The pre-pressure device of the ultrasonic motor plays a vital role in the design of the entire motor structure, the contact state of the stator and rotor of the motor, dynamic properties of the stator, friction and wear characteristics of the rotor; even the mechanical behaviors of the entire electric machinery have a profound impact. Appropriate pre-pressure is conducive to the smooth operation of the ultrasonic motor, so that the output performance remains excellent, reducing wear and effectively extend the service life of the motor. Therefore, the research on pre-stress is of great significance, as it can better optimize the structure of the three-stator ultrasonic motor and lay the foundation for the stable operation of the motor. First, this paper introduces the construction of the motor as a whole and the pre-pressure device briefly described the working mechanism of the motor, and then introduces the influence of the pre-pressure on the stator and rotor contact models, the position of the constant velocity point, and the modal frequency. Finally, the motor output under different pre-pressures is discussed. The performance experiment has determined the optimal pre-pressure interval, which provides help for its subsequent optimization.

Molecular motors transform external energy input into directional motions and offer exquisite precision for nano-scale manipulations. In order to make full use of molecular motor capacities, their directional motions need to be transmitted and used for powering downstream molecular events – a current great challenge for molecular engineers. Here we present a macrocyclic molecular motor structure able to perform repetitive molecular threading of a flexible polyethylene glycol chain through the macrocycle. This mechanical threading event is actively powered by the motor motions and leads to a direct translation of the unidirectional motor rotation into an unidirectional translation motion (chain versus ring). The step by step mechanism of the active mechanical threading is elucidated and also the actual threading step is identified as a combined helix inversion and threading event. The here established molecular machine function resembles the crucial step of macroscopic weaving or sewing processes and therefore offers a first entry point for realizing a “molecular knitting” counterpart.

In this study we developed a brushless DC (BLDC) slotless motor with toroidal winding. The proposed toroidal winding is a method of winding a coil around a ring-type stator yoke in the circumferential direction. As there is no need for a slot or tooth structure, it can be designed with a slotless motor structure that is advantageous for vibration and noise. The basic principle of operation and motor characteristics of a slotless motor with toroidal winding were explained using an analytical method and finite element analysis (FEA). Further, the air gap flux density, winding factor, and back electromotive force (EMF) for changes in the winding angle and number of coil turns were calculated using the analytical method and compared with the FEA results. Finally, the resistance, back EMF, cogging torque, and performance of the prototype were measured and compared with the FEA results. The results show that the air gap flux density and winding factor were approximately the same with an error of <2%, while the back EMF had an error of ~10% from the analysis result. Thus, the proposed slotless motor provides a basic design for conveniently manufacturing brushless DC (BLDC) slotless motors with toroidal windings.

Magnetic levitation technology is expected to provide a solution for achieving nanometer-scale positioning accuracy. However, magnetic leakage limits the application of the magnetic levitation stage. To reduce magnetic density, motors should be installed at an appropriate distance from the table. This increases the axis interference between the horizontal thrust and the pitching, making it difficult to achieve stable levitation. In this study, a magnetic levitation stage system that has a unique motor structure fusing a gravity compensation function and pitching moment compensation is proposed. This compensation mechanism operates automatically using the passive magnetic circuit structure, ensuring that noises from the coil current and the timing gaps do not affect the driving characteristics and that neither wiring nor sensors are required. The basic characteristics were evaluated through the driving experiments, and the efficiency of the proposed gravity and pitching moment compensation system was demonstrated.

Transverse flux motors (TFMs) are being investigated to be used in vehicle traction applications due to their high torque density. In this paper, a two-phase axial-gap transverse flux motor is designed for an electric scooter, proposing a novel analytical design method. First, the dimensioning equations of the motor are obtained based on the vehicle requirements, and the stationary dq model is calculated. Then, the motor is optimized using a multiobjective genetic algorithm, and finally a 3D-FEM verification is made. Both the motor structure and the design method aim to have a low complexity, in order to favor the sizing and manufacturing processes through a low computation time and simple core shapes. This approach has not yet been explored in axial-gap TFMs.

In this paper, a sensorless rotor posture detection method based on the mutual inductance voltage of the stator coil is proposed to simplify the position detection element of a reluctance spherical motor. Firstly, the numerical relationship between the stator/rotor pole misalignment angle and the mutual inductance voltage of the stator coil is analyzed, which is used as the basis for judging the spatial position of the rotor. Secondly, an experimental platform is designed to verify the consistency between the calculated value and the experimental value of the mutual inductance voltage and to determine the appropriate excitation signal. Thirdly, based on the real-time voltages generated by the stator coil mutual inductance, an intelligent algorithm is used to invert the 3-DoF (degree-of-freedom) position angle of the spherical rotor combined with the motor structure constraints. The experimental results show that the detection method has a good on-line detection effect, and the population standard deviation is within 1.8° Therefore, the developed technique can be used for replacing the position detection method with sensors.

Constructing a micro-sized microfluidic motor always involves the problem of how to transfer the mechanical energy out of the motor. The paper presents several experiments with pot-like microfluidic rotational motor structures driven by two perpendicular sine and cosine vibrations with amplitudes around 10 μm in the frequency region from 200 Hz to 500 Hz. The extensive theoretical research based on the mathematical model of the liquid streaming in a pot-like structure was the base for the successful real-life laboratory application of a microfluidic rotational motor. The final microfluidic motor structure allowed transferring the rotational mechanical energy out of the motor with a central axis. The main practical challenge of the research was to find the proper balance between the torque, due to friction in the bearings and the motor’s maximal torque. The presented motor, with sizes 1 mm by 0.6 mm, reached the maximal rotational speed in both directions between −15 rad/s to +14 rad/s, with the estimated maximal torque of 0.1 pNm. The measured frequency characteristics of vibration amplitudes and phase angle between the directions of both vibrational amplitudes and rotational speed of the motor rotor against frequency of vibrations, allowed us to understand how to build the pot-like microfluidic rotational motor.

A permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) based on the principle of variable exciting magnetic reluctance (VMRPMSM) is presented. The motor is equipped with symmetrical non-magnetic conductors on both sides of the tangential magnetized permanent magnets (PMs). By placing the non-magnetic conductor (NMC), the magnetic reluctance in the exciting circuit is adjusted, and the flux weakening (FW) of the motor is realized. Hence, the NMC is studied comprehensively. On the basis of introducing the motor structure, the FW principle of this PMSM is described. The shape of the NMC is determined by analyzing and calculating the electromagnetic force (EF) acting on the PMs. We calculate the magnetic reluctance of the NMC and research on the effects of the NMC on electromagnetic force, d-axis and q-axis inductance and FW performance. The critical speeds from the test of the no-load back electromotive force (EMF) verify the correctness of the NMC design. The analysis is corresponding to the test result which lays the foundation of design for this kind of new PMSM.
