Fuzzy logic (Chapter I) allows us to bring the operation of information systems closer to the working methods of humans. People frequently deal with fuzzy concepts (for example, terms such as “almost all,” “the majority,” “approximately 8,” “high,” or “low”), which include a certain vagueness or uncertainty and which traditional information systems do not understand and therefore cannot use.

This chapter presents an introduction to fuzzy logic and to fuzzy databases. With regard to the first topic, we have introduced the main concepts in this field to facilitate the understanding of the rest of the chapters to novel readers in fuzzy subjects. With respect to the fuzzy databases, this chapter gives a list of six research topics in this fuzzy area. All these topics are briefly commented on, and we include references to books, papers, and even to other chapters of this handbook, where we can find some interesting reviews about different subjects and new approaches with different goals. Finally, we give a historic summary of some fuzzy models, and we conclude with some future trends in this scientific area.

This chapter focuses on the multi-objective methodology to establish an evaluation model for returned components and products. The chapter starts with an introduction about the issue of remanufacturability and the importance of the product information technology. Then, the related studies dealing with similar problems in the literature are discussed in the background section. Next, the focal problem of this chapter is stated in the problem statement section. A detailed description about the approaches (i.e., fuzzy logic and Bayesian approaches) can be found in the proposed methodology section. Right after this, an illustrative example is explained in the experimental study section. The potential research directions regarding the main problem considered in this chapter are highlighted in the future trends section. Finally, the conclusion drawn in the last section closes this chapter.

Today, the world has heard a lot about artificial intelligence (AI) and its influence in accomplishing responsibilities, and it has become famous through films, series TV and social networking sites. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a combination of algorithms and techniques developed by developers and programmers to build metal bodies that can work for centuries with individuals. Despite the interest of everyone in this topic and its spread significantly, most people do not have adequate knowledge and understanding of this science. This science is considered as one of the essential topics in computer sciences and engineering. In this article, it has been decided to write an overview on the topic of artificial intelligence and understand how its ideas started and spread universally. In addition, there is a review of Expert Systems, Artificial Neural Networks, Fuzzy Logic, and AI applications in the medical field and power systems, especially in investigating lung images of people with COVID-19. The idea presented in this article is that the future will soon come when humans and machines will merge into cyborgs or cybernetic creatures, and they will work together when completing tasks. This idea is described as transhumanism.

During the last decades, the art and science of fuzzy logic have witnessed significant developments and have found applications in many active areas, such as pattern recognition, classification, control systems, etc. A lot of research has demonstrated the ability of fuzzy logic in dealing with vague and uncertain linguistic information. For the purpose of representing human perception, fuzzy logic has been employed as an effective tool in intelligent decision making. Due to the emergence of various studies on fuzzy logic-based decision-making methods, it is necessary to make a comprehensive overview of published papers in this field and their applications. This paper covers a wide range of both theoretical and practical applications of fuzzy logic in decision making. It has been grouped into five parts: to explain the role of fuzzy logic in decision making, we first present some basic ideas underlying different types of fuzzy logic and the structure of the fuzzy logic system. Then, we make a review of evaluation methods, prediction methods, decision support algorithms, group decision-making methods based on fuzzy logic. Applications of these methods are further reviewed. Finally, some challenges and future trends are given from different perspectives. This paper illustrates that the combination of fuzzy logic and decision making method has an extensive research prospect. It can help researchers to identify the frontiers of fuzzy logic in the field of decision making.

This chapter discusses the scheduling of the reusable components’ reprocessing operations after the used products are disassembled and classified. The chapter starts with an introduction about the issue of scheduling disassembly operations and the scheduling in remanufacturing cells encountered at the used products post-disassembly stage. Then, related studies dealing with similar problems are discussed in the background section. Next, the focal problem of this chapter is stated in the problem statement section. A detailed description about the approaches (i.e., the fuzzy logic and the fuzzy MAX-MIN ant systems) can be found in the proposed methodology section. Right after this, an illustrative example is explained in the experimental study section. The potential research directions regarding the main problem considered in this chapter are highlighted in the future trends section. Finally, the conclusion drawn in the last section closes this chapter.
