Sexual exploitation of adolescent students in Tanzania: Implication for social services

A considerable empirical research has been conducted on sexual exploitation of children and adolescents; however, limited information is available in developing countries. This study describes and discusses the prevalence, nature and characteristics of sexual exploitation of adolescents using data collected from 1116 secondary school students in Tanzania. Results indicate that 21 percent of the surveyed adolescent students had had at least one experience of sexual exploitation. Being a female, living in rural areas and being aged above 15 years were associated with high risk of sexual exploitation. This study underscores gender- and locality-specific social work interventional requirements, with emphasis on interdisciplinary collaborative efforts.

Sensory-Processing Sensitivity (SPS), as part of the general theory on Environmental Sensitivity (Pluess, 2015), is a temperamental individual difference variable, referring to sensitive perception and processing of as well as reflection upon environmental stimuli. For its measurement, Aron and Aron (1997) developed the Highly Sensitive Person Scale (HSP Scale) for application with adults. However, despite some adaption into German (Konrad & Herzberg, 2017) and a first English version for children (Pluess et al., 2018), no suitable measures of SPS for children exist in German. The presented two studies aimed at developing and validating a short, 10-item German version of the scale, which can be administered efficiently in educational field studies with German-speaking secondary school students. The factorial structure, its relationship with other personality traits (i.e., the Big Five; McCrae & Costa, 1990) and exploratory analyses on relationships with additional school-related variables were revealed using data from two independent student samples (N = 301 German academic-track secondary school students and N = 460 German vocational track secondary school students). Relations to existing research, practical implications for the educational context, and limitations of the studies are discussed.

Introduction : According to the Youth Behaviour Risk Factor Surveillance (YBRFSS, 2011) in Malaysia, the prevalence of smokers nationally among Form 1, 2 and 4 students government secondary school students was 9.1% (ever smokers) and 8.7% (current smokers). However, there is limited information on the prevalence of smoking among religious secondary school students and self-esteem as risk factor. Thus, this study was conducted to determine the prevalence and factors associated with smoking among the religious secondary school students in Petaling district, Selangor. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 899 students. The schools were selected using cluster sampling and self-administered questionnaire was used. Data was analyzed using chi-square test and multivariate logistic regression to identify the independent factors for smoking. Results: The response rate was 94%. The prevalence of ever smoking was 10.1%; 3.9% among female and 18.6% among male. The median age (interquartile range) of smoking initiation was 12.00 (4.01) years. The results showed that independent factors for smoking were: males (OR= 5.47); age group 14-15years (OR=2.82) and 16-17 years (OR=3.63) and having low self -esteem (OR=6.24). Conclusion: prevalence of ever smokers is higher when compared to YBRFSS, (2011) and it was revealed that most of the smokers started smoking even before secondary school. The results also revealed the importance of promoting self-esteem. Efforts in smoking prevention should therefore be focused on curbing the initiation of the acts and improving students’ self-worth.

Aim: A comparative study was conducted on how the use of social media affects the reading habit and academic performance of secondary school students. Study Design: The study adopted the descriptive survey research design to help elicit data from the target population through questionnaire, observations and interview instruments. Methodology: The questionnaires were randomly administered to both male and female students. Results: Social media is a great digital platform for learning and obtaining current information. There are consequences attached to the proper use and misuse among adolescent students. More than 50% of social media operators in secondary schools are users of Facebook. 58 out of 75 students who scored “A” grade in their favourite subject operated social media. 67.23% of the total respondents who use the social media didn’t score an “A” grade in their favourite subject. Students who operated more than one social media network scarcely scored an “A” grade. Only 3.5% of students spent up to 4 hours of reading every day. 46.5% read for 2-3 hours and 36.5% read for an hour. 11.5% read for 30munites while 2% read for less than 30 minutes. Conclusion: Students should be properly guided and given an adequate orientation before providing them with electronic devices like smart phones. Teachers should be encouraged to join large student groups. Off-topics and non-academic discussions should be curtailed.

<div><p><em>The present study aimed at the relationship between the socio-Economic Status and Academic Achievement among secondary school students of Prakasam District of Andhra Pradesh, India. A number of investigations conducted so far in the field of Socio Economic Status (SES) indicated a significant relation between achievement and SES.  After independence the SES of secondary school students in both urban and rural areas have registered a remarkable change.  On account of phenomenal advancement in science and technology the conditions of the people have changed a lot.</em></p><p><em>The data were collected from 200 secondary school students by using the tools socio-economic status tool measures the dimensions of educational, economic, social, cultural and occupational determinants.  The academic achievement tool consists of the test items of mathematics, general science and social studies.  Later the data were analyzed with the statistical procedures like mean, standard deviations, critical ratios, Chi-square test and r-values.  The results were discussed according to the significant values.  Based on the results certain conclusions were drawn. Over all observation of the study some educational implications were given.</em></p></div>

Background and objective: Sexually Transmitted Diseases are a major health problem that affects mostly young people. The aim of the study was to assess the effect of providing educational sessions about Sexually Transmitted Diseases on knowledge and attitude of secondary school students.Methods: A quasi-experimental research design was used in carrying out the study. The study was conducted at four governmental public secondary schools in Zagazig City, 367 secondary school students from the previously mentioned settings were included in the study. Two tools were used to collect necessary data: Tools (I): An interview questionnaire sheet; It was consisted of two parts: Part (A) entailed questions pertaining to socio demographic characteristics of the students, while part (B) included questions regarding student’s knowledge about sexually transmitted diseases. Tool (II): It was intended to assess student's attitude toward sexually transmitted diseases.Results: Pre, post and follow up students’ knowledge and attitude tests after sessions implementation revealed highly statistically significant improvement in students’ knowledge and attitudes (p < .001), which justified the research hypothesis.Conclusions: The educational sessions significantly brought out improvements in the knowledge and attitudes of adolescent students regarding sexually transmitted diseases. The study recommended an educational program about all types of sexually transmitted diseases to be included into the secondary school curriculum and media enlightenment campaigns about these diseases should also be emphasized.

Measuring human motivation requires understanding the outcomes individuals value and the strategies they prefer to employ to attain them. Knowledge of promotion and prevention, two pivotal motivation orientations, provide key information regarding these aspects. The Regulatory Focus Questionnaire, which measures these two independent constructs, was validated using data provided by university students and alumni of an elite U.S. university. Thus, little is known whether this instrument provides reliable and valid measures of promotion and prevention in a population of younger respondents from a different culture. To bridge this gap, the study employed data collected from three independent large samples of New Zealand secondary school students and used the jigsaw piecewise technique in combination with confirmatory factor analyses. Findings show that, in this population, items in the Regulatory Focus Questionnaire measure promotion and prevention as theoretically distinct constructs.

General wellbeing is often seen as a quality in education. This relationship of academic achievement and general well being is explored in this paper. A sample of 400 students of Haryana State is considered for this study. General Wellbeing scale developed by Kalia and Deswal (2011) was used. The data analysis showed that general well being has a significant positive correlation with academic achievement and accounted 11%role in predicting academic achievement of senior secondary school students.
