The permeability of the rabbit placenta at term has been studied by following maternal and fetal blood sugar curves during a controlled intravenous infusion of the following sugars: disaccharides (sucrose, lactose, maltose); hexoses (glucose, mannose, galactose, sorbose, fructose); pentoses (arabinose, xylose, ketoxylose) and the trisaccharides dihydroxyacetone and glyceraldehyde. The disaccharides were almost completely blocked by the placenta. Among the hexoses, and possibly among the pentoses, there was a clear differential permeability on the part of the placenta to the aldo-sugars on the one hand and the keto-sugars on the other. Results with the trisaccharides were inconclusive. The results were held to furnish added proof for the complex character of the placental transfer mechanism for sugars. No evidence was put forward for the possible mechanism involved.

SUMMARYTwo DZ monoplacental twins are reported, one affected by mongolism and the other normal. Chromosome examination in the former indicated trisomy 21, while the latter presented a mosaicism consisting, at the age of 13 days, in 70% normal and 30% 21-trisomic cells; at the age of 5 months, in 95% normal and 5% trisomic cells; while, at the age of one year, all the cells appeared to be normal. The possibility of mosaicism, and, according to clinical and hematological findings, that of feto-fetal blood transfusion are excluded. The hypothesis is suggested of a progressive loss of the reproductive capacity of « chimaera » of abnormal lymphocytes.

In a tribute to F. G. Gregory written at the time of his retirement it was said ‘His contemporaries (at school) remember him variously as brilliant, versatile, talkative, untidy or not interested in games—but they remember him’. About the same time one of his former students wrote—in a letter of congratulation on the award of the Royal Medal—‘what matters is the company of your juniors who were influenced by you when they were students, it includes all sorts of people you met only once or twice’. The name of Gregory at once recalls in the minds of those who met him, that vivid personality whose eager and penetrating curiosity about every aspect of human knowledge made intellectual adventure appear the most exciting of pastimes. The bubbling flow of thoughts which was engendered by the mention of any topic, scientific or otherwise, could not be restrained and conversation tended to give way to a monologue which ranged from expression of highly informed opinion to the wildest of speculations. The listener might be interested, stimulated, surprised at being instructed in his own expertise, irritated or even annoyed by the exhortation he had provoked, but could never be indifferent. Everything that Gregory undertook he entered into with passionate fervour, and his extremes of behaviour elicited extreme responses from others. He inspired loyalty, affection and tolerance in some and in others antipathy, impatience, and resentment. His complex character was capable of forthright speaking amounting almost to rudeness, on the one hand, and on the other of courtesy, charm, and sincere sympathy for the difficulties of others. He was by nature a rebel who really enjoyed an argument, the more heated the better, and was quite gleeful over victory. ‘As I anticipated there was a rather vehement discussion—and I may have expressed my point of view too forcibly for a meeting of the Linnean Society.’

In this study, the effectiveness of vasoprotective Diosmin for the prevention of pre-eclampsia in pregnant women of high-risk group with severe forms of placental insufficiency was evaluated. The choice of prophylactic agent in the clinical group is justified by close pathogenetic relationship between placental insufficiency and pre-eclampsia on the one hand, and proved fetoprotective action of Diosmin in case of placental insufficiency on the other hand. It is shown that a normalizing effect on the uterine-placental- fetal blood flow, the functional state of the endothelium of blood vessels, the production of growth factors, the induction of apoptosis of immunocompetent cells by trophoblasts, metabolism and angiogenesis in the placenta, contributes to clinically significant reduction in the frequency of implementation of fetoplacental complex pathology and pre-eclampsia.

The reconstructions, analyses and discussions concerning various broadly understood instrumentalized objects available in the subject literature allow one to distinguish and identify at least two interrelated forms of instrumentalization – a weak and a strong form. The former consists of using a particular object for fulfilling an aim in its unspecific functions. Thus, it can be treated as opposite to the phenomenon of functional fixation. The essence of the latter is a change in the position of the instrumentalized object, both in the ontological and axiological order – one which is a degrading change. It is this form of instrumentalization which allows the possibility of its reinterpretation in the categories of a sin of untruth. Such reinterpretation makes use of the multitude of forms of truth and their interrelationships, as well as of the distinction between a “great and small truth.” Thus, the heuristic value of the rhetoric of sin used here enables one to emphasise some important factual aspects. Firstly, referring to many possible dimensions in which instrumentalization can be subjected to evaluation, sin will be treated here metaphorically (due to taking into account all dimensions together) and literally (in order to highlight in consequence its moral, conscious and intended character). Secondly, this rhetoric can reflect the complex structure of instrumentalization, expressed in the categories of a sin committed “in thought, word, deed and omission,” of a light or heavy nature, with violation carried out on the nature of the instrumentalized object as its extreme form. Thirdly, rhetoric allows one to understand the perpetrator of instrumentalization’s activation of disguising, justifying or even absolving his activities. Fourthly, this results in seeking out the psychological mechanism of “being led into temptation.” Its complex character can be clearly seen in many cases, especially in the case of political instrumentalization of religion, where, on the one hand, the profanation of religion takes place, while on the other, the legitimisation, ennoblement or even sacralisation of politics occurs.

The first question to be answered, in seeking coordinate systems for geodynamics, is: what is geodynamics? The answer is, of course, that geodynamics is that part of geophysics which is concerned with movements of the Earth, as opposed to geostatics which is the physics of the stationary Earth. But as far as we know, there is no stationary Earth – epur sic monere. So geodynamics is actually coextensive with geophysics, and coordinate systems suitable for the one should be suitable for the other. At the present time, there are not many coordinate systems, if any, that can be identified with a static Earth. Certainly the only coordinate of aeronomic (atmospheric) interest is the height, and this is usually either as geodynamic height or as pressure. In oceanology, the most important coordinate is depth, and this, like heights in the atmosphere, is expressed as metric depth from mean sea level, as geodynamic depth, or as pressure. Only for the earth do we find “static” systems in use, ana even here there is real question as to whether the systems are dynamic or static. So it would seem that our answer to the question, of what kind, of coordinate systems are we seeking, must be that we are looking for the same systems as are used in geophysics, and these systems are dynamic in nature already – that is, their definition involvestime.

Abstract. Two experiments examined the influence of stories on recipients’ self-perceptions. Extending prior theory and research, our focus was on assimilation effects (i.e., changes in self-perception in line with a protagonist’s traits) as well as on contrast effects (i.e., changes in self-perception in contrast to a protagonist’s traits). In Experiment 1 ( N = 113), implicit and explicit conscientiousness were assessed after participants read a story about either a diligent or a negligent student. Moderation analyses showed that highly transported participants and participants with lower counterarguing scores assimilate the depicted traits of a story protagonist, as indicated by explicit, self-reported conscientiousness ratings. Participants, who were more critical toward a story (i.e., higher counterarguing) and with a lower degree of transportation, showed contrast effects. In Experiment 2 ( N = 103), we manipulated transportation and counterarguing, but we could not identify an effect on participants’ self-ascribed level of conscientiousness. A mini meta-analysis across both experiments revealed significant positive overall associations between transportation and counterarguing on the one hand and story-consistent self-reported conscientiousness on the other hand.

SummaryThe prognosis of patients with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) has improved considerably by introduction of aggressive consolidation chemotherapy and haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (SCT). Nevertheless, only 20-30% of patients with AML achieve long-term diseasefree survival after SCT. The most common cause of treatment failure is relapse. Additionally, mortality rates are significantly increased by therapy-related causes such as toxicity of chemotherapy and complications of SCT. Including radioimmunotherapies in the treatment of AML and myelodyplastic syndrome (MDS) allows for the achievement of a pronounced antileukaemic effect for the reduction of relapse rates on the one hand. On the other hand, no increase of acute toxicity and later complications should be induced. These effects are important for the primary reduction of tumour cells as well as for the myeloablative conditioning before SCT.This paper provides a systematic and critical review of the currently used radionuclides and immunoconjugates for the treatment of AML and MDS and summarizes the literature on primary tumour cell reductive radioimmunotherapies on the one hand and conditioning radioimmunotherapies before SCT on the other hand.

In recent years, political and social conditions have changed dramatically. Many analyses help to capture these dynamics. However, they produce political pessimism: on the one hand there is the image of regression and on the other, a direct link is made between socio-economic decline and the rise of the far-right. To counter these aspects, this article argues that current political events are to be understood less as ‘regression’ but rather as a moment of movement and the return of deep political struggles. Referring to Jacques Ranciere’s political thought, the current conditions can be captured as the ‘end of post-democracy’. This approach changes the perspective on current social dynamics in a productive way. It allows for an emphasis on movement and the recognition of the windows of opportunity for emancipatory struggles.

Political ideological pluralism, religious diversity are characteristic features of modern Ukrainian society. On the one hand, multiculturalism, socio-political, religious differentiation of the latter appear as important characteristics of its democracy, as a practical expression of freedom, on the other - as a factor that led to the deconsocialization of society, gave rise to "nodal points" of tension, confrontational processes, in particular, in political and religious spheres.

Two aspects of Schumpeter' legacy are analyzed in the article. On the one hand, he can be viewed as the custodian of the neoclassical harvest supplementing to its stock of inherited knowledge. On the other hand, the innovative character of his works is emphasized that allows to consider him a proponent of hetherodoxy. It is stressed that Schumpeter's revolutionary challenge can lead to radical changes in modern economics.
