AbstractThe purpose of the present study was to examine the relations between emotions, classroom environment, and willingness to communicate (WTC) using the advanced quantitative methodological procedure of doubly latent multilevel analysis. To this end, 1528 secondary school students from 65 different classrooms in Iran participated in the study. Results of the doubly latent multilevel analysis showed that a positive classroom environment is related to fostering WTC and enjoyment, while it reduces anxiety among students. Moreover, enjoyment was found as an important factor in increasing WTC at both student and classroom level, while anxiety reduced WTC only at the student level. Finally, the results of the study are discussed and pedagogical implications are provided for language teachers.

Reading aloud supports vocabulary build-up, provides basic background knowledge of the text and motivates learners’ interest in the text even among adolescents. This paper explores classroom experiences of Senior One students (12-13 years) with reading aloud of Soyinka’s (2007) play The Trials of Brother Jero. The findings show that both the teacher and the learners performed clear roles during the reading exercise and this seemed to create a systematic classroom environment for reading aloud. However data also indicates that although many of the learners declared to find value in reading aloud, some learners did not participate in the activity due to various reasons. The classroom context and the nature of the text also seemed to affect the way reading aloud was implemented during the lessons.

The aim of this study was to reveal secondary school students' ability of making transitions between text, picture, table and graphic representations related to the electricity. The research is a case study of the qualitative research methods. The working groups of the study were totally 100 students, including 50 from each of 6th, 7th and 8th students, studying at a secondary school in the 2012-2013 academic year. To determine the students' status of transitions in representations, a measurement tool relating to the subject of electricity was developed by researches. The measurement consists open-ended questions which questioned transitions representations (text, images, tables and graphics) with each other. Document analysis method was used in data analysis. In this context, determining specific criteria, established codes in accordance with the given answers by the students and the questions was evaluated in certain dimensions. Consequently, students were found to be inadequate to present transitions in representations in electricity. When the results are evaluated, it was suggested that during the teaching of electricity topic, teaching practices to draw attention to transition between different representations and in measurement-assessment processes, the questions reflecting the transition between different representations should be given; regulation the assessment questions in textbooks in this direction is recommended.

Literacy is an important result of language teaching. Language skills are like the pieces of a whole. The accurate acquisition of these skills, which are needed to be used effectively by individuals both in their social and educational life, is equally valuable. Writing is a skill that is acquired and developed mostly during the learning process among these skills. Writing requires not only recognizing the letters and language rules but also understanding and internalizing oneself and the environment. Therefore, emotions, opinions and experiences regarding this skill should be emphasized. The aim of this study is to review the relationship between secondary school students’ writing attitudes and anxieties, and writing dispositions. The study group of the study included secondary school students who were randomly selected in the center of Kars, Turkey in the 2019-2020 academic year. This research aims to examine the metaphors on the concepts of reading and listening of the secondary school students and is based on phenomenology. 390 randomly selected secondary school students participated in this study in the 2016–2017 academic year in Turkey. The study includes all the grades (5, 6, 7, & 8th) at the secondary school level. “Reading is like ..................., because .....................”, “Listening is like ..............., because ..................” were the two sentences given to the students and they were asked to fill in the blanks. The data were analyzed by the content analysis. The students created 385 metaphors about the concept of reading and 329 metaphors about the concept of listening. Metaphors on the concept of reading were divided into 11 categories: A source of knowledge/learning, development, necessity, imagination, life, finding peace, sincerity, boredom/suffocation, eternity, guidance, enjoyment. Metaphors on the concept of listening were divided into 9 categories: A source of knowledge/learning, necessity, imagination, life, finding peace, communication, boredom, guidance, enjoyment. In this research, metaphors were used to reveal the thoughts of secondary school students on the concepts of reading and listening.

The purpose of this study is to investigate writing tendencies of secondary school students with regards to different variables. Descriptive survey model was used in the study to find out students’ general writing tendencies. Writing Tendency Inventory which was adapted into Turkish by İşeri and Ünal (2010) and which has 21 items, was used in this study. The sampling of this study consists of 1145 secondary school students in 2013-2014 academic year. T-test and one-way variance analysis were used in the analysis of the collected data in this study. The findings of this study reveal that there has been a significant difference in students’ writing tendencies depending on their classes, gender, their state of keeping or not keeping a diary, the number of the books that they read in the former year, the reading group that they feel they belong to and the state of their liking or not liking to read. As a conclusion of the study, it can be suggested that secondary students’ writing tendencies (with regards to reliance, passion and continuity sub-dimensions) are higher at first years compared to other classes (especially at the 5th year) and they have more tendency to write. Besides, female students were found to have higher writing tendencies, and it can also be suggested that writing tendency is closely related to the number of read books, the state of keeping or not keeping a diary or the state of liking or not liking to read.
