Nanocrystalline and bulk samples of “Fe”-doped CuO were prepared by coprecipitation and ceramic methods. Structural and compositional analyses were performed using X-ray diffraction, SEM, and EDAX. Traces of secondary phases such as CuFe2O4, Fe3O4, andα-Fe2O3having peaks very close to that of the host CuO were identified from the Rietveld profile analysis and the SAED pattern of bulk and nanocrystalline Cu0.98Fe0.02O samples. Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM) measurements show hysteresis at 300 K for all the samples. The ferrimagnetic Neel transition temperature () was found to be around 465°C irrespective of the content of “Fe”, which is close to the value of cubic CuFe2O4. High-pressure X-Ray diffraction studies were performed on 2% “Fe”-doped bulk CuO using synchrotron radiation. From the absence of any strong new peaks at high pressure, it is evident that the secondary phases if present could be less than the level of detection. Cu2O, which is diamagnetic by nature, was also doped with 1% of “Fe” and was found to show paramagnetic behavior in contrast to the “Fe” doped CuO. Hence the possibility of intrinsic magnetization of “Fe”-doped CuO apart from the secondary phases is discussed based on the magnetization and charge state of “Fe” and the host into which it is substituted.

The structural and magnetic properties of arc-melted alloys of Gd5Si2Ge2-xZnxin vacuum were investigated by powder x-ray diffraction and Vibrating Sample Magnetometer. When the addition amount of Zn substituted for Ge is less than or equal to 0.05, the alloys have monoclinic Gd5Si2Ge2-type phase structure, the magnetic entropy change of Gd5Si2Ge2-xZnx alloys rapidly increase, When x=0.05, the alloy has the excellent magnetic entropy change (|SM|). When the addition amount of Zn substituted for Ge is more than 0.05, the alloys have the orthorhombic Gd5Si4-type phase structure, the magnetic entropy change of Gd5Si2-xGe2-xZnxalloys rapidly decreases. The Curie temperature (Tc) of Gd5Si2Ge2-xZnx alloys linearly increases and the peak of |SM| is broader with the Zn amount substituted for Ge in Gd5Si2Ge2-xZnxalloys in x range from 0-0.15.

ABSTRACTWe have fabricated three-dimensional magnetophotonic (3D MPCs) crystals based on artificial opals. Structural and magnetic properties of 3D MPCs were studied by field emission scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction analysis, and vibrating sample magnetometer. It was shown that increase of volume fraction of magnetite in the opal lattice leads to a dramatic decrease of transmitted light intensity in the visible region. We also found considerable changes in the Faraday rotation inside the (111) photonic bandgap of an opal—magnetite magnetophotonic crystal.

AbstractIn the present study pure and doped gallium nitride (GaN) nanocrystals were synthesized using gallium trichloride (GaCl3), ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA) and cobalt chloride as raw materials at a temperature of 900 °C in ammonia (NH3) atmosphere. The XRD spectrum for pure and cobalt doped GaN nanocrystals shows the formation of single phase wurtzite structure. No impurity phases were observed in the X-ray diffraction pattern for 5% Co doped sample whereas secondary phases were observed when the doping concentration exceeds 5 %. Shift in X-ray diffraction peaks were observed in Co doped samples towards lower angle side compared to pure GaN, it confirms that the Co atoms introduces in to the GaN lattice. Transmission electron microscopy images were taken for pure and Co doped GaN. Hexagonal morphology was observed in pure GaN samples. The average size of the particle was found to be ˜20 nm for pure and Co doped GaN. The magnetic measurements were carried out for the Co (5% & 10%) doped samples both at 10K and 300K. Clear hysteresis loop in the magnetization curve suggest the presence of ferromagnetic behavior in cobalt doped GaN. Temperature dependent magnetization (M-T) measurements were also carried out for doped samples using Super Conducting Quantum Interface Device (SQUID) from 10K to 300K The results have been discussed and correlated to structural and magnetic properties of the materials.

High-pressure (HP) structural and magnetic properties of a magnetic coordination polymer {[NiII(pyrazole)4]2[NbIV(CN)8]·4H2O}n (Ni2Nb) are presented, discussed and compared with its two previously reported analogs {[MnII(pyrazole)4]2[NbIV(CN)8]·4H2O}n (Mn2Nb) and {[FeII(pyrazole)4]2[NbIV(CN)8]·4H2O}n (Fe2Nb). Ni2Nb shows a significant decrease of the long-range ferromagnetic ordering under high pressure when compared to Mn2Nb, where the pressure enhances the Tc (magnetic ordering temperature), or to Fe2Nb exhibiting a pressure-induced spin crossover. The different HP magnetic responses of the three compounds were rationalized and correlated with the structural models as determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

The zeolitic imidazolate frameworks ZIF-8 and ZIF-67 harbour a series of fascinating stimuli responsive properties. Looking at their responsitivity to hydrostatic pressure as stimulus, open questions exist regarding the isotropic compression with non-penetrating pressure transmitting media. By applying a state-of-the-art high-pressure powder X-ray diffraction setup, we revisit the high-pressure behaviour of ZIF-8 and ZIF-67 up to p = 0.4 GPa in small pressure increments. We observe a drastic, reversible change of high-pressure powder X-ray diffraction data at p = 0.3 GPa, discovering large volume structural flexibility in ZIF-8 and ZIF-67. Our results imply a shallow underlying energy landscape in ZIF-8 and ZIF-67, an observation that might point at rich polymorphism of ZIF-8 and ZIF-67, similar to ZIF-4(Zn).
AbstractThe mixed cation triel borate Ga4In4B15O33(OH)3 was synthesized in a Walker-type multianvil apparatus at high-pressure/high-temperature conditions of 12.5 GPa and 1300°C. Although the product could not be reproduced in further experiments, its crystal structure could be reliably determined via single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. Ga4In4B15O33(OH)3 crystallizes in the tetragonal space group I41/a (origin choice 2) with the lattice parameters a = 11.382(2), c = 15.244(2) Å, and V = 1974.9(4) Å3. The structure of the quaternary triel borate consists of a complex network of BO4 tetrahedra, edge-sharing InO6 octahedra in dinuclear units, and very dense edge-sharing GaO6 octahedra in tetranuclear units.

The Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles obtained by the aqueous coprecipitation method are characterized systematically using scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction and vibrating sample magnetometer. These magnetic nanoparticles are spheric, dispersive, and have average grain size of 50 nm. The size and magnetic properties of Fe3O4 nanoparticles can be tuned by the reaction temperature. All samples exhibit high saturation magnetization (Ms=53.4 emu·g-1) and superparamagnetic behavior with a block temperature (TB) of 215K. These properties make such Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles worthy candidates for the magnetic carriers of targeted-drug or gene therapy in future.
