As the rate of change in both business models and business complexity increases, enterprise architecture can be positioned to supply decision support for executives. The authors propose a dynamic enterprise architecture framework that supports business executive needs for rapid response and contextualized numerical decision support. The classic approaches to business decision making are both over simplified and insufficient to account for the dynamic complexities of reality. Recent failures of historically sound businesses demonstrate that a more robust mathematical approach is required to establish and maintain the alignment between operational decisions and enterprise objectives. We begin with an enterprise architecture (EA) framework that is robust enough to capture the elements of the business within the structure of a meta model that describes how the elements will be stored and tested for completeness and coherence. We add to that the analytical tools needed to innovate and improve the business. Finally, dynamic causal and agent layers are added to account for the qualitative and evolutionary elements that are normally missing or over simplified in most decision systems. This results in a dynamic model of an enterprise that can be simulated and analyzed to answer key business questions and provide decision support. We present a case study and demonstrate how the models are used within the decision framework to support executive decision makers.

Purpose – The purpose this paper is to profile individual-level perspectives on sustainability and supply chain partnering, introduces the concept of sustainable supply chain orientation (SSCO), and suggests pathways between executive profiles toward SSCO. Design/methodology/approach – The research relies on inductive, theory-building grounded theory and phenomenological data collection and interpretations in the wine industry. In-depth interviews were conducted over five years with 112 senior managers from 88 organizations in the global wine industry representing nine wine regions in four countries. Findings – Ten profiles were developed depicting executives’ perspectives on embracing sustainability, the extent to which motivations for various forms of sustainability and partnering compete, and being self-or supply chain partner focussed. A SSCO depicts a leader who embraces sustainability, sees alignment in motivations and is supply chain partner focussed. Research limitations/implications – The paper contributes to the sustainable supply chain management and general business orientation discourses by introducing the concept of SSCO and profiling executives’ perspectives that may help to define pathways toward SSCO. It may be limited by its inductive method and the industry context. Limitations suggest future research in discovering additional profiles and pathways as well as validating them. Practical implications – Findings reveal the importance of understanding what sustainability means to business executives of firms in hyper-competitive markets with global supply chains. Managers will recognize that there are many possible routes toward SSCO, each one revealing potentially unique differentiation opportunities while also providing clues to competitors’ strategies. Originality/value – This work introduces the concept of SSCO and contributes a classification scheme consisting of detailed business executive profile descriptions and specific pathways toward SSCO followed by those executives.

Using two Gallup polls, which together contained three questions on the attitudes of adult Americans towards population growth and control, a multivariate analysis was conducted of the relationship to each question of nine demographic factors: age, city size, education, family income, occupation of the household head, race, region, religion and sex. Only education and religion showed an intrinsic relationship with attitudes. Specifically, the extent of endorsement of the view that the world population growth rate is a serious problem, and of the view that population limitation will, at some time, be necessary, increased with education. Among those whose family income was at least $10,000 and those whose house-hold head was a professional or business executive, Protestants were more likely than Catholics to view US and world population growth rates as serious and to consider population limitation necessary.

The article is devoted to the study of the features of modern political communication in the context of society networkization. The interaction of a regional political leader and society in the sign-symbolic space of political communication is considered. The purpose of this paper is to identify the main image-role semantic constructs, which are reflected in the messages of the head of the constituent entity of the Russian Federation, posted by him on the popular Internet platform for social media Instagram. In addition to establishing the most actively used semantic image-role constructs, the research determines the degree of it`s popularity and the level of it`s approval among the audience of this Internet platform. The qualitative and quantitative type of content analysis was chosen as the main applied research method. In addition to it, a comparative analysis method is used. The conceptual basis of the research is formed by the theory of the information society, as well as the concepts of “network image”, “digitalization policy” and “network identity”.According to the results of the conducted content analysis, it was found that more often than others in the messages posted on the studied official Internet page of the political leader in Instagram, such an image-role construct as an “organizer” is presented. This corresponds to the type of leadership characteristic of this political leader. Among the entries that aroused a relatively increased attention of the audience of the Internet platform, there are messages where a number of image-role constructs are presented, including: “crisis manager”, “organizer”, “team player”, “builder”, “open leader, hearing society” and “business executive”. Such a uniform distribution of the audience’s interest in it`s functional and semantic constructs may be explained by the fact that the head of the region is actively paying attention to each of the designated thematic areas. The highest level of approval from the audience of the Internet platform was received by the messages, which reflected such image-role constructs as “family man” and “leader looking to the future”. Considering the relatively inactive use of the designated semantic constructs by the head of the region in the messages posted on his official Instagram page, it is noted that an increase in the number of messages, which would reflect these image-role constructs, may enhance the leader’s positive image and, as a result, the level of his support in society.

A viable business model in the digital economy must follow the fundamental economic principles and be able to capitalize on the disruptive characteristics of the Internet commerce. This chapter presents an analytical method to assist business executive and entrepreneurs in evaluating and building a viable business model in the digital economy. This method is based on the concept of disruptive innovation, economies of scale and scope, and the theories of switching costs and transaction cost economics. It takes into account various cost models from both demand- and supply-side perspectives. The chapter contrasts the business transformation process and value creation strategies in the physical and digital economies, and discusses several e-commerce revenue models and pricing issues in the digital economy.

Following the return of the Liberal National Country Party for its second term of office under the Prime Minister, Mr John Howard, the Federal Government established a committee headed by a business executive Mr John Ralph. This Committee produced an extensive report recommending substantial changes to the Australian tax legislation. Following consideration of the report by the Federal Government, substantial amendments were proposed in September and November 1999. Many of these proposals have now been legislated and several remain in the pipeline awaiting Parliament scrutiny. This paper covers the practical aspects of the changes to the tax legislation, along with examination of particular issues associated with new developments in matters such as gas banking. Particular focus has been made on the new Uniform Capital Allowances Provisions and the deductions which will be available to the industry against upstream project development expenditures.
