This work presents a novel method for detecting straight lines in an image at a very high speed with optimum number of processors and their functionalities. The method can be used to extract straight lines directly from an image without noise removal and pre-processing. First the square image is converted to a binary edge image using a parallel edge detection mechanism. The parallel edge detection mechanism used in this work is capable of producing edge image within a short time. Then the binary square image is transferred to a system having large number of Processing Elements (PEs). A PE has only limited jobs such as pixel scanning, compare line length with nearby PEs and transmit data to the Main Control Unit (MCU). The MCU collects data from all PEs and evaluates straight lines. Even if the number of PEs is high, it is comparatively very much less than the parallel Hough Transform method and practically implementable using recent ULSI technologies.

Vision-based measurement method can be widely used for a variety of real-time and online precision measurements, and particularly well suited for dynamic real-time precision measurement of geometry parameters of the part, which has advantages of non-contact, high-speed, big dynamic range, rich amount of information, and relatively low cost. After the study of vision-based online detection system of small gear, we propose a composite subpixel edge detection method, which combines the four-way weighted differential algorithm based on the classic Sobel operator and OFMM (Orthogonal Fourier-Mellin Moment), aiming at achieving the precision location of the subpixel edge firstly. And then detect tooth profile defects rapidly through scanning circularly the edge image, according to the structural characteristics of gears. The theoretical analysis and experimental results show that the detection method has so high accuracy and speed that it can meet the industrial online tests requirements.

A marginal clone algorithm is proposed in order to make edge detection of retinal vessels image have better edge continuity and less detection points. It is applied in edge detection of retinal vessels with a combination of edge connectivity and noise removal algorithm based on analyzing image edge cloning theory and algorithms. Simulation results show that the edge image detected by the algorithm has solved problems of traditional edge discontinuities and too much noise. Moreover, it has better edge recognition performance.

This paper presents a CMOS image sensor (CIS) with built-in lane detection computing circuits for automotive applications. We propose on-CIS processing with an edge detection mask used in the readout circuit of the conventional CIS structure for high-speed lane detection. Furthermore, the edge detection mask can detect the edges of slanting lanes to improve accuracy. A prototype of the proposed CIS was fabricated using a 110 nm CIS process. It has an image resolution of 160 (H) × 120 (V) and a frame rate of 113, and it occupies an area of 5900 μm × 5240 μm. A comparison of its lane detection accuracy with that of existing edge detection algorithms shows that it achieves an acceptable accuracy. Moreover, the total power consumption of the proposed CIS is 9.7 mW at pixel, analog, and digital supply voltages of 3.3, 3.3, and 1.5 V, respectively.

This paper describes the design of an intelligent multi-gyro measurement device to measure and monitor an inertial unit composed of three dynamically tuned gyros (DTGs). A 16-bit microprogrammed control unit is programmed to fulfill the functions of signal processing, logic control and serial communication with a master computer. An FPGA, designed by using Verilog Hardware Description Language, is used to realize high speed 16-bit reversible counters for output pulses of the DTG digital dynamic balance circuits. The count values represent the angular motion of the inertial unit. A stepping electric bridge is employed to measure the resistance of thermal resistors within the gyros in a wide temperature environment. The resistance represents the working temperature of the gyros. An effective calibration method for the bridge is developed to eliminate the resistance measurement error. A test system is established to examine whether the device meets the user requirements. Results of the tests show that the device has a good performance. A trial use has proved that the device is stable and reliable and that it satisfies the demand of the user.

The traditional Canny edge detection algorithm is analyzed in this paper. To overcome the difficulty of threshold selecting in Canny algorithm, an improved method based on Otsu algorithm and mathematical morphology is proposed to choose the threshold adaptively and simultaneously. This method applies the improved Canny operator and the image morphology separately to image edge detection, and then performs image fusion of the two results using the wavelet fusion technology to obtain the final edge-image. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has better anti-noise ability and effectively enhances the accuracy of image edge detection.

Metal vapor plume and spatters are the important phenomena in the process of high power disk laser welding, and there exists a close relationship with the welding stability. The images of metal vapor plume and spatters which captured by a high speed camera during high power disk laser welding were analyzed in this experiment. Image processing techniques such as median filtering, Wiener filtering, gray level threshold and lightness transform were used to process the images so that the image characteristic parameters such as the area and number of spatters in an image, the average gray, mean value, variance and entropy of a spatter gray level image and the coordinate ratio of the centriod of plume and the welding point can be extracted. To reflect the actual welding results obviously by those characteristic parameters, K-L transform method was used to get a new set of characteristic parameters. Experimental results showed that this new set of characteristic parameters could reflect the actual welding effectively.

Radar is the most eminent device in the prolonged scattering era The mechanisms involve using electromagnetic waves to take Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images for long reaching. The process of setting edges is one of the important processes used in many fields, including radar images, which assists in showing objects such as mobile vehicles, ships, aircraft, and meteorological and terrain forms. In order to accurately identify these objects, their edges must be detected. Many old-style methods are used to isolate the edges but they do not give good results in the determination process. Conservative methods use an operator to detect the edges, such as the Sobel operator which is used to perform edge detection where the edge does not appear well. The proposed method which combines Ridgelet transform, Bezier curve and Sobel operator is used to detect edges very efficiently. Ridghelet transform resolves the harms in the wavelet transform and it can well detect the edges in images. Bezier curve can profit gradual variation of the data and their mutability. Hence, the efficiency of the edged image is improved and, when used with Sobel operator, the quality of the edge image become very good. The data show that the advocated method has superior fallouts over the Sobel edge detection and the wavelet method in both subjective and impartial experiments. While the Peak Signal to Noise Ratio(PSNR) values were equal to 9.3812, 9.8918, 9.6521 and 9.0743using the Sobel operator method and to10.2564, 10.7927, 10.5612and 10.8633 using the wavelet method, they were increased in the proposed method to 12.6542, 12.9514, 12.8574 and 12.3013 respectively.
