Practical implementation of a STEP-based architecture to provide a fully integrated and interoperable platform of data exchange has always been an intriguing issue. A variety of CAD/CAM environments are struggling to embed and support STEP standard and its protocols in order to seamlessly operate within global data exchange. However, apparent paucity of efficient and reliable structure for data communication, manipulation, and restoration has remarkably hindered the desired progress. In this paper, taking these shortcomings into account, a practical architecture is introduced and STEP-based agents are implemented and installed on the platform. Moreover, feature recognition, interaction, and machining precedence as crucial issues of CAD/CAM research have been considered in developing the interoperable platform. Seamless integration and interaction of CAD/CAM modules are provided in the proposed system. The prototype is finally verified and discussed through a case study.

Abstract This paper presents a case study in the use of the Internet as a medium for exchange of information and delivery of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) capability. The case study describes a collaboration among researchers and staff at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and Thar Designs, Inc., a small business in Pittsburgh, PA that designs and sells high-pressure fluid pumps. The objective of this case study is to identify the needs of small businesses in engineering industry in the area of Internet-based CAD/CAM services. The Internet-based interaction performed in this study encompassed various stages in an iterative product development process, consisting of design, data exchange, manufacturability analysis, and fabrication of a prototype.

Based on the UG 6.0 platform, with the three dimensional digital technology, combined with UG CAM template customization, this paper is about the research and development of hole groove class feature extraction module, automatically selecting hole groove parts feature information, through reasoning, to implement the corresponding processing template calls, with the aid of process parameters of knowledge database to realize automatic processing of information given, then to realize the automatic generation of NC program, and to realize the seamless integration of CAD/CAM.

The recent trend towards open data and open science as well as a demand for holistic and interdisciplinary research requires platforms that allow the distribution and exchange of research data, including geographic information. While the requirements and benefits of data exchange are widely discussed, there are few proposals on how to implement data platforms that not only permit the exchange of research data among researchers, but also permit to distribute research results and data to the interest public. We elaborate what points are important for implementing a (geographic) data repository and propose then to adopt the concept of Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDI) as a solution for the implementation of research data repositories. We present as a case study the geographic data and document repository of the Chilean research Centre on Sustainable Urban Development (CEDEUS), the CEDEUS Observatory. Besides the infrastructure to host and distribute data, communication tools are an important component of such a data repository service. For this case study we analyse which things have worked well and which things have not worked well based on the experiences collected during three years of operation. We close with some recommendations for the implementation of data repositories for research.

Abstract This paper describes the optimization of preventive maintenance (PM) over a finite planning horizon in a semi-Markov framework. In this framework, the asset may be operating, and providing income for the asset owner, or not operating and undergoing PM, or not operating and undergoing corrective maintenance following failure. PM is triggered when the asset has been operating for τ time units. A number m of transitions specifies the finite horizon. This system is described with a set of recurrence relations, and their z-transform is used to determine the value of τ that maximizes the average accumulated reward over the horizon. We study under what conditions a solution can be found, and for those specific cases the solution τ* is calculated. Despite the complexity of the mathematical solution, the result obtained allows the analyst to provide a quick and easy-to-use tool for practical application in many real-world cases. To demonstrate this, the method has been implemented for a case study, and its accuracy and practical implementation were tested using Monte Carlo simulation and direct calculation.

Abstract In recent years the transition of marine navigation to the digital era has been gaining momentum. Implementation of e-Navigation solutions varies from country to country in terms of their priorities, goals, levels and effects. Maritime authorities in Poland have been setting the pace in this transition process, not only in Poland but also in general as a global solution. The most recent example is the planned deployment of a variety of e-Navigation tools in the Vistula Lagoon: from GNSS-RTK Ground-Based Augmentation System, to virtual and synthetic aids to navigation, high-resolution bathymetry and advanced navigational software for piloting. The major objectives of this paper are, first, to summarise recent dynamics in the e-Navigation field, and second, to present a practical implementation of the e-Navigation concept in the Vistula Lagoon area.

<p>The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopetd by the United Nations in 2016 include the SDG 15.3 „Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN)“, which aims to reduce land degradation by national efforts of the member states. Three indicators for land degradation were gloablly identified: landcover, land productivity and soil organic carbon stocks (SOC). In particular, the assessment of SOC is challenging in countries where (a) spatial digital data is largely missing and (b) SOC mapping is difficult due to remotness typical for high mountain regions . Global data provided by the Secretariat of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) may be used for reporting, but experience from various countries indicates inaccuracies due to generalisation. This is especially the case for SOC. Moreover, to report on changes in SOC stocks, a comprehensive baseline is mandatory. In order to approach these challenges, Kirgistan, which has signed the SDG’s but still lacks a baseline for SOC, has been chosen for a case study.</p><p>In a multinational project we developed a scientifically based method to map and assess SOC stocks enabling a nationwide upscaling of SOC data (baseline). Using globally available data on landcover, elevation, climate and national soil data, „representative SOC units“ were identified prior to sampling. We assume that mainly these factors determine the spatial variability of SOC and that similar SOC stocks can be expected at comparable site conditions. More than 90% of the surface area, that potentially store SOC, is coverd by only 20 representative units, which were sampled 3-fold in the field. Sampling location within a single unit was determined using a drone to identify a representative location. Using the drone was especially helpful as sampling sites in a high mountain region were often extremely remote. During sampling small-scale variability of SOC was considered in the field. To determine SOC stocks, bulk density of the fine soil, coarse fragments and amount of roots were measured in the laboratory. Furthermore, pH, clay, silt and sand content were analysed to identify further drivers for SOC distribution.</p><p>Results show that spatial distribution of SOC in such a high mountain region is mainly controlled by landcover (cropland, grassland, forest), elevation, bulk density and clay content. Within single landcover classes topographic indices, such as aspect, further determine SOC distribution. This is especially the case for grassland, which is the dominant landcover in Kirgistan (53%). For the assessment of SOC stocks different approaches were compared. For instance, precise assessment of stocks using the bulk density of the fine soil corrected for coarse fragments leads to significantly lower SOC stocks when compared to the global data provided by the UNCCD.</p>

Abstract This paper presents a holistic approach to modern oilfield and well surveillance through the inclusion of state-of-the-art edge computing applications in combination with a novel type of data transmission technology and algorithms developed in-house for automatic condition monitoring of SRP systems. The objective is to enable the responsible specialist staff to focus on the most important decisions regarding oilfield management, rather than wasting time with data collection and preparation. An own operated data communication system, based on LPWAN-technology transfers the dyno-cards, generated by an electric load cell, into the in-house developed production assistance software platform. Suitable programmed AI-algorithms enable automatic condition detection of the incoming dyno cards, including conversion and analysis of the corresponding subsurface dynamograms. A smart alarming system informs about occurring failure conditions and specifies whether an incident of rod rupture, pump-off condition, gas lock or paraffin precipitation occurred in the well. A surface mounted measuring device delivers liquid level and bottomhole pressure information automatically into the software. Based on these diverse data, the operations team plans the subsequent activities. The holistic application approach is illustrated using the case study of an SPR-operated well in an Austrian brownfield.

In the quest for a sustainable economy of the Earth's resources and for renewable sources of energy, a promising avenue is to exploit the vast quantity of polysaccharide molecules contained in green wastes. To that end, the decomposition of pectin appears to be an interesting target because this polymeric carbohydrate is abundant in many fruit pulps and soft vegetables. To quantitatively study this degradation process, here we designed a bioreactor that is continuously fed with de-esterified pectin (PGA). Thanks to the pectate lyases produced by bacteria cultivated in the vessel, the PGA is depolymerized into oligogalacturonates (UGA), which are continuously extracted from the tank. A mathematical model of our system predicted that the conversion efficiency of PGA into UGA increases in a range of coefficients of dilution until reaching an upper limit where the fraction of UGA that is extracted from the bioreactor is maximized. Results from experiments with a continuous reactor hosting a strain of the plant pathogenic bacterium Dickeya dadantii and in which the dilution coefficients were varied quantitatively validated the predictions of our model. A further theoretical analysis of the system enabled an a priori comparison of the efficiency of eight other pectate lyase–producing microorganisms with that of D. dadantii. Our findings suggest that D. dadantii is the most efficient microorganism and therefore the best candidate for a practical implementation of our scheme for the bioproduction of UGA from PGA.
