We conducted this meta-analysis aimed to evaluate diagnostic accuracy of miR-210 in human cancers. A total of 673 cancer patients and 606 cancer-free individuals from 13 studies were contained in this meta-analysis. The overall diagnostic results in our study showed that the pooled sensitivity was 0.70, specificity was 0.76, and the AUC was 0.80. In addition, the PLR and NLR were 2.9 and 0.39, with DOR of 8. After the outliner exclusion detected by sensitivity analysis, these parameters had minimal change, which confirmed the stability of our work. The results in our studies showed that the miR-210 assay yielded relatively moderate accuracy in cancer patients and cancer-free individual differentiation. More basic researches are needed to highlight its role as supplement in clinical treatment.

Abstract Background: Activated eosinophils have been deemed to affect carcinogenesis and tumor progression via various mechanisms in tumor microenvironment. However, the prognostic role of tumor-associated tissue eosinophilia (TATE) in human cancers still remains controversial. Therefore, we performed the meta-analysis to better understand the role of TATE in prognosis prediction for cancer patients. Methods: We searched PubMed and EBSCO to identify the studies evaluating the association of TATE and overall survival (OS) and/or disease-free survival (DFS) in cancer patients, then computed extracted data into hazard ratios (HRs) for OS, DFS and clinicopathological features such as lymph node metastasis etc with STATA 12.0. Results: A total of 6125 patients from 25 published studies were incorporated into this meta-analysis. We found that the presence of TATE significantly improved OS and 5-year DFS in all types of cancers. In stratified analyses based on cancer types, pooled results indicated that eosinophils infiltrating into tumor tissue was significantly associated with better OS in oral cancer, esophageal carcinoma and colorectal cancer. In addition, TATE was significantly inversely correlated with lymph node metastasis, tumor stage and lymphatic invasion of cancer. Conclusion: TATE leads to a favorable clinical outcome in cancer patients, implicating that it is a valuable biomarker for prognostic prediction for human cancers and clinical application of biological response modifiers or agonists promoting TATE may be the novel therapeutic strategy for patients.

In the present study, we aimed at determining the potential role of rs12917 polymorphism of the O-6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) gene in the occurrence of cancer. Based on the available data from the online database, we performed an updated meta-analysis. We retrieved 537 articles from our database research and finally selected a total of 54 case–control studies (21010 cases and 34018 controls) for a series of pooling analyses. We observed an enhanced risk in cancer cases compared with controls, using the genetic models T/T compared with C/C (P-value of association test <0.001; odds ratio (OR) = 1.29) and T/T compared with C/C+C/T (P<0.001; OR = 1.32). We detected similar positive results in the subgroups ‘Caucasian’, and ‘glioma’ (all P<0.05; OR > 1). However, we detected negative results in our analyses of most of the other subgroups (P>0.05). Begg’s and Egger’s tests indicated that the results were free of potential publication bias, and sensitivity analysis suggested the stability of the pooling results. In summary, the T/T genotype of MGMT rs12917 is likely to be linked to an enhanced susceptibility to cancer overall, especially glioma, in the Caucasian population.

In this study, the authors evaluated the potential role of an activity-based guitar training program on reducing anxiety and providing fulfillment for younger relatives of cancer patients. Ten active members of KHYD (The Society for Relatives of Cancer Patients), between ages 11 and 17 participated in an 8-week guitar education program. The participants filled out two questionnaires before and after their engagement in the 8-week program, one to measure changes in their anxiety levels (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory) and the other to measure changes in their general fulfillment levels (Multidimensional Students’ Life Satisfaction Scale). Wilcoxon signed rank test, as well as descriptive statistics were used in the analysis of data. Mean rank differences were observed to be statistically significant with respect to total state and trait anxiety scores; in both cases, the participants’ scores decreased after their engagement in the program. Statistically significant mean rank differences were also observed in the overall MSLSS scores and its “friends” and “environment” sub-dimensions; with respect to these, participants’ scores increased after their engagement in the program. Recommendations for more comprehensive, larger-scale studies are given at the end.

Several studies suggest that upregulated expression of the long non-coding RNA HOX transcript antisense RNA (HOTAIR) is a negative predictive biomarker for numerous cancers. Herein, we performed a meta-analysis to further investigate the prognostic value of HOTAIR expression in diverse human cancers. To this end, a systematic literature review was conducted in order to select scientific studies relevant to the association between HOTAIR expression and clinical outcomes, including overall survival (OS), recurrence-free survival (RFS)/disease-free survival (DFS), and progression-free survival (PFS)/metastasis-free survival (MFS) of cancer patients. Collectively, 53 eligible studies including a total of 4873 patients were enrolled in the current meta-analysis. Pooled hazard ratios (HRs) with their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to assess the relationship between HOTAIR and cancer patients’ survival. Elevated HOTAIR expression was found to be significantly associated with OS, RFS/DFS and PFS/MFS in diverse types of cancers. These findings were also corroborated by the results of bioinformatics analysis on overall survival. Therefore, based on our findings, HOTAIR could serve as a potential biomarker for the prediction of cancer patient survival in many different types of human cancers.

AbstractMicroRNAs (miRs) are small non-coding RNAs with key gene regulatory functions. Recent evidence has shown that miRs have a central role in shaping the biology of the Tumor Microenvironment (TME). The discovery that some exosomes contain high levels of miR cargo that shuttle between cells and mediate intercellular cross-talk has shifted the focus of miR research towards understanding the biological role of exosomic miRs. In this review, we highlight the emerging role of exosomic miRs in molding the tumor microenvironment towards pro-tumor conditions by altering intercellular communication. We briefly discuss some mechanisms of selective loading of miRs into exosomes, as well as emerging evidence that exosomic miRs are present in all biological fluids. Furthermore, we describe the differences in the exosomic miR signatures between cancer patients and healthy controls, and the potential role of exosomic miRs as diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic biomarkers.
