Since the advent of Bitcoin, the cryptocurrency market has become an important financial market. However, due to the existence of the cryptocurrency bubble, investors face more difficulties in risk portfolios. We adopt wavelet packet decomposition, nonlinear Granger causality test, risk spillover network, and STVAR model; retain the mature research of multiscale systemic risk based on time and frequency; and thus extend systemic risk to different regimes. We found that when frequency is combined with regimes, the risk spillover center will undergo subversive changes in the long run. We also proposed that BTC will be more robust at extreme values (like longest and shortest periods), while cryptocurrencies with smaller market capitalization will be stronger in the medium term. At the same time, the recession period will also spur on it.

PurposeThe paper examined the relationship between financial development and economic growth for the period 1996 to 2018 in Eswatini.Design/methodology/approachThe Autoregressive Distributed Lag bounds test (ARDL) was employed to determine the long-run and short-run dynamics of the link between the variables of interest. The Granger causality test was also performed to establish the direction of causality between financial development and economic growth.FindingsThe ARDL results revealed that there is a long-run relationship between financial development and economic growth. The Granger causality test revealed bidirectional causality between money supply and economic growth, and unidirectional causality running from economic growth to financial development. The results highlight that economic growth exerts a positive and significant influence on financial development, validating the demand following hypothesis in Eswatini.Practical implicationsPolicymakers should formulate policies that aims to engineer more economic growth. The policies should strike a balance between deploying funds necessary to stimulate investment and enhancing productivity in order to enliven economic growth in Eswatini.Originality/valueThe study investigates the finance-growth linkage using time series analysis. It determines the long-run and short-run dynamics of this relationship and examines the Granger causality outcomes.

In this paper, we tested the Wagner’s Law against the Keynesian Hypothesis for Indonesia using granger causality test. After conducting theoretical and empirical theory, this paper is analysing the relationship between government expenditure and GDP percapita. The long run parameters and causality test found valid Wagners’ Law in Indonesia not Keynesian Hypothesis. The results reveal a positive and statistically significant long run effect running from economic growth toward the government expenditure refer to Wagner’s Law in Indonesia. Further more, the growth of population is giving a positive effect for government expenditure also.

Pakistan’s agricultural sector growth is dwindling from the last several years due to insufficient foreign direct investment (FDI) and a drastic climate change-induced raise in temperature, which are severely affecting agricultural production. The FDI has paramount importance for the economy of developing countries as well as the improvement of agricultural production. Based on the time series data from 1984 to 2017, this paper aims to highlight the present situation of the agriculture sector of Pakistan and empirically analyze the short-run and long-run impact of Chinese foreign direct investment (CFDI), climate change, and CO2 emissions on agricultural productivity and causality among the variables. The Autoregressive Distributed Lag Model (ARDL) model and Granger Causality test were employed to find out the long-run, short-run, and causal relationships among the variables of interest. Furthermore, we have employed the Error Correction Model (ECM) to know the convergence of the equilibrium path. The bound test results verified the existence of a long-run association, and the empirical findings confirmed that Chinese FDI has a significant and positive impact, while climate change and CO2 emissions has negative impact on the agricultural growth of Pakistan both in the short-run and long-run. Granger Causality test results revealed that variables of interest exhibit bi-directional and uni-directional causality. The sector-wise flow of FDI reveals that the agriculture sector of Pakistan has comparatively received a less amount of FDI than other sectors of the economy. Based on the findings, it was suggested to the Government of Pakistan and policymakers to induce more FDI in the agriculture sector. Such policies would be helpful for the progress of the agriculture sector as well as for the economic growth of Pakistan.

The main objective of this study is to develop first time trade openness index and use this index to examine the link between trade openness and economic growth in case of India. This study employs a new endogenous growth model for theoretical support, auto-regressive distributive lag model and rolling window regression method in order to determine long run and short run association between trade openness and economic growth. Further granger causality test is used to determine the long run and short run causal direction. The results reveal that human capital and physical capital are positively related to economic growth in the long run. On the other hand, trade openness index negatively impacts on economic growth in the long run. The new evidence is provided by the rolling window regression results i.e. the impact of trade openness index on economic growth is not stable throughout the sample. In the short run trade openness index is positively related to economic growth. The result of granger causality test confirms the validity of trade openness-led growth and human capital-led growth hypothesis in the short run and long run.

This article empirically re-examines the export-led growth hypothesis in the context of Bangladesh using the quarterly data from 1973:1 to 2005:4. The standard time series econometric techniques, such as cointegration and Granger causality tests within the error correction modelling (ECM) are used for this purpose. The results from cointegration analysis suggest that there is stable long-run relationship between exports and income and the results from Granger causality test based on the ECM shows unidirectional causal relationship between exports and income. Thus, these results validate the country's export expansion programs to achieve long-run income growth.

Abstract This paper investigates the role of forests in the life expectancy of people in Ghana. We test whether the extinction of forests will inevitably lead to extinction of people in Ghana. We first examined the causal relationship between life expectancy and deforestation using the full sample bootstrap Granger causality test approach and find causality to run from deforestation to life expectancy with no feedback from life expectancy to deforestation. Testing for parameter stability, we found the short run and long run parameters of the estimated Vector Auto Regressive models to be unstable. A time-varying approach, the rolling window bootstrapped Granger causality test was then employed to investigate the causal relationship between life expectancy and deforestation. The results showed that deforestation has a negative effect on life expectancy, confirming the widely accepted saying that the health of forests is inextricably linked to the health of mankind. The empirical results further show that, on trend higher life expectancy increases the rate of deforestation in Ghana. Highlighting the importance of the role of forests in influencing life expectancy in Ghana, we recommend awareness creation on the role of forests in supporting human life and also extensive afforestation programs to reduce the rate of deforestation in Ghana. This, we believe, will reduce the spread of vector borne diseases such as malaria and reduce the surge in respiratory diseases which shorten the life span of Ghanaians.JEL codesQ23, Q50, Q53, Q58, Q58

Zakat is intended to stimulate economic development, education, social, human resources empowerment, religion health, and insurance programs. The seven programs above are implemented by the Malaysian government to improve economic growth. The aim of the study is to examine the impact zakat on human development program in Malaysia using the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) bound testing approach. The analysis was carried out for the period from 1980–2009. The finding of the research reveals that zakat has a positive and significant influence on human development in five state in the short and long run. Zakat in Malaysia can be used as tool of fiscal policy that is decided in the states of Malaysia to stimulate human development and economic growth in the long run. Abstract This study primarily seeks to evaluate the influence of financial system stability on economic growth in Nigeria from 1986 to 2016. Employing the use of Principal Component Analysis (PCA), this study constructs a Financial System Stability Index (FSSI) as measurement for financial stability. The indicators used in building the index capture three sectors of the Nigerian Financial System (NFS). The three sectors cover the banking sector, the capital market, the external sector and include a fourth component representing financial depth. The resulting index serves as a single qualitative measure for evaluating the level of stability in a nation’s financial system and proves capable of warning of an eminent financial crisis. Employing the use of four macroeconomic indicators, the index is then regressed against the Nigerian economic growth rate with an aim of discovering the short-run and long-run dynamics existing between both variables. The granger causality test, Johansson Co-integration test and Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) are the estimation techniques employed in achieving the objectives of this research. The granger causality test revealed a uni-directional causality between financial stability and economic growth in Nigeria. The Johansson Co-integration test showed that long-run co-integration relationship exists between financial stability and economic growth. Finally, the VECM results find that financial stability displays a negative relationship with economic growth and bears no significant effect on economic growth in Nigeria. The findings disclose that financial stability in Nigeria may be high and has resulted in the underutilization of financial assets thus hampering sustainable economic growth in Nigeria. In conclusion, the outcome of the findings shows that while financial stability may be necessary for initiating economic growth, it is not sufficient for sustaining economic growth in Nigeria. This research work recommends that the FSSI be employed as an additional tool for measuring the condition/state of financial stability in Nigeria and in predicting the onset of a potential financial crisis. The study further recommends that financial authorities must give attention to other aspects of financial development to facilitate sustainable economic growth in Nigeria.

This research was a modification of research by Catalbas (2016) and Pratikto (2012). The model that can separate long-term and short-term components are the Vector Error Correction Model (VECM). This study aimed to model export, import, inflation, interest rates, and the rupiah exchange rate using VECM and to test the causality between variables using the Granger Causality test. The inter-variable model obtained in this study was VECM with lag 2 using a deterministic trend with the assumption of none intercept no trend and two cointegrations. In export and import, there was an adjustment mechanism from the short-term to the long-term. This research model was appropriate to forecast the export and import where VECM with export and import as the target variables, the cointegration equation (long-run model) for  cointegration equation (long-run model) for Based on the Granger Causality test, it was found that there was a one-way relationship between exchange rates and inflation, export and interest rates, export and import, inflation and export, and import and the interest rate at the significance level of 5%.

This study considered the impact of inflation on unemployment in Nigeria viz avis selected macroeconomic variables. The researcher adopted co integration, vector error correction model and VEC Granger causality test econometric procedure in the analysis of the data employed. The specific objectives of the study are; (i) to determine the extent to which inflation impact on unemployment in Nigeria within the period of study, (ii) to examine if government expenditure have any significant impact on unemployment in Nigeria within the period of study, (iii) to estimate the significant impact of foreign direct investment on unemployment in Nigeria within the period of study; (iv) to investigate the extent of direction of causality between unemployment and inflation in Nigeria within the period of study. The results of the research revealed long run relationship among estimated variables, VECM result showed a positive significant relationship between inflation and unemployment in the short run and long run, government expenditure and foreign direct investment maintained negative relationship with unemployment both in the short and long run. The VEC Granger causality test indicated causality among UNEM, INF and TGEX. The research recommended that (i) government should focus on policy and strategy that can attract foreign direct investment into the country, (ii) government should try to maintain low inflation rate through suitable monetary policy; (iii) government should encourage investment platforms and enabling environment for effective and efficient national output; and (iv) Government should consciously increase fiscal space for capital activities and projects that are capable of generating income, increase domestic and public spending, improve economic status and reduce unemployment. This paper concluded that the Philip’s curve hypothesis does not apply in Nigeria within the period of study as the result failed to establish an inverse relationship as postulated by A.W. Philips.
