Cooperative communication systems, which make use of the intermediate relays between the transmitter and the receiver, have been employed as an effective technique to combat the channel fading and to enhance system performance. Cooperative systems have some drawbacks such as high latency and may diversity order not guaranteed. To alleviate the negative effects of these factors, the relay selection protocol is employed in cooperative communication systems to increase overall cooperative system performance. Relay selection in the cooperative systems enables the source to cooperate with the single relay node rather than multiple relay nodes which guaranteed the diversity order.

Cooperative system is a tendency in the future communications because it provides a spatial diversity to improve the system performance. This work considers the cooperative communication systems in Fixed DF Mode. The scenario includes multiple source stations, multiple relay stations and multiple destination stations. For the whole system, the maximum throughput approaching is the major purpose. Hence, to select the relay stations for signal transmission could be the important scheme to achieve the optimal system performance. With the exhaustive search method, easily to realize, the optimal selection scheme could be found with a highly complicated calculation. In order to reduce the computational complexity, a relay selection scheme is proposed. With different situations of the communication systems, the performances evaluations obtained with both the proposed algorithm and the exhaustive search method are given for comparison. It shows the proposed algorithm could provide a solution approaches to the optimal one. It could apply the proposed scheme to the practical without a delay because of long-time calculation.

Cooperative networks that use adjacent nodes to relay hearing data are employed as an effective technique to deal with channel fading, thereby enhancing the network performances. Next-hop and relay nodes selection schemes determine the optimal next-hop node toward the destination and relay node between the source and the optimal next-hop and/or destination. Offering joint next-hop and relay node selection in distributive multihop cooperative networks will enable the source to select the optimal next-hop node and relay node that can improve the system performance. In this paper, we propose a joint next-hop node and relay node selection (JNRS) protocol for wireless distributive multihop cooperative networks. The goal of JNRS is to reduce the spectral efficiency loss and outage probability. Analysis results show that JNRS can enhance the cooperative networks performance under general conditions compared to cooperative networks without the JNRS protocol.

Battery-operated medical implants—such as pacemakers or cardioverter-defibrillators—have already been widely used in practical telemedicine and telecare applications. However, no solution has yet been found to mitigate the effect of the fading that the in-body to off-body communication channel is subject to. In this paper, we reveal and assess the potential of cooperative diversity to combat fading—hence to improve system performance—in medical implant communication systems. In the particular cooperative communication scenario we consider, multiple cooperating receiver units are installed across the room accommodating the patient with a medical implant inside his/her body. Our investigations have shown that the application of cooperative diversity is a promising approach to enhance the performance of medical implant communication systems in various aspects such as implant lifetime and communication link reliability.

In wireless sensor networks, cooperative communication can combat the effects of channel fading by exploiting diversity gain achieved via cooperation communication among the relay nodes. A cooperative automatic retransmission request (ARQ) protocol based on two-relay node selection was proposed in this paper. A novel discrete time Markov chain model in order to analyze the throughput and energy efficiency was built, and system throughput and energy efficiency performance of proposed protocol and traditional ARQ protocol were studied based on such model. The numerical results reveal that the throughput and energy efficiency of the proposed protocol could perform better when compared with the traditional ARQ protocol.

In this paper, we study the outage and throughput performance for the simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) cooperative decode-and-forward (DF) communication systems. The hybrid receiver that uses both time switching (TS) and power splitting (PS) methods for energy harvesting (EH) and information decoding (ID), and the piece-wise linear EH model that captures the non-linear input-output characteristic of the EH circuit, are considered. We present exact analytical expressions of the outage probability (OP) and throughput, which are expressed as single definite integral on finite interval and can be easily evaluated, for the systems in Rayleigh fading channel. For further simplicity of calculation, we derive novel and closed-form approximate expressions of the OP and throughput. The impact of different system parameters on the system performance is investigated. Numerical results show the high accuracy of the proposed closed-form approximate expressions especially in the region of higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). It is also shown that the system performance is greatly overestimated when the ideal linear EH model is used instead of the practical non-linear EH model. A different result to the non-hybrid receiver with both linear EH model and non-linear EH model that there exists an optimal location to minimize the OP for the hybrid receiving relay node with non-linear EH model is also demonstrated.

In this work, we first assume that the relay node and the destination are connected by the error-free backbond. This scenario is often seen in the situation of handover in the uplink in 3G system, where the signals of a user is combined in either the base station or in the radio network controller . Under this assumption, the decoding metric is derived. Unlike, the decoding metric in this work is based on the joint probability of the received signal at the relay node and the destination rather than the conditional probability of received signal at the destination given the decoding information of the relay node. Based on this decoding metric, the information related to the relay node is calculated and then sent to the destination for fusion according to the derived decoding metric. Thus, the relay node does not need to actually decode the transmitted signal from the source. Therefore, contrast to the HDF protocol, the coding delay can be greatly reduced in this case.

The energy harvesting amplify-and-forward full-duplex relaying network over the dissimilar fading environments in imperfect CSI condition is investigated. In this system model, the energy, and information are transferred from the source to the relay nodes by the power splitting protocol with helping of the full-duplex relay node. Firstly, the outage probability, achievable throughput, and the optimal power splitting factor in terms of the analytical mathematical expressions were proposed, analyzed, and demonstrated. Furthermore, the system performance of the proposed model on the connection with all system parameters is rigorously studied. Finally, the numerical results demonstrated and convinced one that the analytical and the simulation results are matched well with each other for all system parameter values using Monte-Carlo simulation. The results show that the system performance degrades significantly but is still in a permissible interval while the channel estimation error increases and the system performance of the mixing scenarios is better in comparison with the Rayleigh-Rayleigh scenario.
