Embora a teoria dos traços distintivos de Roman Jakobson esteja bem representada em seus trabalhos em inglês após sua imigração para os Estados Unidos, um quadro completo do desenvolvimento dessa teoria ainda está por ser feito, ainda que todos os seus trabalhos iniciais sobre o tópico, escritos em tcheco, francês e alemão já tenham sido bem examinados. Apesar de alguns desses trabalhos já terem sido vertidos para o inglês, pode haver diferenças enganosas entre os originais (escritos em outros idiomas) e essas traduções. Baseado na comparação entre as obras fonológicas de Jakobson publicadas no início dos anos de 1930 (“Z fonologie spisovné slovenštiny” e algumas entradas da enciclopédia Ottův) e suas versões presentes em seus Selected Writings, o presente artigo procura esclarecer alguns detalhes sobre a divisibilidade do fonema, a natureza paradigmática do traço distintivo e a nomenclatura e a classificação dos traços distintivos. Este estudo também procura oferecer um exemplo específico sobre como evitar anacronismos na pesquisa sobre história da linguística.

O presente trabalho busca aproximar, mediante dois paralelos, o pensamento teórico de Roman Jakobson exposto em “Poesia da gramática e gramática da poesia” e o estudo comparado de diferentes versões dos poemas em prosa de Raul Pompeia nas Canções sem metro. Pretende-se, assim, discutir conceitos importantes da teoria de Jakobson, como o de paralelismo e o de ficção linguística, com auxílio do texto literário, assim como, no caminho inverso, destacar pontos importantes da poética de Pompeia a partir da significativa reescrita dos poemas, por meio de mudanças lexicais, gramaticais e até mesmo de ponto de vista narrativo.

It is customary among western scholars who have written about the Carpatho-Rusyns to consider them “the most forgotten among the forgotten.”2 Little is known in the West about the political, economic, and cultural developments of Subcarpathian Rus', especially before 1918. Yet such an enormous amount of material has been written in eastern European languages about this territory that as early as 1931 the noted Slavic linguist Roman Jakobson could write: “In the whole east Slavic world, there is hardly any other marginal area whose past has been examined with such affectionate meticulousness and scholarliness as Carpatho-Russia.”3The present study is intended as an introductory guide to the voluminous historiography of Subcarpathian Rus'. The material has been arranged according to the following topical and chronological subdivisions: bibliographical aids; general historical studies; early history to 1514; 1514 to 1711; 1711 to 1848; 1848 to 1918; 1918 to 1938; October, 1938, to March, 1939; 1939 to 1944; 1945 to the present; cultural developments; Rusyns in Hungary; Rusyns in Jugoslavia; and Rusyns in the United States. Works will be discussed under the heading which most nearly describes the period dealt with in the text regardless of the date of publication. The time periods were not designated arbitrarily but are based on certain historical events the significance of which will be clarified in the appropriate subsection. Most studies treated in this article deal exclusively or primarily with Subcarpathian Rus' only a few are concerned with problems of a more general nature. Many studies dealing with the recent history of the area are not necessarily included because they represent sound historical research but because they are valuable, highly selective accounts of crucial events, many of them written by the participants themselves.

A director's ‘reading’ of the play – the hierarchical implications of which were discussed by Peter Holland in the preceding article – normally begins with just that: a reading, of the printed or typewritten text. Here. Michael Quinn discusses the various factors through which this initial acquaintance becomes a stage production carrying the stamp of the resulting perceptions – some of which go unrecognized, as much by the director as by those who evaluate his work. These may vary from preconceptions (or a lack of them) about the writer himself to the prevailing modes of the director's own work, or from such imponderables as the ‘lingering’ effect of objects on stage whose original function has been fulfilled to the ‘intertextuality’ always present when a play has a previous production history. The author argues not for the impossible elimination of such influences, but for their proper recognition, so that the director may be better aware of the reasons behind the choices he makes in translating a ‘reading’ into a production. Michael L. Quinn has previously published essays on Brecht and Roman Jakobson, and is currently serving as a play-reader for the San Francisco Magic Theater while preparing his doctoral dissertation on the theatre semiotics of the Prague school.

O presente artigo tem por objeto de análise a tela “Le sacrifice d’Isaac”, de Marc Chagall (1885-1987), que desde 1973 passou a pertencer à coleção permanente do Musée National Message Biblique Marc Chagall, em Nice, França. A questão a ser evocada, neste texto, é a ostensiva convocação estética da narrativa bíblica de Gênesis 22, 9-14 para o interior da referida tela. Parte-se da hipótese segundo a qual a tela em questão realiza um fenômeno da linguagem denominado por Roman Jakobson de tradução intersemiótica.

Propõe-se, neste artigo, ao se retomarem as relações entre Filosofia e Literatura, uma discussão sobre a tradução de poesia, levando-se em conta, principalmente, o pensamento de Walter Benjamin, Roman Jakobson, Ezra Pound, Jacques Derrida e Haroldo de Campos. Para além da discussão, o trabalho traz ainda recriações de epigramas latinos da autoria de Décimo Magno Ausônio, um poeta do séc. IV e.c., também ele recriador de outros poemas. Nessas recriações, realizadas a partir da edição crítica de Roger Green, experimenta-se o exercício de enfrentamento de poemas inçados de dificuldades e, portanto, mais abertos a recriações, conforme propõe Campos. Trata-se, pois, de uma forma de investimento criativo em um dos tipos do make it new poundiano, uma vez que as recriações lidam com aspectos do extratexto cuja tradução se mostrou esteticamente potente e produtiva não via transcriação, mas via recriação, reimaginação ou reinvenção.
