In many countries, particularly, third world countries. The common issue is saving energy. That`s why smart systems considered now primary for life requirements. This work aims to solve the energy saving problem. We prepared a street model that contains several lampposts on both sides of the street; we placed three IR sensors between the lampposts alongside the street. The IR sensors are connected to the controller (in this work we used Arduino UNO). The controller takes the signal from the IR sensor, and then it sends the command to the lamppost to turn on or off. Depending on the number of cars passed, (we took a sample of a number of cars that passed on an actual street) and through formulas we calculated the power consumed by the lampposts in two cases, the first case is when the lights is always on. The second case is when the smart system applied. We also applied fuzzy logic to the system to take the intensity of the ambient light (the sun light) under consideration. The results showed that the proposed smart lighting system is efficient and reliable in saving energy. The energy saved for both (smart and fuzzy) systems was enormous.

The idea of smart lighting has emerged over the years in commercial and industrial environments, with a focus on energy saving. With the advancement in technology, smart lighting can now offer opportunities in addition to energy saving to users in home environments for the provision of a comfortable atmosphere and the maintenance of user well-being. Currently, research in the smart lighting field is predominantly dedicated to energy saving in non-residential environments; meanwhile, the residential environments have not been explored. Therefore, a literature review was conducted to provide an overview of smart lighting systems’ effect on energy and well-being in the residential environment. Current research is mostly limited to designing and developing a smart lighting system in a controlled environment, with a limited evaluation of well-being and comfort. The review shows that residential smart lighting application possibilities and opportunities are not widely and thoroughly explored.

Energy-saving lamps are equipped with converters enabling high energy efficiency at the cost of injecting very distorted currents on the mains. The problem is more complex in the emerging smart-lighting scenario where these lamps are also used to perform additional tasks. Harmonics mitigation at the lamp level is expensive; consequently, an optimal lighting system design aiming at reducing both costs and current distortion of the whole lighting system is necessary. A tool able to emulate the current drawn from the lamps is necessary for optimal design. Such a tool has also to consider the fluctuations of the voltage on the mains that usually occur throughout the day. In this perspective, a parametric PSpice circuit is proposed and the netlist is reported in this work. Moreover, the simple procedure to be adopted for computing the parameters is also described. The validation has confirmed the ability of the proposed circuit in emulating the current drawn from various CFLs and LED lamps under different supplying voltage.

This study investigated the technological developments in the shale petroleum industry by analyzing patent data using a network of technological indices. The technological developments were promoted by the beginning of the shale industry, and after the first five years, it showed a more complex development pattern with the convergence of critical technologies. This paper described progress in the shale petroleum technologies as changes in relatedness networks of technological components. The relatedness represents degree of convergence between technological components, and betweenness centrality of network represents priority of technological components. In the results, the progress of the critical technologies such as directional drilling, increasing permeability, and smart systems, were actively carried out from 2012 to 2016. Especially, unconverged technology of increasing permeability and the converged technology of directional drilling and smart system has been intensively developed. Some technological components of the critical technologies are more significant in the form of converged technology.

Background: We published the world’s first case of hemi-laryngpharyngeal spasm (HELPS) syndrome cured by microvascular decompression (MVD) of the Xth cranial nerve in 2016. We now present a small cohort of patients (n=3) successfully treated with surgery in order to better delineate the common characteristics of this syndrome, diagnostic tests of choice, nuances of their surgical care and outcomes of their treatment. Methods: The history and physical examination of three patients with HELPS syndrome are presented. Pre-operative laryngoscopy, neuroimaging, response to botox and intra-operative videos are detailed. Post-operative outcome and complications are presented. Results: Each patient reported similar motor (choking) and sensory (coughing) features in their history. Episodic choking relentlessly progressed over the years until it occurred while sleeping and with frightening severity prompting tracheostomy in one patient and intubation in another. A “tickling” sensation deep in the throat triggered episodic coughing that worsened over the years until it occurred while sleeping and with frightening severity (syncope and incontinence). Conclusions: A review of the literature suggests that patients with similar symptoms, often called episodic laryngospasm in the past, have been treated with psychotherapy or antacids. With the recognition that a clearly defined subset of these patients have HELPS syndrome, we can offer them the potential of a neurosurgical cure.

Continuous ketamine infusion has been used successfully to treat severe refractory bronchospasm in children requiring mechanical ventilation in the intensive care setting. One of the common side effects known is emergence delirium. There is no standardized treatment for the ketamine-induced emergence delirium although benzodiazepine, haloperidol and dexmedetomidine have been reported to be effective in the past. A 7-year-old girl admitted to a tertiary hospital for life-threatening asthma requiring immediate intubation and ventilation. Ketamine was used as sedative and bronchodilator in anticipation of her challenging ventilation strategy. She was successfully extubated on day 8 of admission, however, she developed symptoms associated with the delirium. Successful reversal of the symptoms was achieved after 48-hour use of low dose intravenous midazolam. This was the first case reported on the reversal of ketamine-induced emergence phenomenon using low dose intravenous midazolam infusion.
