abstractThe Central Brae Oilfield is the smallest of three Upper Jurassic fields being developed in UK, Block 16/07a. The field was discovered in 1976 and commended production in September 1989 through a sub-sea template tied back to the Brae 'A' platform in the South Brae Oilfield. The field Stooip is 244 MMBBLs, and by May 1999 cumulative exports of oil and NGL reached 44 MMBBLs.The Central Brae reservoir is a proximal submarine fan sequence, comprising dominantly sand-matrix conglomerate and sanstone with a minor mudstone units. The sediments were shed eastwards off the Fladen Ground Spur and were deposited as a relatively small and steep fan at the margin of the South Viking Graben. Mudstone facies border the submarine fan deposits to the north and south, forming stratigraphic seals. The structure is a faulted anticline developed during the latest Jurassic and early Cretaceous, initially formed as a hangingwall anticline during extension but subsequently tightened during compressional phases. The western boundary of the field is formed by a sealing fault, whilst to the east, there is an oil-water contact at 13426 ft TVDss. The overlying seal is the Kimmeridge Clay Formation, which also interdigitates with the coarser facies basinwards and provides the source of the hydrocarbons.

Recoverable reserves are estimated as 65 MMBBL of oil and 6 MMBBL of NGL. The Central Brae reservoir is a proximal submarine fan sequence, comprising dominantly sand-matrix conglomerate and sandstone with minor mudstone units. The sediments were shed eastwards off the Fladen Ground Spur and were deposited as a relatively small and steep sedimentary cone at the margin of the South Viking Graben. Mudstone facies border the submarine fan deposits to the north and south, forming stratigraphic seals. The structure is a faulted anticline developed during the latest Jurassic and early Cretaceous possibly in response to large-scale rotational slump movement within the easterly-dipping graben margin sequence. The western boundary of the field is formed by a sealing fault, whilst to the east, there is an oil-water contact at 13 426 ft TVSS. The overlying seal is the Kimmeridge Clay Formation, which also interdigitates with the coarser facies basinwards, and provides the source of the hydrocarbons.

AbstractThe Flora Field straddles Blocks 31/26a and 31/26c of the UK sector of the North Sea on the southern margin of the Central Graben. The field is located on the Grensen Nose, a long-lived structural high, and was discovered by the Amerada Hess operated well 31/26a-12 in mid-1997.The Flora Field accumulation is reservoired within the Flora Sandstone, an Upper Carboniferous fluvial deposit, and a thin Upper Jurassic veneer, trapped within a tilted fault block. Oil is sourced principally from the Kimmeridge Clay Formation of the Central Graben and is sealed by overlying Lower Cretaceous marls and Upper Cretaceous Chalk Group.Reservoir quality is generally good with average net/gross of 85% and porosity of 21%, although permeability (Kh) exhibits a great deal of heterogeneity with a range of 0.1 to <10000mD (average 300 mD). The reservoir suffers both sub-horizontal (floodplain shales) and vertical (faults) compartmentalization, as well as fracturing and a tar mat at the oil-water contact modifying flow and sweep of the reservoir. Expected recoverable reserves currently stand at 13 MMBBL

abstractMagnus is the most northerly producing field in the UK sector of the North Sea. The oil accumulation occurs within sandstones of an Upper Jurassic submarine fan sequence. The combination trap style consists of reservoir truncation by unconformity at the crest of the easterly dipping fault block structure and a stratigraphic pinchout element at the northern and southern limits of the sand rich fan. The reservoir is enveloped by the likely hydrocarbon source rock, the organic rich mudstones of the Kimmeridge Clay Formation.

Exploration of the Dampier Sub-basin on the North West Shelf of Australia commenced with a reconnaissance seismic survey in 1965. In 1969 Madeleine-1, the first well drilled on the Madeleine Trend, encountered water bearing Upper Jurassic sandstones. Following acquisition of a regional grid of modern seismic in 1985 and 1986, and comprehensive hydrocarbon habitat studies, the Wanaea and Cossack prospects were matured updip from Madeleine 1. They were proposed to have improved reservoir development and an oil charge.The Wanaea Oil Field was discovered in 1989 when Wanaea-1 encountered a gross oil column of 103 m in the Upper Jurassic Angel Formation. The well flowed 49° API oil at 5856 BPD (931 kL/d) with a gas-oil ratio of 1036 SCF/STB. Two appraisal wells were drilled in the field in 1990.The Cossack Oil Field was discovered in 1990 when Cossack-1 encountered a gross oil column of 54 m also in the Angel Formation. The oil-water contact is 18 m deeper than in Wanaea-1. Cossack-1 flowed 49° API oil at 7200 BPD (1145 kL/d) with a gas-oil ratio of 98 SCF/STB.The Angel Formation reservoir consists of mass flow sandstones interbedded with bioturbated siltstones. Sandstone porosities average 16 to 17 per cent for both the Wanaea and Cossack Fields. Permeabilities average about 300 mD at Wanaea and about 500 mD at Cossack.An extensive 3-D seismic survey was conducted over the Wanaea and Cossack Fields in 1990. Final reserves calculations await interpretation of this survey, but it is clear that the combined Wanaea and Cossack oil reserve is the largest outside Bass Strait.

AbstractUpper Jurassic sandstones of the South Brae Field were deposited as a submarine fan complex. The earliest formed concretionary ferroan calcite cement passively encloses detrital feldspars which originally formed more than 10% of the rock. Later non-ferroan calcite at the concretion margins was precipitated from a more aggressive fluid. This fluid dissolved up to half of the feldspars and micas originally present, but little or no clay was precipitated. Aluminium must have been lost from the system.A late dissolution event has enhanced porosity by up to 8%. Feldspar was again reduced in volume by about half, leaving only ∼2% in the rock today. Very minor amounts of fibrous illite and kaolinite (<1%) form the last diagenetic cement. Aluminium must have again been lost from the system.As the Kimmeridge Clay Formation (KCF) encloses and interdigitates with the South Brae sandstones, a local source of organic acids is quite possible. These acid solutions may have increased the mobility of Al. The Al from the feldspars must have therefore been transported vertically into the KCF, or more probably transported laterally by compactional flows out of the basin (up to 10 km) during release of overpressured basinal water.

North and South Atlantic lateral volume exchange is a key component of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) embedded in Earth’s climate. Northward AMOC heat transport within this exchange mitigates the large heat loss to the atmosphere in the northern North Atlantic. Because of inadequate climate data, observational basin-scale studies of net interbasin exchange between the North and South Atlantic have been limited. Here ten independent climate datasets, five satellite-derived and five analyses, are synthesized to show that North and South Atlantic climatological net lateral volume exchange is partitioned into two seasonal regimes. From late-May to late-November, net lateral volume flux is from the North to the South Atlantic; whereas from late-November to late-May, net lateral volume flux is from the South to the North Atlantic. This climatological characterization offers a framework for assessing seasonal variations in these basins and provides a constraint for climate models that simulate AMOC dynamics.

An integrative taxonomic analysis based on morphology, color pattern, and the mitochondrial gene ND2 recovered four new species of Hemiphyllodactylus Bleeker that are endemic to the Shan Plateau or Salween Basin in eastern Myanmar. Hemiphyllodactylus ngwelwini sp. nov. from the Shan Plateau is part of the earlier described “eastern Myanmar clade” renamed herein as the north lineage and H. kyaiktiyoensis sp. nov. and H. pinlaungensis sp. nov. of the Shan Plateau and H. zwegabinensis sp. nov. of the Salween Basin compose an entirely new Burmese clade herein referred to as the south lineage. Although the north and south lineages come within 46 km of one another on the Shan Plateau, they are not sister lineages but sequentially separated by two lineages from Yunnan, China and another from northwestern Thailand. Hemiphyllodactylus zwegabinensis sp. nov. is the first species of this genus to be recorded from the Salween Basin and is known only from a wind-blown cloud forest on the top of the insular, karstic mountain Zwegabin in Kayin State. All other Burmese species except for H. typus, are endemic to the various localities throughout the Shan Plateau. These four new species bring the total number of Hemiphyllodactylus in Myanmar to at least 10 which is certainly an extreme underestimate of the diversity of this genus given that we discover new species at every upland locality we survey.

Abstract. A long tectonic zone composed of Upper Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous volcanic and sedimentary rocks is recognized along the Asian continent margin from the Mongol-Okhotsk fold and thrust belt on the south to the Chukotka Peninsula on the north. This belt represents the Uda-Murgal arc, which was developed along the convergent margin between Northeast Asia and Northwest Meso-Pacific. Several segments are identified in this arc based upon the volcanic and sedimentary rock assemblages, their respective compositions and basement structures. The southern and central parts of the Uda-Murgal arc were a continental margin belt with heterogeneous basement represented by metamorphic rocks of the Siberian craton, the Verkhoyansk terrigenous complex of Siberian passive margin and the Koni-Taigonos Late Paleozoic to Early Mesozoic island arc with accreted oceanic terranes. At the present day latitude of the Pekulney and Chukotka segments there was an ensimatic island arc with relicts of the South Anyui oceanic basin in a backarc basin. Accretionary prisms of the Uda-Murgal arc and accreted terranes contain fragments of Permian, Triassic to Jurassic and Jurassic to Cretaceous (Tithonian–Valanginian) oceanic crust and Jurassic ensimatic island arcs. Paleomagnetic and faunal data show significant displacement of these oceanic complexes and the terranes of the Taigonos Peninsula were originally parts of the Izanagi oceanic plate.

Abstract Results of a stratigraphic and tectonic study of the Mourotte syncline, Provence, France, divide the structure into three parts. The northern part is composed of Hauterivian littoral beds containing Danian dinosaur eggs. The Danian limestone-sandstone series disappears at La Neuve while the marly upper Danian beds continue to the extreme northern limit of the syncline. In the central part the Hauterivian wedges out, and toward its southern limit the substratum is entirely upper Jurassic. In the southern part, the Danian limestones are only visible on the northeast border. Bird eggs collected in the area assign the southern part of the syncline to the Thanetian. Overturning is less noticeable in the north, becoming acute toward the south where the syncline is tightly overturned.

In the post-colonial context, the global South has become the approved nomenclature for the non-European, non-Western parts of the world. The term promises a departure from post-colonial development geographies and from the material and discursive legacies of colonialism by ostensibly blurring the bifurcations between developed and developing, rich and poor, centre and periphery. In concept, the post-colonial literature mitigates the disparity between cities of the North and South by highlighting the achievements of elsewhere. But what happens when we try to teach this approach in the classroom? How do we locate the South without relying on concepts of otherness? And how do we communicate the importance of the South without re-creating the regional hierarchies that have dominated for far too long? This article outlines the academic arguments before turning to the opportunities and constraints associated with delivering an undergraduate module that teaches post-colonial concepts without relying on colonial constructs.
