There is a general acknowledgement in almost all civilizations that the heart is the most important organ in the human body. Both Chinese medicine and Western traditional medicine have a long history of heart research, but they have developed different points of view based on the basic cognition. Traditional Chinese medicine is good at summarizing the correspondence and relationship between the heart and exterior things. The physiological functions of the heart are governing blood and vessels, controlling the mind, opening into the tongue, manifesting on the face, and so on, while modern Western medicine does well in exploring the anatomical structure, spacial connection, and micromechanical character of the organ. Chinese medicine and Western medicine have established the diagnosis and management system, respectively, from their own angles. Combining the knowledge of Chinese and Western medicine can take the advantages of either of the two, making it deeper and more comprehensive for studying and treating heart diseases.

Background: In Persian medicine (PM) and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), there is an ignored space, namely the Meraque/San Jiao (M/S) space, which in our previous article has been described in detail. Recently, there has been a publication about the mesentery system describing it as a new system with a history of no more than 300 years. According to our previous publications, this is a part of the M/S system, which could represent adipose tissue and vessels. The mesentery and the M/S system can be regarded as one system, except that the mesentery system is a section of the integrated system of M/S with a history of more than 3,000 years; this is the main topic of this report. Key Message: Comparing the mesentery with the Meraque in PM and the San Jiao in TCM, we can conclude that the M/S is more complete than the mesentery. Based on ancient classical texts of PM, the Meraque system has 6 labyrinths and includes all membranes, the fascia, vessels, adipose tissue, and the gut. In PM and TCM, it has a very important role. We will attempt to modernize the M/S. This leads to new methods in treatment, management, and research of Western medicine.

Western medicine is routinely used in developed nations as well as in Eastern countries, where traditional medicine is frequently used by a selection of patients or family member as a complement to mainstream Western medicine. Chinese medicine plays an important role in the treatment of chronic diseases, especially when Western medicine is not very effective. Many published reports have shown that Chinese medicine could also be successfully used in the management of acute and critical illnesses. Chinese medicine has a holistic view of the human body, and emphasizes individualization based on body balance and mind–body interaction and employs herbal medicines and acupuncture. This review paper gives a brief overview of Chinese medicine theory and therapeutic modality and then addresses the application of Chinese medicine in the treatment of acute and critical medical conditions, including epidemics. Using this ancient therapy as a complementary medicine, the management of serious medical conditions, such as SARS, acute heart diseases, and ischemic cerebral stroke, are presented. In order to promote more widespread application of Chinese medicine, well-designed controlled clinical trials are urgently needed to prove its safety and effectiveness.

In ancient Japan, written characters and religions were largely based on Chinese cultures. The first foreign physician was invited from Korea to Japan during the Shiragi Dynasty, when an Emperor became ill at the beginning of the 5th century. Since then, Chinese medicine dominated in Japan until Western medicine was introduced in the middle of the 19th century.

An objective and comprehensive analysis of the course, results, significance and prospects of studying the history of liberal parties and their departments in Belarus at the beginning of the 20th century was carried out. When determining periods in the development of historiography of the study of political parties, pre-revolutionary, Soviet, and modern (or newest) historiography is distinguished. It is concluded that Russian and Belarusian historiography thoroughly, from different conceptual and methodological positions, studied the liberal movement of the early 20th century, noting almost all possible points of view on its role and place in the country’s social and political life. Further prospects for a scientific search on this issue lie on different planes: the identification and study of those factors of the socio-political development of Belarus that made impossible a historical compromise between the authorities and liberals; a more detailed study of political biographies and belief systems of representatives of the liberal movement, not only leaders, which has already been partially done, but also “simple” participants, as well as factors that influenced their worldview; a detailed study of the sociocultural environment in Belarus, in which liberal values were formed. The methodological apparatus of historical research requires updating: the use of macro- and micro-approaches of the new social history, psychohistory, semiotics; research problems must be solved by means borrowed from different fields of knowledge.

As a common clinical disease, insomnia was usually treated with anti-psychotic or sedative-hypnotic drugs in Western medicine, which showed a fast efficacy, as well as easy drug tolerance and side effects. In traditional Chinese medicine, the basic and key pathogenesis of insomnia are believed to be “the restlessness of the mind”, as well as “the absence of the mind”; and the treatment mainly focus on “regulating mental activities and smoothing the liver”. By combining the theoretical basis and characteristics of Fang’s scalp acupuncture, this paper aims to explain the advantages of Fang’s scalp acupuncture in the treatment of insomnia, and provide new ideas and methods for its clinical treatment.

When in 1691 Leguat sighted the island of Rodriguez his eyes fell on mountains “richly spread with great and tall trees,” over which flowed streams with hanks “adorned with forests,” and altogether the scene was such as to call forth from him the designations of “a lovely isle,” “an earthly paradise,” “a little Eden.” He speaks of it thus (New Voyage to the East Indies, p. 248) :─“ ’Tis, as I have hinted, composed of lovely hills, covered all with fine trees, whose perpetual verdure is “entirely charming;” and “between these great and tall trees one may walk at “ease and find such refreshing coolness in their shade at noon, so sweet, so healthy, “that ’twould give life to those that are dying. Their spreading and tufty tops, “which are almost all of an equal height, joyn together like so many canopys “and umbrellos, and jointly make a ceiling of an eternal verdure, supported by “natural pillars which raise and nourish them.”Such is his picture of the aspect of the vegetation of Rodriguez. Is such its character now ? No. The great and tall trees have now almost entirely disappeared, the eternally verdant canopy formed by their houghs no longer exists, and the little Eden ”is now a dry and com paratively barren spot, clothed with a vegetation mainly of social weeds, and destitute of any forest growffh save in unfrequented and more inaccessible parts in the recesses of the valleys; and, we may ask, what has wrought this change ? We find in the history of the vegetation of Rodriguez a case similar to that of St. Helena. The same causes which destroyed the peculiar and most interesting Elora of that fertile island have operated, and I regret to say still operate, in Rodriguez, and have effectually changed the face of the island.

There is a close relationship between the liver and heart based on “zang-xiang theory,” “five-element theory,” and “five-zang/five-viscus/five-organ correlation theory” in the theoretical system of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Moreover, with the development of molecular biology, genetics, immunology, and others, the Modern Medicine indicates the existence of the essential interorgan communication between the liver and heart (the heart and liver). Anatomically and physiologically, the liver and heart are connected with each other primarily via “blood circulation.” Pathologically, liver diseases can affect the heart; for example, patients with end-stage liver disease (liver failure/cirrhosis) may develop into “cirrhotic cardiomyopathy,” and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) may promote the development of cardiovascular diseases via multiple molecular mechanisms. In contrast, heart diseases can affect the liver, heart failure may lead to cardiogenic hypoxic hepatitis and cardiac cirrhosis, and atrial fibrillation (AF) markedly alters the hepatic gene expression profile and induces AF-related hypercoagulation. The heart can also influence liver metabolism via certain nonsecretory cardiac gene-mediated multiple signals. Moreover, organokines are essential mediators of organ crosstalk, e.g., cardiomyokines link the heart to the liver, while hepatokines link the liver to the heart. Therefore, both TCM and Western Medicine, and both the basic research studies and the clinical practices, all indicate that there exist essential “heart-liver axes” and “liver-heart axes.” To investigate the organ interactions between the liver and heart (the heart and liver) will help us broaden and deepen our understanding of the pathogenesis of both liver and heart diseases, thus improving the strategies of prevention and treatment in the future.
