The 0.96Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3–0.04K0.5Bi0.5TiO3 (NKBT96/4) lead-free single crystal was successfully grown by top-seeded solution growth method. The effective segregation coefficient for K was calculated to be 0.20. X-ray powder diffraction measurement showed that the as-grown crystal possesses rhombohedral perovskite structure at room temperature. X-ray rock curve measure indicated that the as-grown single crystal owned relatively higher quality. The NKBT96/4 single crystal exhibits apparent diffused dielectric behavior, where the diffusiveness index α is 1.79 for the [001]-oriented crystal planes. A notable thermal hysteresis, ΔT h , of 25°C was disclosed for the tetragonal antiferroelectric-tetragonal paraelectric phase transition in the dielectric property studies between heating and cooling. The highest remnant polarization, P r , 16.8 μC/cm2, was obtained at 100°C. The electromechanical coupling coefficient kt of the [001]-oriented crystal planes at room temperature was determined to be 38% using resonance–antiresonance technique. The room temperature piezoelectric constant d33 reaches 120 pC/N.

Lead-free (1-x)K0.49Na0.51NbO3-xLiTaO3 (x=0.00-0.07) piezoceramics were fabricated by the conventional solid-state sintering method, the effects of LiTaO3 content on the phase structure and piezoelectric properties of the ceramics were investigated. All the ceramics show single perovskite structure with a phase transition from an orthorhombic symmetry to a tetragonal one across an orthorhombic-tetragonal coexistence region with 0.04<x<0.06. For the ceramic sample with x=0.05, due to the coexistence of orthorhombic and tetragonal phases near room temperature, enhanced piezoelectric constant d33=236 pC/N and planar electromechanical coupling coefficient kp=40.9% are observed. In addition to other good electrical properties such as εr=969, tgδ=0.015 and Qm=41, this ceramic is a promising lead-free piezoelectric material.

An crystal-growth technique for single crystal x-ray structure analysis of high-pressure forms of hydrogen-bonded crystals is proposed. We used alcohol mixture (methanol: ethanol = 4:1 in volumetric ratio), which is a widely used pressure transmitting medium, inhibiting the nucleation and growth of unwanted crystals. In this paper, two kinds of single crystals which have not been obtained using a conventional experimental technique were obtained using this technique: ice VI at 1.99 GPa and MgCl2·7H2O at 2.50 GPa at room temperature. Here we first report the crystal structure of MgCl2·7H2O. This technique simultaneously meets the requirement of hydrostaticity for high-pressure experiments and has feasibility for further in-situ measurements.

Cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanocrystals (NCs) were self-assembled and in-situ immobilized on the dithiocarbamate (DTCs)-functionalized polyethylene glycol terephthalate (PET) substrates between the organic (carbon disulfide diffused in n-hexane) –aqueous (ethylenediamine and Cd2+ dissolved in water) interface at room temperature. Powder X-ray diffraction measurement revealed the hexagonal structure of CdS nanocrystals. Morphological studies performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) showed the island-like structure of CdS nanocrystals on PET substrates, as well as energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) confirmed the stoichiometries of CdS nanocrystals. The optical properties of DTCs modified CdS nanocrystals were thoroughly investigated by ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy (UV-vis) and fluorescence spectroscopy. The as-prepared DTCs present intrinsic hydrophobicity and strong affinity for CdS nanocrystals.

Langasite (La3Ga5SiO14: denoted by LGS) single crystal is one of the lead free piezoelectric materials with high piezoelectricity that is maintained up to its melting point (1470°C). Although LGS single crystals have usually been grown by Czochralski (CZ) method in oxygen contained atmosphere to prevent evaporation of Ga, they were grown by the vertical Bridgman (VB) method in Ar atmosphere without oxygen, and their properties were evaluated in this work. Transparent and colorless LGS single crystals were successfully obtained without Ga evaporation by the VB method in Ar atmosphere, and their resistivity at room temperature was much higher than that grown by conventional CZ method. Piezoelectric constant d11 of the crystal grown by the VB method was 6 x 10-12 C/N, which was close to that of the crystal grown by CZ method. The colorless transparent LGS single crystal turned to orange and its resistivity decreased by annealing in air. Since an orange-colored transparent LGS single crystal has been grown by conventional CZ method, this indicates that color change and the resistivity decrease of LGS crystal is caused by extra interstitial oxygen atoms in the crystal.

In this paper, the effects of different sintering temperature on the microstructure and piezoelectric properties of Pb(Nb2/3Zn1/3)0.03(Zr52Ti48)0.97O3(PNZZT) ceramic samples were investigated. The Pb(Nb2/3Zn1/3)0.03(Zr52Ti48)0.97O3 ceramics materials was prepared by a conventional mixed oxide method. In the period of the experiment, the relationship between crystallographic phase and microstructure were analyzed by X-ray diffraction(XRD) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM) respectively. The XRD patterns shows that all of the ceramic samples are with a tetragonal perovskite structure. Along with sintering temperature increased and the x is 0.03, the grain size gradually become big. Through this experiment, it has been found that when the x is 0.03 and sintered at 1130°C for 2 h, the grains grow well, the grain-boundary intersection of the sample combined well and the porosity of the ceramics decreased, an excellent comprehensive electrical properties of the Pb(Nb2/3Zn1/3)0.03(Zr52Ti48)0.97O3 samples can be obtained. Its best electrical properties are as follows: dielectric constant (ε) is 1105, dielectric loss(tg) is 0.017, electromechanical coupling coefficient (Kp) is 0.287, piezoelectric constant(d33) is 150PC/N

We report on the velocity V and the electromechanical coupling coefficient K2 of the first and the second leaky surface acoustic waves in various propagation directions in the a-plane AlN single-crystal. For c-propagation direction, the second leaky wave exhibited the velocity of 11016 m/s and K2 of 0.45%. For this direction, the temperature coefficient of frequency was found to be -30 ppm/°C. A near match of the velocities of the plane and leaky waves in the a-plane AlN allowed us to establish analytical relationships between the piezoelectric and elastic constants. A full set of elastic and piezoelectric constants of AlN has been evaluated by fitting the measured and calculated dependencies of velocities and electromechanical coupling coefficients on the propagation direction for both Rayleigh and leaky waves.

The room-temperature single-crystal X-ray structural characterization of the title compound (tpyH2)2[Tb(OH2)8]Cl7.~2⅓H2O is recorded. Crystals are triclinic, Pī , a 17.063(5), b 16.243(3), c 7.878(3) Ǻ, α 84.78(2), β 84.39(3), γ 87.81(2)°, Z = 2 formula units; 3167 'observed' diffractometer reflections were refined by full-matrix least-squares procedures to a residual of 0.057. Notable features of interest of the compound are the 'chelation' of chloride ions by the terpyridinium cations , and the existence of a free [Tb(OH2)8]2+ cation in the presence of an abundance of chloride ions.
