This paper proposes a sensorless control strategy based on Sliding Mode Observer (SMO) for a Five-phase Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (FIPMSM), with a consideration of the third harmonic component. Compared to conventional three-phase machines, the third harmonic of back electromotive force (back-EMF) contains more information. Thus, in this paper, the first and third harmonic components of the five-phase machine are considered to estimate the rotor position which is necessary for the vector control. Simulation results are shown to verify the feasibility and the robustness of the proposed sensorless control strategy.

In this study, we performed the electromagnetic and mechanical characteristic analyses of an 8-pole 12-slot interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM). Permanent magnet synchronous motors are classified into surface permanent magnet synchronous motor and interior permanent magnet synchronous motors according to the type of rotor. The IPM type is advantageous for high-speed operation because of the structure where the permanent magnet is embedded inside the rotor, and it has the advantage of having a high output density by generating not only the magnetic torque of the permanent magnet, but also the reluctance torque. However, such a motor has more vibration/noise sources than other types, owing to changes in reluctance. The sources of motor noise/vibration can be broadly classified into electromagnetic, mechanical, and aerodynamic sources. Electromagnetic noise sources are classified into electromagnetic excitation sources, torque pulsations, and unbalanced magnetic forces (UMFs). Vibration and noise cause machine malfunctions and affect the entire system. Therefore, it is important to analyze the electromagnetic vibration source. In this study, the electromagnetic characteristics of an IPMSM were analyzed through the finite element method to derive the UMF. Vibration and noise analyses were performed by electromagnetic–mechanical coupling analysis, and vibration and noise characteristics based on electromagnetic noise sources were analyzed.

The analytical model of a permanent magnet eddy current coupler (PMECC) is mainly used for evaluation of its characteristics and the initial optimization of design. Based on the equivalent magnetic circuit method, this paper carries out analytical modeling for four typical PMECCs composed of surface-mounted and interior permanent magnet, slotted and non-slotted conductor rotors, which provides a theoretical basis for the subsequent research in this paper. The basic electromagnetic characteristics of the PMECCs are investigated by the established analytical model. Simultaneously, the analytical results about permeance, flux density, torque and power are verified by FEA simulation. The analysis results show that the slotted CR will obtain a much higher power density, and the iron loss mainly exists in the CRs. In addition, the analytical and FEA results agree well, which proves the reliability of the proposed, nearly unified analytical model.

In this paper, a type interior permanent magnet synchronous motor designs is proposed for sport scooter application to improve constant torque wide speed performance. Interior Permanent Magnet machines are widely used in automotive applications for their wide-speed range operation and low maintenance cost. An existing permanent magnet motor (commercial QS Motor) is 3 kW-3000 rpm. In order to improve torque and power in wide speed range, a IPM electric motor 5.5 kW -5000 rpm can run up to 100 km/h: An Step-Skewing Interior Permanent Magnet motor alternatives is designed and optimized in detail with optimal magnetic segment V shape. The electromagnetic charateristics of Interior Permanent Magnet motors with V shape are compared with the reference Surface Permanent Magnet motor for the same geometry parameter requirements. Detailed loss and efficiency result is also analyzed at rate and maximum speeds. A prototype motor is manufactured, and initial experimental tests are performed. Detailed comparison between Finite Element Analysis and test data are also presented. It is shown that it is possible to have an optimized Interior Permanent Magnet motor for such high-speed traction application. This paper will figure out optimal angle of magnetic V shape for maximum torque and minimum torque ripple.

The optimal design of interior permanent magnet synchronous motors requires a long time because finite element analysis (FEA) is performed repeatedly. To solve this problem, many researchers have used artificial intelligence to construct a prediction model that can replace FEA. However, because the training data are generated by FEA, it takes a very long time to obtain a sufficient amount of data, making it impossible to train a large-scale prediction model. Here, we propose a method for generating a large amount of data from a small number of FEA results using machine learning. An automatic design system with a deep generative model and a convolutional neural network is then constructed. With its sufficient data, the proposed system can handle three topologies and three motor parameters in a wide range of current vector regions. The proposed system was applied to multi-objective optimization design, with the optimization completed in 13-15 seconds.

The matrix converter-based IPMSM drive has 360 Hz virtual DC-bus voltage variations which produce severe stator harmonic currents. To solve this problem, a speed-loop classical periodic controller and two current-loop periodic controllers, including a classical periodic controller and a selective harmonic controller, are proposed in this paper. By using the proposed methods, the harmonic currents are obviously reduced and the speed responses of the IPMSM are clearly improved. A detailed analysis is discussed. A digital signal processor, type SH7237, manufactured by Renesas Electronics Corporation is used for the control algorithms. Experimental results show that those proposed periodic controllers reduce up to nearly 32% of the total harmonic distortion at the stator currents, and also apparently improve the transient, tracking, and repetitive load disturbance speed responses.

<p><span lang="EN-US">Interior permanent magnet motors (IPMMs) have been increasing in popularity, since the emergence of permanent magnet material with high energy products, i.e. rare earth permanent magnet material. This paper analyses the performances of IPMMs having different rotor iron pole shapes including eccentric, sinusoidal and sinusoidal with 3th order harmonic injected rotor pole arc shapes IPMMs. Cogging torque, static torque, torque ripple, torque-speed and power-speed curves of the mentioned motors have been compared. It must be noted that the mentioned motors have been designed with the same stator, PM shape and the same dimensions, in order to highlight the effect of the rotor pole arc shape on the performance of the such motors. Two-dimensional (2D) finite element analysis (FEA) has been utilized to design and analyze the mentioned machines. It has been found that rotor iron pole shape of the IPM has notably influence on the machine performance, practically on output electromagnetic torque and its ripple. The highest value of average electromagnetic torque as well as torque capability in the constant torque reign is delivered by 3th order harmonic injected rotor pole arc shapes machine, while the lowest torque ripple is obtained by the sinusoidal rotor pole arc machine.</span></p>
