Common high-torque low-speed motor drive schemes combine an induction motor coupled to the load by a mechanical subsystem which consists of gears, belt/pulleys or camshafts. Consequently, these setups present an inherent drawback regarding to maintenance needs, high costs and overall system deficiency. Thus, the replacement of such a conventional drive with a properly designed low speed permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) directly coupled to the load, provides an attractive alternative. In this context, the paper deals with the design evaluation of a 5kW/50rpm radial flux PMSM with surface-mounted permanent magnets and inner rotor topology. Since the main goal is the minimization of the machine's total losses and therefore the maximization of its efficiency, the design is conducted by solving an optimization problem. For this purpose, the application of a new meta-heuristic optimization method called “<em>Grey Wolf Optimizer</em>” is studied. The effectiveness of the method in finding appropriate PMSM designs is then evaluated. The obtained results of the applied method reveal satisfactorily enhanced design solutions and performance when compared with those of other optimization techniques.

A permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) based on the principle of variable exciting magnetic reluctance (VMRPMSM) is presented. The motor is equipped with symmetrical non-magnetic conductors on both sides of the tangential magnetized permanent magnets (PMs). By placing the non-magnetic conductor (NMC), the magnetic reluctance in the exciting circuit is adjusted, and the flux weakening (FW) of the motor is realized. Hence, the NMC is studied comprehensively. On the basis of introducing the motor structure, the FW principle of this PMSM is described. The shape of the NMC is determined by analyzing and calculating the electromagnetic force (EF) acting on the PMs. We calculate the magnetic reluctance of the NMC and research on the effects of the NMC on electromagnetic force, d-axis and q-axis inductance and FW performance. The critical speeds from the test of the no-load back electromotive force (EMF) verify the correctness of the NMC design. The analysis is corresponding to the test result which lays the foundation of design for this kind of new PMSM.

When the permanent magnet synchronous motor is operated at a low speed. The rotor position and speed are very difficult to estimate using the extended flux or back EMF method. A novel modified current slope estimating method is used to estimate the rotor position and speed in low speed in this paper. The mathematical models of an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) are deduced. The basic principle of modified current slope method is introduced. The simulation control system is built based on Matlab and a TMS320LF2407 digital signal processor is used to execute the rotor position and speed estimation. The experimental and simulation results have shown that the rotor position and speed can be accurately estimated in a low-speed operating region.

The paper presents an algorithm and computer software for the optimization of electromagnetic devices. The mathematical model of the optimization method was presented. The modification of the classical grey wolf algorithm was developed. The modification consists in decreasing the coefficient responsible for the possibility of migration individuals in the permissible area of solved task. The optimization procedure was elaborated in the Borland Delphi environment. The optimization of the rotor of the line-start permanent magnet synchronous motor has been carried out. It has been pointed out that the grey wolf algorithm is effective method for optimization of electromagnetic devices.
