The sliding mode control has the merits with respect to the variation of the disturbance and robustness. In this paper, the sensorless sliding-mode observer with least mean squared error approach for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) to detect the rotor position by counter electromotive force and then compute motor speed is designed and implemented. In addition, the neural network control is also used to compensate the PI gain tuning to increase the speed accuracy without regarding the errors of the current measurement and motor noise. In this paper, a digital signal processor TMS320F2812 utilizes its high-speed ADC module to get current feedback information and thus to estimate the rotor position and takes advantage of the built-in modules to achieve SVPWM current control so that the senseless speed control will be accomplished. The correctness and effectiveness of the proposed control system will be verified from the experimental results.

A robust high-speed sliding mode control (SMC) of three phase permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is presented. The SMC served for inner speed control while a simplified hysteresis current control (HCC) scheme was used in the outer current control to generate gating signals for the inverter switches. The present research leverages on the ability of SMC to directly access system speed error which it attempts driving to zero by cancelling modelling uncertainties and disturbances. Performance comparison was done for the SMC model and an existing model having classical PI controller. With the initial positive speed command of 200 rpm at 5 Nm constant loading, rotor speed with SMC neatly settled to the reference speed at 0.085 seconds without overshoot while the rotor speed of the model with PI controller settled at 0.217 seconds after overshoot. This translates to 155.3% speed enhancement. Similar superior speed performance of the SMC was also observed during recovering from sudden speed reversal. While the SMC model recovered and settled to the reference speed of -200 rpm at 0.369 seconds, the model with PI controller settled at 0.482 seconds. From the results, it can be seen that SMC demonstared superiority over the conventioanl PI controller for complex drives systems.

The paper proposes a new speed control method to improve control quality and expand the Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors speed range. The Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM) speed range enlarging is based on the newly proposed power control principle between two voltage sources instead of winding current control as the conventional Field Oriented Control method. The power management between the inverter and PMSM motor allows the Flux-Weakening obstacle to be overcome entirely, leading to a significant extension of the motor speed to a constant power range. Based on motor power control, a new control method is proposed and allows for efficiently reducing current and torque ripple caused by the imbalance between the power supply of the inverter and the power required through the desired stator current. The proposed method permits for not only an enhanced PMSM speed range, but also a robust stability in PMSM speed control. The simulation results have demonstrated the efficiency and stability of the proposed control method.

A novel speed control method based on sliding mode control and disturbance observer is studied for permanent magnet synchronous motor drives. Different from the conventional speed and current cascade control structure in the field-oriented vector control, the new controller adopts the single-loop control structure, in which the speed and quadrate axes current controllers are combined together. First, a multiple-surface sliding mode controller is designed for the speed control system of permanent magnet synchronous motor. Although the sliding mode controller has the strong robustness for the matched disturbance in the system, it still cannot deal with mismatched disturbance effectively, such as external load disturbance and some parameter variations. Thus, the disturbance observer is introduced to estimate the disturbance in the motor, which is designed by combining the proposed sliding mode controller. Finally, the effectiveness is tested under various conditions by both simulation and experiment. The results show that the designed controller has the fast transient response and robustness under different operating conditions.
