Sovereign debt ratings provided by rating agencies measure the solvency of a country, as gauged by a lender or an investor. It is an indication of the risk involved in investment and should be determined correctly and in a well-timed manner. The current system is lacking transparency of rating criteria and mechanism. The present study reconstructs sovereign debt ratings through logical analysis of data (LAD), which is based on the theory of Boolean functions. It organizes groups of countries according to 20 World Bank-defined variables for the period 2012–2015. The Fitch Rating Agency, one of the three big global rating agencies, is used as a case study. An approximate algorithm was crucial in exploring the rating method, in correcting the agency’s errors, and in determining the estimated rating of otherwise unrated countries. The outcome was a decision tree for each year. Each country was assigned a rating. On average, the algorithm reached almost 98% matched ratings in the training set and was verified by 84% in the test set.

Comparison of two optimization models for constructing patterns in the method of logical analysis of data Two optimization models for constructing informative patterns are proposed. An empirical confirmation of the expediency of using the boosting criterion as an objective function of the optimization model for obtaining informative patterns is given.

AbstractEnergy consumed in buildings is a main contributor to CO2 emissions, there is therefore a need to improve the energy performance of buildings, particularly commercial buildings whereby building service systems are often substantially over-designed due to the application of excess margins during the design process. The cooling system of an NHS Hospital was studied and modelled in order to identify if the system was overdesigned, and to quantify the oversizing impact on the system operational and embodied carbon footprints. Looking at the operational energy use and environmental performance of the current system as well as an alternative optimised system through appropriate modelling and calculation, the case study results indicate significant environmental impacts are caused by the oversizing of cooling system. The study also established that it is currently more difficult to obtain an estimate of the embodied carbon footprint of building service systems. It is therefore the responsibility of the machine builders to provide information and data relating to the embodied carbon of their products, which in the longer term, this is likely to become a standard industry requirement.

During geomagnetically disturbed times the surface geomagnetic field often changes abruptly, producing geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) in a number of ground based systems. There are, however, few studies reporting GIC effects which are driven directly by bursty bulk flows (BBFs) in the inner magnetosphere. In this study, we investigate the characteristics and responses of the magnetosphere-ionosphere-ground system during the 7 January 2015 storm by using a multi-point approach which combines space-borne measurements and ground magnetic observations. During the event, multiple BBFs are detected in the inner magnetosphere while the magnetic footprints of both magnetospheric and ionospheric satellites map to the same conjugate region surrounded by a group of magnetometer ground stations. It is suggested that the observed, localized substorm currents are caused by the observed magnetospheric BBFs, giving rise to intense geomagnetic perturbations. Our results provide direct evidence that the wide-range of intense dB/dt (and dH/dt) variations are associated with a large-scale, substorm current system, driven by multiple BBFs.

Familistic welfare capitalism is a model of national political economy prevalent in many regions in the world (Southern Europe, Latin America, and Asia), where the family plays a double role as the key provider of welfare and a key agent in the model's socio-economic and political reproduction. The article offers a new approach to the study this model by adopting an expanded concept of social reproduction to capture its historical evolution, using Greece as a case study. Our empirical analysis of austerity measures on employment and pensions demonstrates, how, in the Greek case, a crisis of social reproduction of the traditional form of familistic welfare capitalism was already underway prior to the well-known sovereign-debt crisis. And further we show how the adoption of austerity measures and pro-market reforms is deepening this crisis by severely undermining the key pillars of familial welfare security while rapidly transforming the model into a political economy of generalised insecurity.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to link up and think through two bodies of literature, namely the critique of predatory publishing practices and the critique of political economy of established publishers, while introducing a reflection on the dynamic asymmetries of geopolitics and economics of globalizing knowledge production. Design/methodology/approach The authors deploy a conceptual approach developed with reference to a case study in order to explore the embedded logic of the current system of academic publishing. Findings The analysis shows that rather than examining two seemingly different issues (predatory publishing vs established publishers) as conflictual dualism, it is more productive to conceive them in associative and mutually constitutive fashion. Research limitations/implications A nuanced and multidimensional research approach is needed if we are to understand the dynamics of contemporary academic landscape. Originality/value The originality of the contribution lies in its problematizing of three established approaches that feature debates on the transformation of the academy. It moves beyond a micro-level explanation by (the lack of) individual morality as well as a structural explanatory framework preoccupied with publishing infrastructure and culturalist approach based on ready-made dichotomies of west/north vs south/east. Instead, the analysis provides an account that engages both with morality and geopolitics whilst tackling them as dynamic processes in making.

This study aims to perform evaluation using End User Computing Satisfaction theory on Seller Account Banyuwangi Mall. The approach used in this research is qualitative explorative approach with case study method from SME seller of goods product. The data collection procedure used in this research is interview, observation, and documentation. The result of this research based on evaluation of Banyuwangi Mall e-commerce system shows have satisfaction as end user. The current system is adequate, but needs to be improved. Such improvements are used to improve the efficient use of the Banyuwangi Mall ecommerce system, especially the seller account system operated by SME actors who sell their products through Banyuwangi Mall. The improvement is a redesign of the sales system. The designs made have been adjusted based on the necessary improvements taking into consideration the costs and benefits, as well as the internal controls in each of their activities, so that the design proposal on the Banyuwangi Mall seller account is well worth considering. Further research is expected to be an evaluation and improvement of the appearance of the customer or buyer to make buyers more interested in transactions through Banyuwangi Mall and simplify the use.
