This work presents the preparation and characterization of compression-moulded montmorillonite and carbon nanofibre-polypropylene foams. The influence of these nanofillers on the foaming behaviour was analyzed in terms of the foaming parameters and final cellular structure and morphology of the foams. Both nanofillers induced the formation of a more isometric-like cellular structure in the foams, mainly observed for the MMT-filled nanocomposite foams. Alongside their crystalline characteristics, the nanocomposite foams were also characterized and compared with the unfilled ones regarding their dynamic-mechanical thermal behaviour. The nanocomposite foams showed higher specific storage moduli due to the reinforcement effect of the nanofillers and higher cell density isometric cellular structure. Particularly, the carbon nanofibre foams showed an increasingly higher electrical conductivity with increasing the amount of nanofibres, thus showing promising results as to produce electrically improved lightweight materials for applications such as electrostatic painting.

Polysulfone nanocomposite foams containing variable amounts of graphene nanoplatelets (0–10 wt%) were prepared by water vapor-induced phase separation (WVIPS) and supercritical CO2 (scCO2) dissolution. WVIPS foams with two ranges of relative densities were considered, namely, between 0.23 and 0.41 and between 0.34 and 0.46. Foams prepared by scCO2 dissolution (0.0–2.0 wt% GnP) were obtained with a relative density range between 0.35 and 0.45. Although the addition of GnP affected the cellular structure of all foams, they had a bigger influence in WVIPS foams. The storage modulus increased for all foams with increasing relative density and GnP’s concentration, except for WVIPS PSU-GnP foams, as they developed open/interconnected cellular structures during foaming. Comparatively, foams prepared by scCO2 dissolution showed higher specific storage moduli than similar WVIPS foams (same relative density and GnP content), explained by the microcellular structure of scCO2 foams. As a result of the plasticizing effect of CO2, PSU foams prepared by scCO2 showed lower glass transition temperatures than WVIPS foams, with the two series of these foams displaying decreasing values with incrementing the amount of GnP.

Ultrafiltration cellulose acetate membrane can be transformed by annealing into reverse osmosis membranes (RO type). Annealing brings about changes in structural properties of the membranes, accompanied by changes in their permeability behaviour and electrical properties. Correlations between structure parameters and electrochemical properties are shown for the temperature range 20-90 °C. Relations have been derived which explain the role played by the dc electrical conductivity in the characterization of rejection ability of the membranes in the reverse osmosis, i.e. rRO = (1 + exp (A-B))-1, where exp A and exp B are statistically significant correlation functions of electrical conductivity and salt permeation, or of electrical conductivity and water flux through the membrane, respectively.

Bi2VO5.5 (Bi4O11), which is the vanadium analog of the first member of the Aurivillius family of oxides of the general formula Bi2An−1BnO3n+3, has been prepared and characterized. The vanadate has the expected layered structure and is ferroelectric with a Curie temperature of 720 K. While we have not been able to synthesize the vanadium analog of the n = 2 member of the Aurivillius family, we have examined the structure and properties of a vanadate of the composition Bi2V3O9.

Spinel-perovskite multiferroics of NiFe2O4/BiFeO3 nanoparticles were prepared by modified Pechini method. The structure and morphology of the composites were examined by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the composites consisted of spinel NiFe2O4 and perovskite BiFeO3 after annealed at 700°C for 2h, and the particle size ranges from 40 to 100nm. VSM and ME results indicated that the nanocomposites exhibited both tuning magnetic properties and a ME effect. The ME effect of the nanocomposites strongly depended on the magnetic bias and magnetic field frequency.

Two new imidazole ionic liquid salts, 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([AMIM]Cl) and 1-allyl-3-methy-imidazolium hydrogen sulfate ([EMIM]HSO4), were synthesized with direct synthesis and two-step synthesis method, using a viscosity meter, PH meter, conductivity meter, densitometer, infrared spectrometer determined its chemical structure and properties. The results show that two ionic liquids in the range is slightly different, the trend is roughly same. As the temperature increases, the viscosity decreases, PH gradually increased, the density decreases slightly, can be regarded as constant, the conductivity gradually increased. Ionic liquids of the two IR spectra analysis show its structure and synthetic route consistent with the structure of matter.
