Conductors with sector-shaped ice are susceptible to galloping. To prevent and control galloping, it is necessary to study the conductor aerodynamic characteristics. Wind tunnel tests were performed to study the influence of two shape parameters (ice thickness and ice angle) of a conductor with sector-shaped ice on the aerodynamic characteristics considering the roughness of the surface. In addition, the unstable areas for galloping are discussed according to Den Hartog theory and Nigol theory. The results show that with increasing ice thickness, the aerodynamic coefficient curves fluctuate more strongly, and galloping tends to occur; with increasing ice angle, the unstable area becomes larger according to Nigol theory, and the increasing drag coefficient will suppress the unstable areas according to Den Hartog theory. With the increasing two shape parameters, the most affected ranges of the aerodynamic coefficient curves are 150–180∘.

Abstract Assessing the aerodynamic characteristics of long-span bridges is fundamental for their design. Depending on the terrain complexity and local wind conditions, episodes of large angles of attack (AoA) of 15° may be observed. However, such large AoAs ( above 10°) are often overlooked in the design process. This paper studies the aerodynamics properties of a flow around a single-box girder for a wide range of AoAs, from –20° to 20°, using numerical simulations. The simulations are based on a 2D unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) approach using the k − ω SST turbulence model with a Reynolds number of 1.6 × 105. Numerically obtained aerodynamic static coefficients were compared to wind tunnel test data. The CFD results were generally in good agreement with the wind tunnel tests, especially for small AoAs and positive AoAs. More discrepancies were observed for large negative AoA, likely due to the limitation of modelling 3D railings with 2D simulations. The simulated velocity deficit downstream of the deck was consistent with the one measured in full-scale using short-range Doppler wind lidar instruments. Finally, the Strouhal number from the CFD simulations were in agreement with the value obtained from the full-scale data.

Wind tunnel tests were carried out to obtain the static aerodynamic characteristics of crescent iced 4-bundled conductors with different ice thicknesses, initial ice accretion angles, bundle spaces, and wind attack angles. The test models were made of the actual conductors and have a real rough surface. Test results show that the influence of wake interference on the drag coefficients of leeward subconductors is obvious. The interference angle range is larger than 20° and the drag coefficient curves of leeward subconductors have a sudden decrease phenomenon at some certain wind attack angles. The absolute value of the lift and moment coefficient increases with the increase of the ice thickness. In addition, the galloping of the iced subconductor may occur at the angle of wind attack near ±20° and the wake increases the moment coefficient. The variation of initial ice accretion angle has a significant influence on the aerodynamic coefficients. The aerodynamic coefficient curves exhibit a “moving” phenomenon at different initial ice accretion angles. The bundle spaces have a great influence on the moment coefficient of leeward thin ice-coated conductors. With the increase of ice thickness, the bundle spaces generally have little influence on the aerodynamic coefficients.

Abstract The paper presents results of wind tunnel tests of the Experimental Rocket Platform (ERP), which is developed in Institute of Aviation. It is designed as an easy accessible and affordable platform for microgravity experiments. Proposed design enables to perform experiments in microgravity for almost 150 seconds with apogee of about 100 km. The full-scale model of the ERP has been investigated in the T-3 wind tunnel in Institute of Aviation. During the investigation, the aerodynamic loads of the rocket has been measured for the angle of attack up to 10° and the different rotation angle around the longitudinal axis (up to 90°, depending on the configuration). Three configurations has been investigated: • without fins and boosters • with fins and without boosters • with fins and boosters Additionally, the measurements of velocity field around the ERP using the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) has been performed. Based on the wind tunnel test, an influence of fins and boosters on aerodynamic characteristics of the rocket has been described. Results of the wind tunnel tests show relatively high contribution of boosters in total aerodynamic drag. Some conclusions concerning performance and stability of the rocket have been presented.

Application of non-pneumatic tire (NPT) has been increased during the last decade. The aerodynamic characteristics of the wheel with NPT has been studied due to significance on improvement of handling and reduction of fuel consumption. In this paper, first, an original NPT model was simulated by CATIA software, and the influence of NPT structural parameters on aerodynamic characteristics was studied by Fluent software. The simulation calculation results showed that: the reduction of tire width and spoke length, and the increase of spoke thickness can effectively decrease aerodynamic coefficient. Then, the MIRA model was used to study the influence of NPT on aerodynamic characteristics of the whole vehicle under driving conditions. Studies showed that: NPT increased the resistance of the whole vehicle, and 63.1% of the resistance at the wheels was provided by the front wheels. Finally, the wind tunnel test was conducted to study aerodynamic characteristics of the optimized NPT model under static conditions and verify the simulation calculation.

Shape optimization has important effects on drag reduction of the near-space airship. This paper uses the Bezier curve to parameterize the hull of the airship. Based on multiple island genetic algorithms, the optimization platform combined with different programs is established, and a kind of low drag hull is obtained by optimization. Force measurement and flow observation wind tunnel test are used to research the aerodynamic characteristics of the ellipsoid hull and the optimized hull. Results show that, optimization mainly increases the volume ratio and the favorable pressure gradient region of the hull, therefore the surface area is reduced and transition position of the hull can be delayed. Compared with the LOTTE shape, transition position of the optimized shape moved backward by 13.78%, and the volume drag coefficient is reduced by 11.1%. It is known from the wind tunnel test that compared with the ellipsoid hull, transition position of the optimized shape moves backward obviously. Under the condition that the volume Reynolds number is 2.97 × 106, compared with the ellipsoid hull, volume drag coefficient of the optimized shape can reduce by 39.0%.

A kind of novel airfoil sail is proposed in this paper based on the research of traditional arc wing sails. The aerodynamic characteristic- the lift coefficient and drag coefficient is numerically calculated with FLUENT 6.0 and the results are verified by wind tunnel test. It is proved that the aerodynamic characteristic of the novel sail is much better than the arc wing sail.

A wind tunnel test was conducted to compare the characteristics of low speed stability and control for aircraft with conventional tail and V-tail configurations. Comparison was made in terms of static directional stability at selected test speed of 40 m/s, which corresponds to Reynolds number of 0.1622 x 106 based on the chord. Three types of simplified tail-only model were tested in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia's Low Speed Wind Tunnel (UTM-LST). Results show that the V-tail configuration greatly affects the aerodynamic characteristics in directional stability as the side force and yaw moment tends to vary linearly with yaw angles up to 25 degrees, compared to conventional tail that has linear characteristics up to only 10 degrees yaw

A new quad bundle conductor galloping model considering wake effect is proposed to solve the problem of different aerodynamic coefficients of each subconductor of iced quad bundle conductor. Based on the quasistatic theory, a new 3-DOF (three degrees of freedom) galloping model of iced quad bundle conductors is established, which can accurately reflect the energy transfer and galloping of quad bundle conductor in three directions. After a series of formula derivations, the conductor stability judgment formula is obtained. In the wind tunnel test, according to the actual engineering situation, different variables are set up to accurately simulate the galloping of iced quad bundle conductor under the wind, and the aerodynamic coefficient is obtained. Finally, according to the stability judgment formula of this paper, calculate the critical wind speed of conductor galloping through programming. The dates of wind tunnel test and calculation in this paper can be used in the antigalloping design of transmission lines.

Liujiaxia Bridge is a truss stiffening girder suspension bridge which span is 536m, and it is the narrowest suspension bridge with the same scale, so the problems of flutter stability are prominent. Results of wind tunnel test show that its critical velocity cannot meet the requirements without any aerodynamic measures. Based on above considerations, seven kinds of aerodynamic measures are proposed, respectively wind tunnel tests are conducted. The results show that the program, in which the upper central stable board is 1.12m high and the under central stable board is 1.28m high, can meet the requirements. The results of this study provide some references to solving the problem of wind-resistant stability of narrow deck suspension bridge.
