The constraint of a wireless network has motivated many researchers to develop network-aware applications that can dynamically adjust the users' demand based on network resources. For this to happen, applications need to have some mechanism that can estimate the network bandwidth by simply adjusting their behavior based on the collected network characteristics information. In the past, there have been several proposals that provide passive and active bandwidth estimation approaches for wired and wireless network. However, little effort has been spent to address the crucial issues of reliability and congestion control especially in a wireless network environment, which stay as a sticking point for the success of network-aware application. This paper focuses on providing accurate, low-intrusiveness, and fast-convergence time bandwidth estimation for network-aware application architecture. The experimental results validate the efficiency of the proposed solution in terms of accuracy, intrusiveness, and timelines.

In 802.11 wireless network, a large number of multimedia applications are emerging. Accurate end-to-end bandwidth estimation techniques can help these applications adjust their behavior accordingly, such as stream’s bitrate adaptation, to improve quality of service. However, most current bandwidth estimation techniques are designed for wired networks that have high intrusiveness and consume long convergence time, which cannot be applied in resource-limited wireless network. In this article, we present a novel bandwidth estimation tool for IEEE 802.11 wireless network, which only needs to be deployed in one end of the end-to-end path and estimate available bandwidth based on round-trip-time measurements with low intrusiveness and short convergence time. We compare our tool with another state-of-the-art tool on an IEEE 802.11 wireless testbed, and the experimental results show that our tool has higher accuracy.

Human motion animation has been one of the major research topics in the field of computer graphics for decades. Techniques developed in this area help present human motions in various applications. This is crucial for enhancing the realism as well as promoting the user interest in the applications. To carry this merit to e-learning applications, we have developed efficient techniques for delivering human motion information over the Internet to collaborating e-learning users and revealing the motion information in the client machines with different rendering capability. Our method offers a mechanism to extract human motion data at various levels of detail (LoD). We also propose a set of importance factors to allow an e-learning system to determine the LoD of the human motion for rendering as well as transmission, according to the importance of the motion and the available network bandwidth. At the end of the paper, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the new method with some experimental results.

Concurrent Multi-path Transfer extension of the Stream Control Transport Protocol (CMT-SCTP) has great potential to improve the utilization of scarce network bandwidth resource. Traditional CMT-SCTP adopts Round Robin (RR) algorithms to carry out packet scheduling that could affect the performance of SCTP traffic as unordered issues. In this paper, we discuss the unordered issues and propose a novel packet scheduling algorithm to improve the performance in heterogeneous wireless network. Our main idea is predicting the packet arriving time and then provides a path selection strategy. Through measuring round-trip time (RTT) and available bandwidth, we achieve an algorithm to predict the arriving time of data packets on one path, then give a reasonable path selection strategy to make sure that data arrives in the right order. By using proposed algorithm, the unordered packets and receive buffer blocking are reduced. We evaluate the performance of our algorithm by comparing it with the RR algorithm and show that it can resolve several performance issues.

Abstract The network calculus provides a theoretical background for description of traffic in computer networks. Using this tool in explanation of the so-called pathchirp method of measuring the available bandwidth, the validity and range of application of some relationships exploited are verified in this paper. The derivations are carried out in a wider context than that considered in a recent paper by Liebeherr et al. published in IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking on network bandwidth estimation, providing thereby new insights and outcomes. These results, summarized in a table, show a means of bounding the service curve, depending upon its convexity or non-convexity property assumed and upon the linearity or non-linearity of a network considered. Moreover, it is shown here that the nonlinear network example analyzed by Liebeherr et al. can be viewed equivalently as a linear parametric network. For this network, the behaviour of the cross traffic is considered in a more detail, too.

Recently, HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) based adaptive streaming (HAS) has been proposed as a solution for efficient use of network resources. HAS performs rate adaptation that adjusts the video quality according to the network conditions. The conventional approaches for rate adaptation involve accurately estimating the available bandwidth or exploiting the playback buffer in HAS clients rather than estimating the network bandwidth. In this paper, we present a playback buffer model for rate adaptation and propose a new buffer-based rate adaptation scheme. First, we model the playback buffer as a queueing system that stores video segments. The proposed scheme selects the next video bitrate that minimizes the difference between the current buffer occupancy and the expected value from the playback buffer model. The evaluation results indicated that the proposed scheme achieves higher video quality than conventional algorithms and can cope with various environments without the tuning of the configuration parameters.

The article presents the experience of mass organization of distance learning in organizations of secondary general and vocational education in March—May 2020 in connection with the difficult epidemiological situation in Russia. The possibilities of the 1C:Education system for organizing the educational process in a distance format, the peculiarities of organizing distance interaction in schools and colleges are considered, the results of using the system are summarized, examples of the successful use of the system in specific educational organizations are given. Based on the questionnaire survey of users, a number of capabilities of the 1C:Education system have been identified, which are essential for the full-fledged transfer of the educational process from full-time to distance learning. The nature and frequency of the use of electronic educational resources in various general education subjects in schools and colleges are analyzed, the importance of the presence in the distance learning system not only of a digital library of ready-made educational materials, but also of tools for creating author’s content is assessed. On the basis of an impersonal analysis of user actions in the system, a number of problems were identified that teachers and students faced in the process of an emergency transition to distance learning.
