The CO2morrow art project seeks to join the forces of scientific and artistic enquiry to aid our understanding of the climate debate and how humans are affecting the atmosphere through pollution. The authors consider the combining of art with science an essential means to help science find a voice for its concerns and discoveries and for art to have more of an impact on our society and the world at large. The project has involved the fabrication of a large-scale sculpture—placed at two U.K. sites—that highlights the correspondence between carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and damage to historic buildings through erosion and adverse weather conditions. CO2morrow has laid the groundwork for a new initiative involving global data visualization and awareness of the climate crisis on a worldwide scale.

The technologies of geodetic works in monitoring of various structures can still be associated with a number of difficulties caused by the influence of different factors despite the studies of many authors on that theme. The article describes the high accuracy geodetic monitoring of the football stadiums "Rostov Arena" and "Kaliningrad" that took place in a short time frame and in adverse weather conditions. The article gives two geodetic monitoring methods such as creating serving network by side-points method and electronic block tacheometry. The technology and the adjustment of measurements made during monitoring are described in the article. The results show that the use of the side-points method and electronic block tacheometry ensures high accuracy measurements even in adverse conditions for observations. Practical conclusions and recommendations are set out. The article may be useful for specialists in the field of monitoring and geodetic control of deformations of structures.

Coffee is one of the most popular and demanded drinks throughout the world; its consumption goes from the ceremonial to the casual, therefore, the plantations destined for its production are valuable. Besides, the coffee tree is perennial, which guarantees leaves supply throughout the year. Additionally to flowers, coffee leaves have been little studied and commercialized, although they represent an important source of phytochemicals. In flowers, different volatile compounds have been detected; while in leaves, bioactive compounds such as chlorogenic acid and mangiferin have been reported as major phenolics. Both compounds are recognized with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-obesity and anti-carcinogenic effects. These phytochemicals are produced by the plant as a defense mechanism against biotic or abiotic stresses such as pathogens or adverse weather conditions. This review describes the non-conventional applications that aerial parts of the coffee tree could have as therapeutic or agronomic agents, in addition to the uses that have traditionally been linked to the Coffea plant.

Shared mobility-on-demand services are expanding rapidly in cities around the world. As a prominent example, app-based ridesourcing is becoming an integral part of many urban transportation ecosystems. Despite the centrality, limited public availability of detailed temporal and spatial data on ridesourcing trips has limited research on how new services interact with traditional mobility options and how they affect travel in cities. Improving data-sharing agreements are opening unprecedented opportunities for research in this area. This study examined emerging patterns of mobility using recently released City of Chicago public ridesourcing data. The detailed spatio-temporal ridesourcing data were matched with weather, transit, and taxi data to gain a deeper understanding of ridesourcing’s role in Chicago’s mobility system. The goal was to investigate the systematic variations in patronage of ridehailing. K-prototypes was utilized to detect user segments owing to its ability to accept mixed variable data types. An extension of the K-means algorithm, its output was a classification of the data into several clusters called prototypes. Six ridesourcing prototypes were identified and discussed based on significant differences in relation to adverse weather conditions, competition with alternative modes, location and timing of use, and tendency for ridesplitting. The paper discusses the implications of the identified clusters related to affordability, equity, and competition with transit.

It is a well-known fact that the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster caused the escort towing of laden tankers in many coastal areas of the world to become compulsory. In order to implement a new type of escort towing, specially designed to be employed in very adverse weather conditions, considerable changes in the hull form of escort tugs had to be made to improve their stability and performance. Since traditional winch and ropes technologies were only effective in calm waters, tugs had to be fitted with new devices. These improvements allowed the remodeled tugs to counterbalance the strong forces generated by the maneuvers in open waters. The aim of this paper is to perform a comprehensive literature review of the new high-performance automatic dynamic winches. Furthermore, a thorough analysis of the best available technologies regarding towline, essential to properly exploit the new winches, will be carried out. Through this review, the way in which the escort towing industry has faced this technological challenge is shown.
