Background. In recent years, there is growing literature on the prognostic significance of programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) in cholangiocarcinoma (CCA); however, data have been conflicting. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess the correlation between PD-L1 and prognosis in CCA through meta-analysis. Methods. Published studies were retrieved from the Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library up to April 17, 2020. The relationships between PD-L1 expression and survival outcomes were assessed using hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results. Eighteen studies consisting of 2012 patients were included. Overexpression of PD-L1 was significantly associated with worse overall survival (OS) (HR=1.58, 95%CI=1.30−1.92, p<0.001) but not with poor disease-free survival (DFS) (HR=1.03, 95%CI=0.68−1.55, p=0.895) in CCA. Moreover, PD-L1 was associated with low differentiation (OR=1.43, 95%CI=1.09−1.87, p=0.010) and higher pN stage (OR=1.45, 95%CI=1.10−1.92, p=0.009) but not with sex, TNM stage, vascular invasion, perineural invasion, age, or tumor size. Conclusion. High PD-L1 expression was associated with worse OS, poor differentiation, and higher pN stage in patients with CCA. PD-L1 could be a potential prognostic marker in CCA.

Abstract Background:Small nucleolar RNA host gene 3 (SNHG3) is a promising long non-coding RNA that may possess prognostic value for different types of tumors. The objective of this meta-analysis is to evaluate the prognostic value of lncRNA SNHG3 in cancer patients.Methods:A systematic literature search of the PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Medline, Web of Science, CNKI, Weipu, and Wanfang electronic databases was carried out in this meta-anaysis. The synthetic hazard ratios (HRs) or odd ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were obtained to determine the prognostic and clinicopathological significance of SNHG3 expression in tumors. Results:The final meta-anaysis included 17 studies that contained 2072 patients. The pooled results provided evidence that SNHG3 overexpression predicted reduced overall survival (OS) (HR=2.15, 95%CI: 1.76–2.63, P<0.00001), recurrence-free survival (RFS) ( HR=2.22, 95%CI: 1.04–4.76, P=0.04) and disease-free survival (DFS) (HR=2.04, 95%CI: 1.35–3.09, P=0.0007) for various cancers. Additionally, the SNHG3 overexpression was concerned with tumor node metastasis (TNM) stage (III/IV vs. I/II, OR=2.91, 95%CI: 1.60–5.29, P=0.0005), lymph node metastasis (LNM) (positive vs negative, OR=5.00,95%CI:2.82–8.87,P<0.00001), distant metastasis (DM) (positive vs negative, OR=2.29, 95%CI: 1.52–3.47, P<0.0001) and tumor size (larger vs smaller, OR=1.80, 95%CI: 1.04–3.11, P=0.04).Conclusions:Our results indicated that SNHG3 overexpression was closely correlated with shorter OS in multiple cancer types, suggesting that SNHG3 might function as a promising predictor for clinical outcomes in cancer.

Abstract Background: CD44 is the primary receptor for hyaluronic acid and serves as a marker for cancer stem cells. CD44v9 is one of CD44’s variants and takes part in cancer’s growth and metastasis. However, the prognostic roles and clinical features of CD44v9 in cancers remain unclear. Therefore, we conducted this meta-analysis to summarize the prognostic significance and clinical features of CD44v9 in human solid cancers.Methods: we systematically searched all of related studies in PubMed, the Web of Science, Embase and Cochrane library up to June 2020. We analyzed the pooled hazard ratios (HRs) and odds ratios (ORs) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to assess the prognostic functions and clinical features of CD44v9 in various human solid cancers.Results: In this meta-analysis, we included 1705 cancer patients among 12 studies. Results indicated that high expression of CD44v9 was significantly related to poorer overall survival (OS) (HR=1.60, 95%CI 1.28-1.99, P<0.0001), recurrence-free survival/progression-free survival/disease-free survival (RFS/PFS/DFS).( HR=1.81, 95%CI 1.16-2.84, P=0.009) and disease-specific survival/cancer-specific survival (DSS/CSS) (HR=2.93, 95%CI 1.69-5.10, P<0.001). At the same time, we also found that high expression of CD44v9 increased the possibility of lymphoid infiltrates (OR=1.59, 95%CI 1.16-2.20, P=0.005), vascular invasion (OR=1.57, 95%CI 1.11-2.22, P=0.010) and higher TNM stage (OR=1.63, 95%CI 1.19-2.23, P=0.002).Conclusion: Our results demonstrate that CD44v9 overexpression is associated with worse OS, RFS/PFS/CFS and DSS/CSS in patients with solid cancers, which might be a biomarker in the diagnosis and prognosis of cancers in the future.

BackgroundThe pretreatment prognostic nutritional index (PNI) is correlated with poor prognosis in several malignancies. However, the prognostic role of PNI in patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC) remains unclear. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis to investigate the prognostic significance of PNI in patients with RCC.MethodsWe searched the PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, and Cochrane Library databases up to February 2021. Pooled hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to estimate correlation between PNI and survival endpoints in RCC.ResultsTen studies with 4,908 patients were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled results indicated that a low PNI associated with poor overall survival (HR = 2.10, 95% CI = 1.67–2.64, p&lt;0.001), shorter progression-free survival, disease-free survival, recurrence-free survival (HR = 1.99, 95% CI = 1.67–2.36, p&lt;0.001), and poor cancer-specific survival (HR = 2.95, 95% CI = 1.61–5.39, p&lt;0.001). Additionally, the prognostic ability of PNI was not affected by subgroup analysis factors.ConclusionThe meta-analysis indicated that low PNI associated with shorter survival outcomes in patients with RCC. Therefore, PNI could be used as an effective prognostic indicator in RCC.

Abstract Background The prognostic value of pre-treatment platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in patients with urothelial carcinoma (UC) remains controversial. Therefore, this meta-analysis aimed to identify the prognostic impact of PLR on UC. Methods The PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases were systematically searched. Hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to summarize the correlations between PLR and overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), disease-free survival (DFS), and cancer-specific survival (CSS). Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% CIs were used to measure the association between PLR and tumor clinicopathological factors. Results The meta-analysis included 15 studies published from 2015 to 2019 with a total of 5354 patients. Overall, a high PLR was correlated to poorer PFS (HR = 1.81, 95% CI 1.28–2.56, p = 0.001) and DFS (HR = 1.09, 95% CI 1.31–2.16, p < 0.001) but not poor OS (HR = 1.23, 95% CI 0.95–1.59, p = 0.124) or CSS (HR = 1.000, 95% CI 0.998–1.002, p = 0.919) in UC. In addition, an elevated PLR was correlated with patient age > 65 years (OR = 1.72, 95% CI 1.25–2.38, p = 0.001) and hypertension (OR = 1.48, 95% CI 1.01–2.18, p = 0.046). However, no significant association was observed between PLR and sex (OR = 0.79, 95% CI 0.56–1.14, p = 0.206) or diabetes (OR = 1.29, 95% CI 0.77–2.15, p = 0.333). Conclusions Our results demonstrated a significant correlation between elevated PLR and poor prognosis in UC. The prognostic role of PLR may help guide the management and prognostication of UC patients.

Background: The prognostic value of the modified Glasgow prognostic score (mGPS) in patients with pancreatic cancer is controversial, based on previous studies. Therefore, this meta-analysis aimed to explore the relationship between mGPS and prognosis in pancreatic cancer. Methods: The databases PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were searched to identify eligible studies. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to estimate the associations between mGPS score and survival outcomes. Results: A total of 26 studies with 5198 patients were included in this meta-analysis. In a pooled analysis, elevated mGPS predicted poorer overall survival (OS; HR = 1.98, 95% CI, 1.65-2.37, P < .001). In addition, elevated mGPS was also significantly associated with worse progression-free survival (PFS), disease-free survival (DFS), and cancer-specific survival (CSS; HR = 1.95, 95% CI, 1.36-2.80, P < .001). Subgroup analyses confirmed a significant association between mGPS and survival outcomes. Conclusions: Our meta-analysis demonstrated that high mGPS was correlated to worse OS, PFS, DFS, and CSS in patients with pancreatic cancer. Therefore, mGPS could be employed as an effective prognostic factor for pancreatic cancer in clinical practice.

Background. Numerous studies have reported the prognostic significance of serum apolipoprotein A-I (ApoA-I) in various cancers, but the results have been inconsistent. The current meta-analysis was performed to investigate the association between ApoA-I level and prognosis in human malignancies. Methods. A literature search was performed using the electronic platforms of the PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Embase, Wanfang, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases to obtain eligible articles published up to May 20, 2018. Pooled hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were calculated to assess the prognostic values of the ApoA-I level in cancers using STATA 12.0 software. Results. A total of 14 studies involving 9295 patients were included. The results indicated that low ApoA-I level was significantly associated with poor overall survival (OS) (HR = 0.52, 95% CI: 0.44–0.61). Significant relationships between the ApoA-I level and OS were specifically detected in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC, HR = 0.63, 95% CI: 0.54–0.73), colorectal cancer (CRC, HR = 0.48, 95% CI: 0.19–0.76), and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC, HR = 0.46, 95% CI: 0.27–0.65). The subgroup analyses for OS also further confirmed the prognostic significance of the ApoA-I level in cancers. Moreover, lower Apo A-I was associated with unfavorable cancer-specific survival (CSS, HR: 0.47, 95% CI: 0.19–0.76) in cancers, and low ApoA-I level was clearly associated with inferior total time to recurrence (TTR, HR: 0.43, 95% CI: 0.29–0.58) in HCC, poorer locoregional recurrence-free survival (LRFS) and distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS) (HR: 0.58, 95% CI: 0.42–0.74 for LRFS; HR: 0.65, 95% CI: 0.41–0.89 for DMFS) in NPC, and shorter disease-free survival (DFS, HR: 0.64, 95% CI: 0.43–0.84) in cancers. Conclusions. Low ApoA-I level might be an unfavorable prognostic factor in multiple malignancies, and serum ApoA-I could serve as a noninvasive marker to predict cancer prognosis.

Abstract Background Tumor-infiltrating B lymphocytes (TIL-Bs) is a heterogeneous population of lymphocytes. The prognostic value of TIL-Bs in patients with breast cancer remains controversial. Here we conducted this meta-analysis to clarify the association of TIL-Bs with outcomes of patients with breast cancer. Methods We searched PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science to identify relevant studies assessing the prognostic significance of TIL-Bs in patients with breast cancer. Fixed- or random-effects models were used to evaluate the pooled hazard ratios (HRs) for overall survival (OS), breast cancer-specific survival (BCSS), disease-free survival (DFS), and relapse-free survival (RFS) in breast cancer. Results A total of 8 studies including 2628 patients were included in our study. Pooled analyses revealed that high level of TIL-Bs was associated with longer OS (pooled HR = 0.42, 95% CI 0.24–0.60), BCSS (pooled HR = 0.66, 95% CI 0.47–0.85), and DFS/RFS (pooled HR = 0.41, 95% CI 0.27–0.55). Conclusions This meta-analysis suggests that TIL-Bs could be a promising prognostic marker for breast cancer. Novel therapeutic strategies for breast cancer treatment could be developed by enhancement of B cell-mediated antitumor immunity.

Background: The incidence and mortality rates of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are increasing worldwide. Therefore, there is an urgent need to elucidate the molecular drivers of HCC for potential early diagnosis and individualized treatment. Whether c-Myc expression plays a role in the clinicopathology and prognosis of patients with HCC remains controversial. This meta-analysis aimed to survey the prognostic role of c-Myc in HCC.Methods: We searched PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases for studies published through March 2020 that examined the association between c-Myc expression and clinicopathology or prognosis in HCC patients. The pooled hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to investigate the prognostic significance of c-Myc expression. Odds ratios were calculated to evaluate the association between c-Myc expression and clinicopathologic features. We also tested for publication bias.Results: Our meta-analysis included nine studies with 981 patients with HCC published between 1999 and 2016. A meta-analysis of these studies demonstrated that high c-Myc expression indicated a poor overall survival (OS) (HR = 2.260, 95% CI: 1.660–3.080, and p &lt; 0.001) and disease-free survival (DFS) (HR = 1.770, 95% CI: 1.430–2.450, and p &lt; 0.001) in patients with HCC. However, high c-Myc expression was not associated with HBsAg, pathological type, TNM stage, or cirrhosis. We did not find any significant publication bias among the included studies, indicating that our estimates were robust and reliable.Conclusion: c-Myc overexpression could predict poor OS and DFS in HCC patients. c-Myc could be a useful prognostic biomarker and therapeutic target for HCC.

Background Recently, microRNA-221 has been found to be abnormally expressed in hepatocellular carcinoma; however, its clinical value has not been summarised. This meta-analysis aimed to assess the prognostic significance of miR-221 in hepatocellular carcinoma. Material and Methods PubMed, Science Direct, Web of Science, Scopus, Ovid MEDLINE, EMbase, Google Scholar, the Cochrane Library, CNKI, CBM, VIP and Wanfang databases were searched for eligible articles. The endpoints included overall survival, progression-free survival, recurrence-free survival, metastasis-free survival, disease-free survival. Hazard ratios with 95% confidence intervals were used to explore the relationship between miR-221 expression and clinical survival results of liver cancer patients. Subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis were performed. Begg’s test and Egger’s test were conducted to evaluate publication bias. Results A total of nine studies including 607 patients were recruited for this meta-analysis. The pooled hazard ratios displayed that high miR-221 expression was remarkably associated with poorer overall survival (hazard ratio = 1.91, 95% confidence interval: 1.53–2.38, p < 0.01) and unfavourable progression-free survival/recurrence-free survival/metastasis-free survival/disease-free survival (hazard ratio = 2.02, 95% confidence interval: 1.58–2.57, p < 0.01). The results of Begg’s test and Egger’s test did not exhibit obvious publication bias. Conclusions High expression of miR-221 can predict poor outcome of hepatocellular carcinoma. miR-221 can be used as a promising prognostic biomarker of hepatocellular carcinoma.

Abstract Purpose To systematically evaluate the correlation between PD-L1 expression and clinicopathological features and prognosis of colorectal cancer (CRC). Methods Seven databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Web of Science, CBM, Wanfang, and CNKI) were searched through May 2020. Risk of bias and quality of evidence were assessed by using the Newcastle–Ottawa scale (NOS), and meta-analysis was carried out by using the Review Manager 5.3 software on the studies with the quality evaluation scores ≥ 6. Meta-regression analysis was used to determine the independent role of PD-L1 expression on CRC prognosis after adjusting clinicopathological features and treatment methods. Results A total of 8823 CRC patients in 32 eligible studies. PD-L1 expression was correlated with lymphatic metastasis (yes/no; OR = 1.24, 95% CI (1.11, 1.38)), diameter of tumor (≥ 5 cm/< 5 cm; OR = 1.34, 95% CI (1.06, 1.70)), differentiation (high–middle/low; OR = 0.68, 95% CI (0.53, 0.87)), and vascular invasion (yes/no; OR = 0.80, 95% CI (0.69, 0.92)). PD-L1 expression shortened the overall survival (hazard ratio (HR) = 1.93, 95% CI (1.66, 2.25)), disease-free survival (HR = 1.76, 95% CI (1.50, 2.07)), and progression-free survival (HR = 1.93, 95% CI (1.55, 2.41)). Meta-regression showed that PD-L1 expression played a significant role on poor CRC OS (HR = 1.95, 95% CI (1.92, 3.98)) and disease-free survival (HR = 2.14, 95% CI (0.73, 4.52)). Conclusion PD-L1 expression independently predicted a poor prognosis of CRC.
