There is no clear definition of what constitutes an ideal teacher educator, particularly from the perspective of Malaysian educators. Developing teacher educators’ vision of an ideal teacher ensures that teachers have high levels of professional, personal, and contextual dimensions in teaching practices, including competence in the practice of professional teaching, knowledge, and understanding. Therefore, the objective of this study was to find out the range of visions of what it is to be a good teacher educator in a Malaysian teacher education institution. Seventeen teacher educators from an established university in Malaysia participated in the study. A survey consisting of eight questions was used as the research instrument. The data obtained from the questionnaire were analysed by using descriptive and textual analysis techniques. The findings reveal certain criteria of an ideal teacher such as possessing sound subject matter knowledge, mastery of both generic and content-specific pedagogy, and hands-on teaching skills. The teacher educators shared that they have to adjust their goals to attain their vision, namely the need to adapt to the current policies, new ideas, and the ever-changing educational trends. The findings also show that an ideal teacher is the one who is responsible to nurture and bring about the best learning experience for students. This research has unfolded the teacher educators’ vision of the ideal teacher and pedagogical implications reflected in every facet of their educational practices.

Charisma is an inherent exceptional human authority, which consists of the ability to subdue others to one's will. Throughout the history of human civilization, charismatic individuals have played a significant role in all spheres of human activity ‒ politics, education, science, production, art, philosophy, religion, and so on. The article analyzes the current state of research on teacher's charisma. This phenomenon has long been known in education, but recently it has attracted more and more attention because it significantly increases learning performance. But research on teacher’s charisma is still rare, as its presence and variations are difficult to identify and operate on. The most important feature of a charismatic teacher is that in his professional activity, first of all, he tries to form and develop dynamic positive relationships with all his pupils, regardless of their abilities, gender, or social origin. Such a teacher becomes a role model, authority, and source of inspiration. Students of higher education institutions perceive the teacher's charisma somewhat differently. For them, the key features of an ideal teacher are professional competence and positive character traits. Not only does a competent teacher know his subject well, but he is also able to present it to students so that they understand the most difficult issues. Students consider friendliness, accessibility, patience, enthusiasm, self-discipline, and decency to be positive traits of an ideal teacher. Genetic studies of the teacher's charisma are completely absent. Although usual life experience shows that charisma is hereditary, its heritability remains unknown, which makes it impossible to determine how much charisma development depends on learning and upbringing. There are still no studies aimed at identifying genetic factors, not only charisma altogether but also the teacher's charisma in particular. The exacerbation of the problem of the education quality in today's rapidly changing world makes genetic research of pedagogical charisma very relevant.

Abstract: This article investigates teachers’ professional identity of beginning first-year students through their beliefs about being a teacher. The presented study focuses on Austrian teacher students’ (N=18) conceptions of becoming a professional; what convictions student teachers reflect on, which professional identity emerges and what synthesis of a professional teacher identity position can be portrayed at the beginning of teacher education. Through inductively driven content analysis all statements (N=401) have been combined, and a unified synthesis of a beginning student teachers’ professional identity was formed. Three main categories were found: the “ideal” teacher, “good” teaching, and the “optimal” working environment. The results showed a highly idealistic view of being a teacher. The majority of statements referred to teaching from a pupil-centered perspective by strongly emphasising personality traits, student-teacher relationships, and teachers’ professional knowledge. The study aims to explore the influence of languaging on novice English teachers’ motivation and to investigate the uniqueness of each English teacher’s reactions to motivational languaging activities (MLAs) from an Activity Theory (AT) perspective. Three novice English teachers at secondary schools in South Korea were interviewed using questions based on an AT framework, and they completed six sets of MLAs consisting of two parts: motivation and languaging. Our findings indicated that the two relatively motivated teachers could use MLAs to develop their ideal teacher identity and improve their teaching confidence. By participating in MLAs, a demotivated teacher can reshape her thoughts regarding teaching and motivate herself again. It has also been shown that MLAs can mediate participation in an imaginary teacher community, possibly leading to enhancement of L2 teacher motivation, but that this also might not occur depending on one’s teacher agency.

This study focuses on a series of videos aimed at teacher recruitment in Singapore and how they are used as an ideological tool for persuasion. By adopting a multimodal critical discourse analysis approach to focus on affect, it examines how these videos create and promulgate the ideology of an ideal teacher as one who is caring, encouraging and supportive of students. The analysis shows how affect is not only embodied in and performed by the primary protagonists in the video narratives through their action, facial expression, posture and speech. It is also evoked through various secondary meaning-making modes, such as focus, angle, lighting, background music and setting, through which the narratives unfold. More importantly, it demonstrates how affect is used not only as a means to arouse and engage viewers’ sensibilities but also as a persuasive strategy to manufacture and manage particular social and economic realities in contemporary society.
