Archaeology of disaster in Indonesia: where are we now?

Natural disasters are a phenomenon that shaped the Indonesian Archipelago. Earthquakes and volcanic activities have become periodic experiences in the lives of people in this region. The geographical characteristics of Indonesia which are located at the confluence of active plates and part of the global volcanic chain are natural factors that make these islands vulnerable to disasters. Cultural historical studies have recorded various phenomena of past natural disasters in the archipelago. Some have had minimal impact, but others have resulted in the loss of civilization. Although the issue has become the important part of the civilization and profile of Indonesia, the archaeological study of disasters has not well developed. The existing studies so far are still very partial with the fragmentary results. Characterized with this complex character, the study of archaeological disaster requires a multidisciplinary approach. This paper attempts to discuss the archaeology of disasters in Indonesia including the background, current conditions and the prospects of future development. Particularly in discussing the role of local wisdoms in dealing with disasters as part of the civilization of the archipelago.

A Beginning to Existing: Understanding Colin Wilson’s “Outsiderism” in ‘Ritual In The Dark’ - An Eastern Perspective

The phenomenon of “Outsiderism” found in the works of Colin Wilson has both individual and social implications which are intrinsically evolutionary. Wilson takes a stock of this ‘evolutionary man’ and concludes that ‘outsider is a god in making. The ‘Outsider’ is a state of consciousness which recognizes both duality and non-duality, but strives to leave the former and hold the later. Like an Eastern Yogi, these ‘outsiders’ have a strong recognition that life in its ‘ordinariness’ generates ennui which is bereft of any meaning and purpose. They indulge in all such actions, though momentarily, with intent of bringing intensity to their consciousness. Wilson contends that human energy can manifest in all possible negative and positive forms, but in the outsider state, these energies begin to integrate which leads to the realization that mankind’s freedom lies in religious attitude wherein a human being reconnects with its inner sources. It is interesting to understand the complex character of the “outsider” that Wilson has created in both his fiction and non-fiction and hold him as an alter ego to the eastern sannyasin, who having some glimpses of the other modes of being and torn by his own inner and outer conflicts is desperate to cast off the slough of his trivial worldly existence and metamorphose into a god. This paper is an attempt to understand the Wilsonian outsider with specific reference to the novel ‘Ritual in the Dark.’ The study will be carried out from the perspective of Eastern mysticism so as to find out, whether such outsiders are Western sannyasins engaged in a similar self-quest, and who having traversed through myriad realms of their physical and psychological beings are beginning to exist.

Load capacity of the board grillage with two stringers under ice loading

Снизить повреждаемость бортовых перекрытий при ледовых нагрузках можно за счет совершенствования расчетных зависимостей по оценке их несущей способности. Далеко не всегда такие зависимости, приводимые в справочных изданиях, дают верные рекомендации из-за не вполне ясного характера распределения нагрузок в сложных статически неопределимых системах. В справочнике по СМК приводится расчетная зависимость, позволяющая определить несущую способность регулярного перекрытия с двумя стрингерами при действиии локально распределенной нагрузки в пределах прямоугольника. Цель данной работы заключалась в оценке несущей способности реального бортового перекрытия ледокола типа Wind с помощью МКЭ при параметрах ледовой нагрузки, определяемой рекомендациями Морского Регистра РФ, и последующем сравнении полученных результатов с расчетами по теоретической зависимости, приведенной в справочнике. Полученные данные показали, что зависимость в справочнике для оценки несущей способности перекрытия дает удовлетворительно согласующиеся с МКЭ результаты после соответствующего уменьшения числового коэффициента в ней. При анализе несущей способности перекрытия варьировались шпация, толщина обшивки, высота стенок стрингеров и площадь приложения нагрузки. Установлено, что текучесть наблюдается в опорных сечениях шпангоутов и посредине их пролета, а из-за большой ширины присоединенного пояска обшивка у контура перекрытия практически никогда не течет. Полученные МКЭ результаты показали наличие обратно пропорциональной зависимости между предельной нагрузкой и шпацией при фиксированной площади нагружения. Отмечено, что увеличение толщины обшивки несущественно влияет на величину предельной нагрузки при остальных неизменных параметрах перекрытия. Выполненные расчеты позволяют кроме предельной нагрузки оценить также и величины прогибов при упругопластическом деформировании перекрытий, которые затруднительно подсчитать аналитически. To low damage of the board grillages under ice loading is possible by improving analytical relations on estimation of their load capacity. Not always such relations, bringing in manuals, give true recommendations because of complex character of the loads distribution in static indeterminate systems. Im manual on ship structural mechanics is giving analytical relation for determination of load capacity of regular grillage with two stringers under action of localy distributed load in rectangular area. Purpose of this study is to estimate load capacity of real board grillage of icebreaker of type Wind with help of FEM under parameters of ice load recommended in Maritime Register of RF, and following comparison of obtained results with calculation on analytical relation, given in manual. Obtained results show that relation in manual for estimation of load capacity of grillage give satisfactory results corresponding to FEM only after corresponding reducing of numerical coefficient in it. Under analysis of load capacity of grillage, it was changing frame space, thickness of plating, depth of stringers and area of application of load. It was estimated that most loaded zones of frames are their sections near supports and in the mid-span. Because of big width of associated plate the plating near contour of grillage is never yielding practically. Results obtained by FEM show existence of inversely proportional relation between the limit load and space framing under fixed area of loading. It was noticed that increasing of the plating thickness influent not essentially on value of the limit load under all other parameters of grillage unchangeable. Performed calculations allow to estimate limit load and value of deflections under elasto-plastic deformation of grillage, which is difficult to calculate analytically,

Structure of second-grade diminutives in Czech and Slovak. A corpus-based synchronic-diachronic analysis

In Slavic languages, diminutivization is a highly productive morphological process. A diminutive marker can be attached to nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs. Secondary or even multiple diminutives are also possible. Considering the combinability of diminutive suffixes in nouns, Manova and Winternitz (2011) claim that only productive DIM1 suffixes function as DIM2 suffixes. The aim of this paper is to verify this idea on the basis of the analysis of data from Czech and Slovak. The DIM2 for the analysis were excerpted from the corpora. Neither Czech nor Slovak current sources apprehend diminutive markers as combinations of primary and secondary diminutive suffixes. The complex character of secondary diminutivizers is understood as a diachronic issue. Therefore, a historical analysis of all secondary diminutives was necessary. The research proved the assumption about the combinability of diminutive markers. The analysis also revealed that unproductive DIM2 suffixes are attached by substitution in both languages.

Integrated Study of the Thiocyanate Anion Electrooxidation by Electroanalytical and Computational Methods

The mechanism of the electrochemical oxidation of thiocyanate anion in acetonitrile was studied by cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, electrolysis, digital simulations and quantum chemical calculations. The experimental data indicated the complex character of the reaction mechanism, which includes reactions of thiocyanate anion with the products of its oxidation, thiocyanate radical and thiocyanogen. It was proposed that the last reaction takes place in the reduction of thiocyanogen as well. The DFT PCM-SMD M06–2X/aug-cc-pVQZ calculations show that the reaction of thiocyanate anion with thiocyanate radical • and disproportionation of thiocyanogen anion radical are thermodynamically favorable. The effects of the mentioned reactions on the shape of the curves of cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry as well as that of the mass transfer regime are discussed.

Experimental study of the influence of laser radiation power on the reflection coefficient of germanium and silicon at a wavelength of 355 nm

The dependences of the reflection coefficients at a wavelength of λ = 355 nm for germanium and silicon single crystals on the energy density of impacting laser radiation in the range 0.01 - 0.1 J/cm2 have been measured. Analytical expressions were obtained. It is assumed, that they are also valid in the range 0.1 - 1.0 J/cm2. With a further increase in the energy density, the dependence should acquire a more complex character due to the resulting optical breakdown.

Instrumentalization as a Sin of Untruth

The reconstructions, analyses and discussions concerning various broadly understood instrumentalized objects available in the subject literature allow one to distinguish and identify at least two interrelated forms of instrumentalization – a weak and a strong form. The former consists of using a particular object for fulfilling an aim in its unspecific functions. Thus, it can be treated as opposite to the phenomenon of functional fixation. The essence of the latter is a change in the position of the instrumentalized object, both in the ontological and axiological order – one which is a degrading change. It is this form of instrumentalization which allows the possibility of its reinterpretation in the categories of a sin of untruth. Such reinterpretation makes use of the multitude of forms of truth and their interrelationships, as well as of the distinction between a “great and small truth.” Thus, the heuristic value of the rhetoric of sin used here enables one to emphasise some important factual aspects. Firstly, referring to many possible dimensions in which instrumentalization can be subjected to evaluation, sin will be treated here metaphorically (due to taking into account all dimensions together) and literally (in order to highlight in consequence its moral, conscious and intended character). Secondly, this rhetoric can reflect the complex structure of instrumentalization, expressed in the categories of a sin committed “in thought, word, deed and omission,” of a light or heavy nature, with violation carried out on the nature of the instrumentalized object as its extreme form. Thirdly, rhetoric allows one to understand the perpetrator of instrumentalization’s activation of disguising, justifying or even absolving his activities. Fourthly, this results in seeking out the psychological mechanism of “being led into temptation.” Its complex character can be clearly seen in many cases, especially in the case of political instrumentalization of religion, where, on the one hand, the profanation of religion takes place, while on the other, the legitimisation, ennoblement or even sacralisation of politics occurs.

Social support for the family that brings up the disabled child is the tool of social policy of Ukraine

In the article it has been considered that social support for the family that brings up the disabled child is the tool of social policy of Ukraine. The attention has been focused on the standard and legal base that creates social and economic, legal, medical, psychological and pedagogical conditions for the solution of social problems of the designated category of families. The conclusion is that one of the conditions of the improvement of the situation of the families that bring up the disabled child is the realization of social support of such category of the families as the priority instrument of social policy of Ukraine that is directed to the solution of a wide range of actions of complex character (medical, legal, economic, psychological and pedagogical).

Insults – between dysphemisms and markers of emotional closeness

The present investigative approach proposes an analysis of insults from a socio-, psycho- and pragmalinguistic perspective, aiming to reveal the complex character of this type of communication. Given that insults, as reactive acts of speech, are dependent on both the intentions of the speaker and the way the receiver decodes the statement, we suggested a classification based on the illocutionary point (motivated insults—with negative or positive illocutionary point—and unmotivated insults) and on the propositional content (direct insults—within this category, we analyzed the lexical innovations generated by the Covid-19 pandemic, especially the dysphemic use of the participle (substantivized) adjective covidat—and indirect insults). Although the oral communication provides the necessary data for the manifestation of insults, in addition to the sequences selected from TV shows, we chose messages written on various social networking sites and excerpts from online forums. Under the protection of anonymity, users are uninhibited and they violate socially imposed linguistic norms without fear of being held accountable for their actions.

“Breaking Good”: Mentoring for Teacher Induction at the Workplace

Given the dissonant and complex character of induction for novices at the workplace, I propose a conception of mentoring that focuses on mitigating misalignments between novices’ developmental stage and the socializing characteristics and pressures of workplace induction. Drawing on extant research and conceptualization, including my own research on mentoring for teacher induction, this article addresses three interrelated questions: What are the central tasks of mentors in promoting effective induction of novice teachers at the workplace? What do mentors need to know in order to perform these tasks? What kind of professional frameworks for learning to mentor? I claim that in order to help novices ‘break good from experience’, as the title metaphorically suggests, mentors need to be prepared to flexibly adapt strategies from diverse mentoring models according to the particular socio-cultural features of induction of novices’ workplace and to aspects of subject matter teaching. Such kind of mentoring is, thus, attentive to discursive tensions between ideologies, rituals, values, belief systems and behaviors that surge amongst the various players involved. The article describes the central tasks for mentors of novice teachers, the knowledge-base required of mentors in order to perform these tasks and the kind of professional frameworks for learning to mentor.
