Abstract From its beginning 500 years ago, Protestantism has been advocating and actively pursuing the expansion of schooling, including the schooling of girls. In many countries, it has thus helped to create a cultural heritage that puts a high value on education and schooling. This paper provides evidence that Protestantism’s historical legacy has an enduring effect. Using data on 147 countries, it finds that countries with larger Protestant population shares in 1900 had higher secondary school enrollment rates over 1975-2010, including among girls. The magnitude of the effect is small though. Using Protestant population shares over 1975-2010, the paper also shows that Protestantism’s influence on schooling has diminished and that contemporary Protestantism, in contrast to historical Protestantism, does not affect schooling. The regression analysis accounts for numerous other determinants of schooling.

Education has an important role in economic development, not only in driving economic growth but also in breaking intergenerational poverty. For this reason, the Government of Indonesia has implemented a 12-year compulsory education  program in the last decade. Through this program, it is hoped that school enrollment  rates will increase and economic development will be of higher quality. However, the implementation of this program was not without obstacles. This study aims to analyze the determinants of school participation in Riau Province in 2019 using data from the National Socio-Economic Survey (SUSENAS). The results of this study indicate that the education of the head of the household, the level of welfare and gender have a significant effect on school participation of children aged 7-18 years.

SummaryFactors affecting desired family size in rural Bangladesh are examined using data from contraceptive prevalence surveys conducted between 1983 and 1991. The analysis suggests that mothers having two sons and one daughter are more inclined to perceive their family as complete than those having three sons and no daughter. Logistic regression analysis indicates that important determinants of desire for more children are age of woman, current contraceptive use status, work status, and family planning worker's visit. The policy implications of these findings are discussed.

The calibration of a portable three-channel gamma-ray spectrometer for in situ analysis of thorium, uranium, and potassium is discussed. A method of regression analysis is suggested as the best means of including all of the data available from the calibration stations. Calibration indicates a nonlinear relation between count rates obtained in the field and concentrations in parts per million obtained from laboratory analysis. The range of radioelement content must be taken into consideration and appropriate sets of calibration constants applied. As an example of the method, calibration constants are calculated for a portable gamma-ray spectrometer using data for the Blind River uranium region of Ontario.

We explore whether the academic benefit from attending a preferred secondary school differs between beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries of the Jamaican Conditional Cash Transfer Program, Programme of Advancement through Health and Education (PATH). The academic outcomes assessed include end of secondary and post-secondary high-stakes examinations independently administered by the Caribbean Examinations Council. Among girls, receiving PATH benefits before secondary school enrollment does not influence the academic gains from attending a more selective school. However, boys who received PATH benefits prior to secondary school enrollment benefit significantly less from subsequently attending a more selective school with respect to comparable peers who did not receive PATH benefits. These results suggest negative dynamic interactions between PATH and selective secondary schools among boys.

This article presents an analysis of the global digital divide, based on data collected from 45 countries, including the ones belonging to the European Union, OECD, Brazil, Russia, India, and China (BRIC). The analysis shows that one factor can explain a large part of the variation in the seven ICT variables used to measure the digital development of countries. This measure is then used with additional variables, which are hypothesised as drivers of the divide for a regression analysis using data from 2015, 2013, and 2011, which reveals economic and educational imbalances between countries, along with some aspects of geography, as drivers of the digital divide. Contrary to the authors' expectations, the English language is not a driver.

Objective: The present study explored the relationship between organizational agility, innovative work behaviors, and job satisfaction in second-grade secondary school teachers in Ardebil City, Iran. Methods: This was a descriptive correlational study. The statistical population of this research was all secondary school teachers in Ardebil City, Iran, in the academic year of 2016-2017. Among them, 129 teachers were selected by cluster random sampling method. The research tools were the Organizational Agility Scale (Zhang et al., 2000), the Innovative Work Behavior Questionnaire (Holman et al., 2011), and the Job Satisfaction Scale (Berifield et al., 1951). Data analysis was performed using Pearson’s correlation coefficient and regression analysis method. Results: The obtained results indicated a significant positive correlation between organizational agility, innovative work behaviors, and teachers' job satisfaction. Furthermore, the results of regression analysis revealed that roughly 0.42% of the total variance of job satisfaction was predicted based on organizational agility and innovative work behaviors (P<0.001). Conclusion: The obtained results suggested that organizational agility and innovative work behaviors were related to the prevention of teachers' job satisfaction, which calls for the attention of authorities and educators to these variables.

The Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) epidemic was first detected in China in December 2019 and spread to other countries fast. Some studies have found that COVID-19 pandemic has had adverse mental health consequences. Individual differences such as personality could contribute to people’s behaviors during a pandemic. In the current study, we examine how personality traits of neuroticism and extroversion (using the Five-Factor Model as our framework) are related to the mental health of Canadians during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using data from an online survey with 1096 responses, this study performed multiple regression analysis to explore how personality traits of neuroticism and extroversion predict the effects of COVID-19 on the mental health of Canadians. The results showed that personality traits of neuroticism and extroversion are associated with the current mental health of Canadians during COVID-19 pandemic, with extroversion positively related to mental health and neuroticism negatively related to it. Results contribute to the management of individual responses to the COVID-19 pandemic and could help public health services provide personality-appropriate mental health services during this pandemic.

A considerable empirical research has been conducted on sexual exploitation of children and adolescents; however, limited information is available in developing countries. This study describes and discusses the prevalence, nature and characteristics of sexual exploitation of adolescents using data collected from 1116 secondary school students in Tanzania. Results indicate that 21 percent of the surveyed adolescent students had had at least one experience of sexual exploitation. Being a female, living in rural areas and being aged above 15 years were associated with high risk of sexual exploitation. This study underscores gender- and locality-specific social work interventional requirements, with emphasis on interdisciplinary collaborative efforts.

The paper analyses and discusses the perspectives of young people on World Cultural Heritage (WCH), focusing on their presumed reasons of its imbalanced global distribution. The qualitative study is based upon focus groups conducted with 43 secondary school students aged 14–17 years from Lower Saxony, Germany. The findings reveal Eurocentric thinking patterns. Furthermore, a site visit took place after the focus groups exploring the universal and personal values the participants attach to the WCH using hermeneutic photography. Due to these results and building upon an education for sustainable development that empowers learners to become sustainability citizens, the authors provide suggestions for a critical and reflexive World (Cultural) Heritage education.
