Colombia is the world’s largest producer of fique fibers (Furcraea bedinghausii), with a net production of 30,000 tons per year. This work proposes to revalue waste from the Colombian fique agroindustry. For this purpose, cellulose nanofibers were obtained from fique and used as reinforcement material to create acrylic superabsorbent hydrogels. Unreinforced acrylic hydrogels (AHR0) and acrylic hydrogels reinforced with fique nanofibers at 3% w/w (AHR3), 5% w/w (AHR5), and 10 % w/w (AHR10) were synthesized using the solution polymerization method. The best hydrogel formulation for agricultural purposes was chosen by comparing their swelling behavior, mechanical properties, and using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). By raising the nanofiber concentration to 3% (AHR3), the best-chosen formulation, the interaction between the nanofibers and the polymer matrix increased, which favored the network stability. However, beyond AHR3, there was a higher viscosity of the reactive system, which caused a reduction in the mobility of the polymer chains, thus disfavoring the swelling capacity. The reinforced hydrogel proposed in this study (AHR3) could represent a contribution to overcoming the problems of land dryness present in Colombia, an issue that will worsen in the coming years due to the climate emergency.

By means of aqueous solution polymerization method, the composites of polyacrylic acid (PAA)/Bacterial cellulose (BC)/Na-MMT and PAA/Na-MMT were prepared respectively. The effects of Na-MMT content on the properties of PAA/Na-MMT and BC content on the properties of PAA/BC/Na-MMT composites were investigated. The results show that with appropriate increasing Na-MMT, the composites has good salt-resistant ability and thermal stability, mean while, the water-absorbing capacity of PAA/Na-MMT composites is significantly increased. Comparing with that of the PAA/Na-MMT hydrogel, with addition of BC content, the water-absorbing capacity and thermal stability of PAA/BC/Na-MMT are enhanced in a certain degree. The SEM analysis indicate that there are more network structure in the composites hydrogel. XRD result shows that the layered structure of Na-MMT is stripped and the prepared composites achieves peel compound.

In this research, we synthesized novel polyetheretherketone (PEEK) copolymers and evaluated the biosafety and cytotoxicity of their composites for spinal cage applications in the orthopedic field. The PEEK copolymers and their composites were prepared through a solution polymerization method using diphenyl sulfone as a polymerization solvent. The composite of PEEK copolymer showed good mechanical properties similar to that of natural bone, and also showed good thermal characteristics for the processing of clinical use as spine cage. The results of an in vitro cytotoxicity test did not show any evidence of a toxic effect on the novel PEEK composite. On the basis of these cytotoxicity test results, the PEEK composite also proved its in vitro biosafety for application to an implantable spine cage.

The sodium salt of Poly(acrylic acid-maleic anhydride) was prepared by solution polymerization method and applied to 75% thifensulfuron WDG. The results show that granule suspension rate all achieves 85% above, disintegrating time is less than 60 seconds, thermal decomposition rate is less than 3%.That meet WDG various technical indicators.

This paper made the high absorbent resins poly 2-acrylamide-2-methyl propane sulfonic acid (PAMPS) by solution polymerization method, researched its adsorption properties to heavy metals Cu2+ and Zn2+ from landfill leachate, and studied the adsorbent dosage, pH and the adsorption times effect on adsorption effect. The results indicated: when the adsorbent dosage was 25 g/L, pH was 6.5 and adsorption time was 45 minitues, the removal rates of Cu2+ by PAMPS reached 89.5%. When the adsorbent dosage was 35 g/L, pH was 6.5 and adsorption time was 55 minitues, the removal rates of Zn2+ by PAMPS reached 96.8%.
