An ultrathin wearing course is an effective maintenance treatment for prolonging the service life of asphalt pavements, which have been widely used in the field of pavement construction and road maintenance. However, the repeated vehicle load and wear results in a decreased durability of ultrathin wear course cover pavement. Hence, the gradation of ultrathin wear course was designed using calcined bauxite in this study, and the water stability, low-temperature properties, resistance to permanent deformation, and salt erosion were investigated through a laboratory test. Results indicated that the addition of a nonammonia antistripping agent significantly improves the water stability of the asphalt mixture with calcined bauxite and its ability to resist salt erosion as well as improve its low-temperature deformation ability. At the same time, polyphosphoric acid improves the adhesion between asphalt and calcined bauxite aggregate and the high-temperature performance of asphalt mixture but has limited improvement in water stability and resistance to salt erosion. This research is conducive to the widespread use of calcined bauxite aggregates in road pavements and is of great significance for improving the durability of ultrathin wear course asphalt pavements.

The use of recycled tire rubber in asphalt pavements to improve the overall performance, economy, and sustainability of pavements has gained considerable attention over the last few decades. Several studies have indicated that recycled tire rubber can reduce the permanent deformation of flexible pavements and enhance its resistance to rutting, reduce pavement construction and maintenance costs, and improve the resistance to fatigue damage. This paper provides a systematic and critical overview of the research on and practice of using recycled tire rubber in asphalt pavements in terms of engineering properties, performance, and durability assessment. This critical analysis of the state-of-the-art should enhance the understanding of using recycled tire rubber in asphalt pavements, define pertinent recommendations, identify knowledge gaps, and highlight the need for concerted future research.

The paper investigates the effects of different concentrations of crumb rubber (CR) on the pavement performance of the conventional penetration-grade 80/100 bitumen and the dense-graded wearing course asphalt mixture (AC16). A wet process and 0.6mm size CR were used and the control variables included three types of CR of concentrations 5%,10% and 15% by total weight of binder. The evaluations were twofold. Firstly, a comparison of the basic and rheological properties of those modified and unmodified binders was conducted. Secondly, a comparison of the resistance to moisture damage, low temperature cracking and permanent deformation of the AC16 and CR modified AC16 was performed. The results show that all the CR modified binders and mixtures are found to have improved performance as evaluated by a series of laboratory tests. In addition, among three CR concentrations, AC16 modified with 10%CR by total weight of binder exhibits the most satisfactory performance properties with respect to the resistance to moisture damage, permanent deformation and low temperature cracking.

The effect of sasobit’s quantity exerted on the asphalt viscosity was researched firstly in this paper, and the mixing temperature of warm mix recycled Asphalt mixture was determined. Then, the technical performances of warm mix recycled asphalt mixture on high temperature, low temperature and water stability were studied through systematic experiments. And compared the technical indexes with that of hot mix asphalt. The results showed that sasobit could reduce asphalt viscosity significantly, so it could lower the mixing and compaction temperatures of the recycled asphalt mixture. The technical indexes of warm mix recycled asphalt mixture conform to the current specifications, so it can be used in many pavement structures.

To reduce the temperature of asphalt pavements in summer and improve their high-temperature stability, tourmaline anion powder (TAP) was used as a modifier to prepare modified asphalt, which actively cools the pavement. The effects of different TAP contents on the high- and low-temperature performance of modified asphalt and its pavement cooling performance were studied based on the dynamic shear rheometer, low-temperature bending beam rheometer, and indoor rutting plate temperature difference tests; subsequently, the optimum TAP content was determined. Modified asphalt was used to prepare an active cooling antirutting asphalt mixture, and its pavement cooling performance was verified via outdoor lighting tests. High- and low-temperature dynamic modulus and low-temperature semicircular splitting tests were used to evaluate the high- and low-temperature performance; further, freeze-thaw splitting and immersion Marshall tests were performed to evaluate the water stability of the active cooling antirutting asphalt mixture. The results denote that TAP is useful for improving the rutting factor of asphalt. When the TAP content is 16% of the asphalt material, the maximum cooling value of the surface in laboratory tests becomes 5.9°C. When compared with an ordinary asphalt mixture, the dynamic stability of the active cooling antirutting asphalt mixture at medium and high temperatures increased by 18%–22%. The fracture energy can be increased by 12% at low temperatures. The maximum cooling value of the surfaces in outdoor tests is 7.2°C, and the water stability slightly decreases; however, it still satisfies the specification requirements.

To research the grading applicability of Lucobit modifier and make it adapt to China's basic national conditions very well, the gradations of SUP-20 was selected to research mix design and pavement performance in the text. First, the mix design of SUP-20 without Lucobit is researched. Then the performance of SUP-20 is verified including the high temperature, low temperature and water stability performance of common asphalt mixture. At last the performance comparison between SUP-20 asphalt mixture with 7% Lucobit and without is carried out. Results show that the performance of SUP-20 asphalt mixture with 7% Lucobit and without can all meet the requirement. Compared with the performance of SUP-20 asphalt mixture without Lucobit, the low temperature and water stability performance with Lucobit have a little improvement and the high temperature performance improves a lot. So Lucobit modifier can greatly improve the high temperature performance of SUP-20 asphalt mixture.

This article studies the low-temperature anti-cracking properties of plain asphalt mixtures and rubber-modified asphalt mixtures at different aging condition. Laboratory flexural test was conducted on the beam specimens of plain asphalt mixtures and rubber-modified asphalt mixtures. Experiment results indicate that rubber-modified asphalt mixtures have superior low-temperature anti-cracking performance than that of plain asphalt mixtures. Compared with the short term oven aging test, the long term oven aging test has more significant effect on the low-temperature anti-cracking of the mixture. In order to better represent the low-temperature anti-cracking of in-service aging asphalt pavement, the long term oven aging test should be used to appraise the low-temperature anti-cracking of asphalt pavements in china.
