Sources of lanthanides in soils and estimation of their hazards

In recent years, an increase in the input of lanthanides (Ln), an important group of heavy metals (HMs), has been observed in the environment throughout the world (in particular soil). Anthropogenic Ln sources are mainly connected to phosphogypsum, Ln-bearing microfertilizer and micronutrients, and mine waste. Therefore, assessment of hazards associated with the presence of Ln in the soil is an urgent issue. Hazardousness, depending strongly upon the buffer capacity of a specified soil, is determined by the organic matter content, the pH value and other soil properties. For a standard soil (containing 10% organic matter and 25% clay), the discrepancy of the hazardousness of HMs can be estimated based on the maximum permissible concentration (MPC) values proposed by ecologists in the Netherlands. Low levels of Ln contamination in the soil are found, making it possible to classify them in the group of moderately and weakly acting pollutants. The MPC value proposed for cerium (Ce) in the standard soil is 44 mg/kg. Approximate MPC values for several other lanthanides (Ln, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd and Dy) in soils were proposed based on MPC values for freshwater sediments in the Netherlands. According to the MPC value, Ln falls into the group of moderate- and low-hazardous heavy metals.

Distribution of organic matter and effect of wetland types and pH on organic matter were studied in sediment of lakeside belt in east Dongting Lake according to taking 56 samples from surface to 20cm and 52 samples from 20cm to 40cm. The results showed that the average content of organic matter was 15.40g/kg from surface to 20cm and 12.02g/kg from 20cm to 40cm in sediment of lakeside belt in east Dongting Lake. Spatial distribution of organic matter could be expressed as middle variation. Wetland types were classed into silt beach, lake marsh beach and reed beach in Dongting Lake region and influenced distribution of organic matter because of difference variance on hydraulic dynamics condition and retarding effect of vegetation on water flow velocity. Order of organic matter content in sediment was the lake marsh beach > reed beach > silt beach in 0-20cm and 20-40cm layers in lakeside belt in east Dongting Lake. Organic matter contents decreased in turn from 0-20cm to 20-40cm in lake marsh and reed beaches and increased in silt beaches. Values of pH in sediment were slightly alkaline in whole studied region. Negative correlation was established between organic matter content and pH value. The results will provide base data and science reference for controlling and recovery of sediment pollution in east Dongting Lake.

Mediterranean soils are particularly threatened by salinization and low levels of organic matter content. In order to assess an edaphic sustainable use, we need to study its characteristics and better understand the temporal and spatial evolution. In this study, a total of 14,852 ha located in a western Mediterranean basin were selected as the study site where 1417 and 1451 topsoil samples were analyzed in 2001/2002 and 2011/2012, respectively, for Soil Organic Matter (SOM) content, pH water (pHw) and electrical conductivity (EC). Classical statistics and geostatistics techniques were used and the individual soil samples were related with the cultural system (CS) practiced–rainfed/irrigation–and the Reference Soil Group (RSG)–Cambisols, Calcisols, Luvisols, and Fluvisols. Predictive maps were created by interpolation using the Ordinary Kriging algorithm. The main results of this study were that, when transitioning from a rainfed to irrigation CS, SOM content is maintained in Cambisols but decreases in the other RSGs, pHw is maintained and EC increases in Fluvisols, Luvisols, and Cambisols. Over time in the rainfed CS all RSGs maintained SOM and pHw but EC increased in Fluvisols, Luvisols, and Calcisols and in the irrigation CS SOM decreased in Luvisols, pHw increased in Fluvisols and Calcisols and EC increased in all RSGs.

ABSTRACT: Tembotrione is registered in Brazil for maize and is used in large areas of the country in each harvest. In recent years, producers have reported carryover effects of this herbicide in succeeding crops to maize. This fact can be attributed to tembotrione recommendations without knowing their interactions with tropical soils colloids. In this study, using high-performance liquid chromatography, it was possible to evaluate the influence of chemical and physical attributes on the sorption and desorption of tembotrione, as well as its metabolite AE 1417268, on seven soils from different regions of Brazil. The coefficients referring to sorption and desorption, as well as the hysteresis index (Kf, 1/n and H) of tembotrione and its metabolite were influenced by pH, clay content and organic matter. In soil samples with low levels of clay and organic matter, values of sorption coefficients were reduced as pH increased. The desorption of tembotrione and its metabolite in all soils were low, mainly in the clayey ones and in soils with higher organic matter content. The sorption of tembotrione and its metabolites varies with the attributes of soil, presenting a direct relation with clay and organic matter contents and an inverse one with soil pH. The desorption of tembotrione and its metabolite decreased with the increase in clay and organic matter contents in the evaluated soils.

La contaminación de los lodos que provienen de plantas de tratamiento de aguas residuales, afecta al medio ambiente y  a  la salud, por su contenido  de materia  orgánica, microorganismos y metales pesados. La presente investigación se realizó una caracterización físico-química y microbiológica en cuanto a humedad, proteínas, acidez, análisis del total de nitrógeno básico volátil (TVB-N), materia orgánica, metales pesados y parámetros microbiológicos con la finalidad de establecer la clase de lodo en base a las normativas ambientales internacionales, tales como USEPA, norma de la directiva europea y norma oficial mexicana, debido a la usencia de estas en el Ecuador. La concentración de metales se encuentra entre límite máximo de concentraciones estipulados por las tres normativas analizadas. En cuanto a los resultados de coliformes fecales se obtuvo 2,4x104 UFC/g, correspondiendo a un lodo de clase B según la USEPA; y a un lodo de clase C de acuerdo a la Norma Oficial Mexicana. En el presente se da un panorama general de los diferentes métodos de estabilización de lodos, en el cual se sugiere la utilización de cal debido a evidencias experimentales por diferentes investigaciones, siendo esta una de las más accesibles y eficientes.   Palabras claves— lodo residual, caracterización, estabilización, cal.   Abstract— Contamination of sludge from wastewater treatment plants affects the environment and health, because of their organic matter content, microorganisms and heavy metals. This research carried out a physical- chemical and microbiological characterization in terms of moisture, proteins, acidity, analysis of total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), organic matter, heavy metals and microbiological parameters with the to establish the sludge class based on international environmental regulations, such as USEPA, the standard of the European directive and the official Mexican standard, due to the use of these in Ecuador. The concentration of metals is between the maximum limit of concentrations stipulated by the three regulations analyzed. As for the results of faecal coliforms, 2.4x104  CFUs/g was obtained, corresponding to a Class B sludge according to USEPA; and a Class C sludge according to the official Mexican standard. The present gives an overview of the different methods of sludge stabilization, in which  the use of lime is suggested  due to  experimental evidence by different research, this being one of the most accessible and efficient.   Index Terms— residual sludge, characterization, stabilization, lime.

In order to understand the soil pH and main nutrient characteristics of newly added cultivated land in the eastern part of Guanzhong, and 160 soil samples were collected in 2016, the soil pH, organic matter, total nitrogen, available phosphorus and available potassium in Heyang County were studied The suitability distribution of the indicators, using stepwise regression and path analysis methods, analyzes the direct relationship between soil pH and soil nutrients, and provides a theoretical basis for improving the newly added cultivated land. The results showed that the soil pH in Heyang County varied from 8.42 to 9.67, the soil organic matter content varied from 3.46 to 17.93 g/kg, the soil total nitrogen content varied from 0.13 to 5.61 g/kg, and the soil available phosphorus changed The range is 1.73 ~ 63.06 mg/kg, and the soil available potassium range is 46.50 ~ 523.74. The newly added soil has a certain nutrient basis, but it should be further adjusted and improved during the cultivation process. The direct positive effect on soil pH value is mainly soil organic matter, and the direct negative effect is mainly soil available phosphorus. By adjusting the organic matter, total nitrogen, available phosphorus and available potassium in the soil, the pH value of the soil can be effectively improved, so that the newly cultivated soil is suitable for the growth of local crops.
