the best rank. Moreover, feature selection based on the binary HHO algorithm plays a vital role in reducing dimensionality, thereby enhancing the learning model’s performance for fake news detection. Interestingly, the proposed BHHO-LR model can yield a better enhancement of 5% compared with previous works on the same dataset.

Extracting features from input data is vital for successful classification and machine learning tasks. Classification is the process of declaring an object into one of the predefined categories. Many different feature selection and feature extraction methods exist, and they are being widely used. Feature extraction, obviously, is a transformation of large input data into a low dimensional feature vector, which is an input to classification or a machine learning algorithm. The task of feature extraction has major challenges, which will be discussed in this paper. The challenge is to learn and extract knowledge from text datasets to make correct decisions. The objective of this paper is to give an overview of methods used in feature extraction for various applications, with a dataset containing a collection of texts taken from social media.

Human motion recognition based on inertial sensor is a new research direction in the field of pattern recognition. It carries out preprocessing, feature selection, and feature selection by placing inertial sensors on the surface of the human body. Finally, it mainly classifies and recognizes the extracted features of human action. There are many kinds of swing movements in table tennis. Accurately identifying these movement modes is of great significance for swing movement analysis. With the development of artificial intelligence technology, human movement recognition has made many breakthroughs in recent years, from machine learning to deep learning, from wearable sensors to visual sensors. However, there is not much work on movement recognition for table tennis, and the methods are still mainly integrated into the traditional field of machine learning. Therefore, this paper uses an acceleration sensor as a motion recording device for a table tennis disc and explores the three-axis acceleration data of four common swing motions. Traditional machine learning algorithms (decision tree, random forest tree, and support vector) are used to classify the swing motion, and a classification algorithm based on the idea of integration is designed. Experimental results show that the ensemble learning algorithm developed in this paper is better than the traditional machine learning algorithm, and the average recognition accuracy is 91%.

In this chapter, we are interested in proteins classification starting from their primary structures. The goal is to automatically affect proteins sequences to their families. The main originality of the approach is that we directly apply the text categorization framework for the protein classification with very minor modifications. The main steps of the task are clearly identified: we must extract features from the unstructured dataset, we use the fixed length n-grams descriptors; we select and combine the most relevant one for the learning phase; and then, we select the most promising learning algorithm in order to produce accurate predictive model. We obtain essentially two main results. First, the approach is credible, giving accurate results with only 2-grams descriptors length. Second, in our context where many irrelevant descriptors are automatically generated, we must combine aggressive feature selection algorithms and low variance classifiers such as SVM (Support Vector Machine).

Purpose According to the World Health Organization, by 2025, the contribution of chronic disease is expected to rise by 73% compared to all deaths and it is considered as global burden of disease with a rate of 60%. These diseases persist for a longer duration of time, which are almost incurable and can only be controlled. Cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease (CKD) and diabetes mellitus are considered as three major chronic diseases that will increase the risk among the adults, as they get older. CKD is considered a major disease among all these chronic diseases, which will increase the risk among the adults as they get older. Overall 10% of the population of the world is affected by CKD and it is likely to double in the year 2030. The paper aims to propose novel feature selection approach in combination with the machine-learning algorithm which can early predict the chronic disease with utmost accuracy. Hence, a novel feature selection adaptive probabilistic divergence-based feature selection (APDFS) algorithm is proposed in combination with the hyper-parameterized logistic regression model (HLRM) for the early prediction of chronic disease. Design/methodology/approach A novel feature selection APDFS algorithm is proposed which explicitly handles the feature associated with the class label by relevance and redundancy analysis. The algorithm applies the statistical divergence-based information theory to identify the relationship between the distant features of the chronic disease data set. The data set required to experiment is obtained from several medical labs and hospitals in India. The HLRM is used as a machine-learning classifier. The predictive ability of the framework is compared with the various algorithm and also with the various chronic disease data set. The experimental result illustrates that the proposed framework is efficient and achieved competitive results compared to the existing work in most of the cases. Findings The performance of the proposed framework is validated by using the metric such as recall, precision, F1 measure and ROC. The predictive performance of the proposed framework is analyzed by passing the data set belongs to various chronic disease such as CKD, diabetes and heart disease. The diagnostic ability of the proposed approach is demonstrated by comparing its result with existing algorithms. The experimental figures illustrated that the proposed framework performed exceptionally well in prior prediction of CKD disease with an accuracy of 91.6. Originality/value The capability of the machine learning algorithms depends on feature selection (FS) algorithms in identifying the relevant traits from the data set, which impact the predictive result. It is considered as a process of choosing the relevant features from the data set by removing redundant and irrelevant features. Although there are many approaches that have been already proposed toward this objective, they are computationally complex because of the strategy of following a one-step scheme in selecting the features. In this paper, a novel feature selection APDFS algorithm is proposed which explicitly handles the feature associated with the class label by relevance and redundancy analysis. The proposed algorithm handles the process of feature selection in two separate indices. Hence, the computational complexity of the algorithm is reduced to O(nk+1). The algorithm applies the statistical divergence-based information theory to identify the relationship between the distant features of the chronic disease data set. The data set required to experiment is obtained from several medical labs and hospitals of karkala taluk ,India. The HLRM is used as a machine learning classifier. The predictive ability of the framework is compared with the various algorithm and also with the various chronic disease data set. The experimental result illustrates that the proposed framework is efficient and achieved competitive results are compared to the existing work in most of the cases.
