This is a retrospective analysis of 21 patients with documented enchondroma of the hand. They were operated on between 1980 to 2000 with conventional curettage nd bone grafting. The objective of this study is to analyse the chance of recurrence and evaluate the effectiveness of surgical treatment. One patient had recurrence after six years. Longer follow-up period is recommended as there is a possibility of recurrence even after five years. This study revealed that enchondroma of the hand is more common on the ulnar site.

Purpose Despite the early diagnosis and treatment of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), some older children still need open reduction. It is usually difficult to get a satisfactory reduction particularly in patients with acetabular defect. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the short-term outcomes of acetabulum reaming and sartorius muscle pedicle iliac bone grafting in the treatment of older children with DDH and acetabular defect. Methods The records of 15 patients with DDH (mean age 113.9 months (sd 29); 17 hips) who were treated with the reported technique between February 2015 and January 2017 were retrospectively reviewed. All patients acquired regular clinical and radiographic follow-ups, and alterations in the acetabular index, centre-edge angle and acetabular head index were measured. Joint function and radiographic results were evaluated with McKay and Severin modified criteria, respectively. Results A total of 15 patients were followed up for mean 32.4 months (sd 6.9). The percentages of excellent and good conditions were 94.1% (16/17) according to the Severin modified criteria and 88.2% (15/17) according to the McKay modified criteria. Avascular necrosis of the femoral head and redislocation only occurred in one hip. No cases of ankylosis or bone graft absorption occurred during the follow-up. Conclusion Reaming the acetabulum and sartorius muscle pedicle iliac bone grafting for repairing the acetabular defect can recover the arcuate structure by increasing the volume of the acetabulum, which is beneficial for achieving a concentric reduction. The short-term outcome was satisfactory, while the long-term results need to be further observed. Level of Evidence IV – retrospective study

The purpose of this study was to assess the results of dorsal intercarpal ligament capsulodesis (Mayo technique) for cases of chronic scapholunate instability and to specify the indications according to the severity of instability. A retrospective analysis was conducted and examined dorsal intercarpal ligament capsulodesis procedures performed for chronic scapholunate instability without intercarpal or radiocarpal arthritis. One-hundred and twenty patients were examined by an independent observer (48 predynamic, 48 dynamic and 24 static scapholunate instabilities). The follow-up period averaged 54 months (range 24–127). Mean final Mayo wrist score was 70, mean final Patient-Rated Wrist Evaluation was 27 and mean final QuickDASH score was 26. Functional, clinical and radiological data were improved for the operated patients. We concluded that dorsal intercarpal ligament capsulodesis is a good option for treating early stages of scapholunate instability. Level of evidence: IV

AbstractThe purpose of this retrospective study was to describe and evaluate the results of arytenoidopexy performed by the external laterocervical approach in 15 consecutive children presenting bilateral vocal fold paralysis causing life-threatening airway compromise. Mean age at the time of surgery was 20 months and mean follow-up was 42 months. At the end of follow-up all patients were in good health and did not need special care for breathing. No abduction movement has been observed on the opposite vocal fold since arytenoidopexy. One failure subsequently required arytenoidectomy. The findings of this study suggest that arytenoidopexy is an effective surgical treatment for life-threatening bilateral vocal fold paralysis in young children.

The hypothenar hammer syndrome is an uncommon lesion of the ulnar artery caused by repetitive trauma to the ulnar portion of the hand. It characteristically occurs in the dominant hand of middle-aged craftsmen, but also in athletes practising various types of sports. We present a retrospective study of nine patients between 1988 and 1999. The follow-up ranged from 1 to 10 years. We recommend surgical treatment, by resection of the involved arterial segment and revascularization either by direct anastomosis or by means of a venous interpositional graft.

Retrospective analysis of treatment results for 36 patients (31 females, 5 males) aged 2 - 31 years with congenital scoliosis was performed. Malformation of vertebrae was present in 23 patients, disorder of segmentation - in 9, combined anomalies - in 4 patients. Posterior fusion was performed in 15, combined anterior and posterior fusion - in 7, removal of the semivertebra - 13, and VEPTR technique - in 1 patient. Treatment results were assessed by roentgenographic data and the results of SRS-24 questionnaires. Follow up period made up from 1 to 7 years. Differentiated approach to treatment enabled to create conditions for the proper development of the spine and formation of adequate frontal and sagittal balance as well as to increase patient’s self-appraisal and daily activity.

Object The authors conducted a retrospective study to examine data on rates of obliteration of arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) with use of various combinations of treatment modalities based on Gamma Knife surgery (GKS). The authors believe that this study is the first to report on patients treated with embolization followed by staged GKS. Methods The authors identified 150 patients who underwent GKS for treatment of AVMs between 1994 and 2004. In a retrospective study, 4 independent groups emerged based on the various combinations of treatment: 92 patients who underwent unstaged GKS, 28 patients who underwent embolization followed by unstaged GKS, 23 patients who underwent staged GKS, and 7 patients who underwent embolization followed by staged GKS. A minimum of 3 years of follow-up after the last GKS treatment was required for inclusion in the retrospective analysis. Angiograms, MR images, or CT scans at follow-up were required for calculating rates of obliteration of AVMs. Results Fifty-seven of 150 patients (38%) supplied angiograms, and overall obliteration was confirmed in 43 of these 57 patients (75.4%). An additional 37 patients had follow-up MR images or CT scans. The overall obliteration rate, including patients with follow-up angiograms and patients with follow-up MR images or CT scans, was 68 of 94 (72.3%). Patients who underwent unstaged GKS had a follow-up rate of 58.7% (54 of 92) and an obliteration rate of 75.9% (41 of 54). Patients who underwent embolization followed by unstaged GKS had a follow-up rate of 53.5% (15 of 28) and an obliteration rate of 60.0% (9 of 15). Patients who underwent staged GKS had a follow-up rate of 82.6% (19 of 23) and an obliteration rate of 73.7% (14 of 19). Patients who underwent embolization followed by staged GKS had a follow-up rate of 85.7% (6 of 7) and an obliteration rate of 66.7% (4 of 6). Conclusions Gamma Knife surgery is an effective means of treating AVMs. Embolization prior to GKS may reduce AVM obliteration rates. Staged GKS is a promising method for obtaining high obliteration rates when treating larger AVMs in eloquent locations.

The clinicopathological features of cervical fractures in 56 dogs were reviewed. "Hit by car" (HBC) was the most common inciting cause, and the axis and atlas were the vertebrae most frequently affected. Surgical treatment was associated with high (36%) perioperative mortality. However, all dogs that survived the perioperative period achieved functional recovery. Functional recovery was achieved in 25 (89%) of 28 nonsurgically treated dogs with adequate follow-up. Overall, severity of neurological deficits (nonambulatory status) and prolonged interval (five days or longer) from trauma to referral were associated with poorer outcome. Nonsurgical treatment is a viable therapeutic approach for many dogs with cervical fractures. Early neck immobilization and prompt referral are recommended, because delay in referral decreases the likelihood of functional recovery.

Primary intracerebral hematoma constitutes about 10-15% of all strokes and is associated with high mortality and severe disability. Surgical treatment of intracerebral hemorrhage is quite controversial. It is believed that minimal invasive stereotactic surgery may reduce hematoma volume and decrease secondary neurotoxicity. The technical note of stereotactic surgery has been illustrated. A retrospective study from March 2016 to March 2018 has been conducted and all patients who underwent stereotactic evacuation of hematoma were included in this study. Baseline characteristics of patients and outcome in terms of Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) and Modified Rankin Scale (mRS) have been shown. We have found significant improvement in GCS postoperatively, however mRS did not improve immediately but was significantly better in three months follow up period.

Surgical treatment for metacarpal neck fractures may be indicated for malrotation, palmar angulation exceeding 30° or metacarpal shortening exceeding 3 mm, although these thresholds have not been firmly established. In a retrospective study, we compared the clinical and radiographic results of 54 patients with displaced fifth metacarpal neck fractures who were treated with either medial locking plates (14 patients) or retrograde intramedullary K-wires (40 patients). At a mean follow-up of 26 months (range 12 to 62), metacarpal shortening and angulation were 2 mm greater and 4° greater, respectively, in the K-wire group. The plate group had an earlier return to work and greater aesthetic satisfaction, but operative time and complication incidence were higher. Range of motion, time to union, grip strength and Quick Disability of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand scores were similar. We conclude that medial plating offers no clear advantage over K-wire fixation in treating metacarpal neck fractures. Level of evidence: III
