An Existential-Dialectical-Phenomenological Approach to Understanding Cultural Tilts: Implications for Multicultural Research and Practice

AbstractAn existential-dialectical-phenomenological approach is applied to the understanding of the universal tensions between multicultural and transcultural value-laden modalities of existence. Differences in cultural comportments are described as variations in local human ways in dealing with universal and bipolar existential modalities, values, or needs, such as freedom versus limitation, independence versus (inter)dependence, and connectedness versus separateness. Cultures are described as being organized around and as providing their members with ways of dealing with these value-laden dialectical dilemmas. Cultures are further depicted as legitimating one dialectical pole to the detriment of the other dialectical pole. Some cultures, for example, legitimate the dialectical poles of freedom, independence, and separateness, while deemphasizing or denying the dialectical poles of limitation, (inter)dependence, and connectedness. Other cultures legitimate the opposite. These one-sided value orientations of cultures are referred to as cultural tilts. The implications for the practice of multicultural counseling and phenomenologically-based qualitative research are delineated.

AbstractThis study suggests the findings of field research on communication made by a puppeteer of Wayang Golek Purwa, Asep Sunandar Sunarya. This study is categorized into qualitative research with a phenomenological approach. The result of the study shows that Asep Sunandar Sunarya has performed his communication competencies as a communicative puppeteer. Communication competencies owned by Asep Sunandar Sunarya to the audience is based on his experience which is called the concept of Mandala Wiwaha. The concept of Mandala Wiwaha is a concept of technique, insight, message and audience mastery. The concept of Mandala Wiwaha has made Asep Sunandar Sunarya a famous puppeteer who posses his own “popularity" compared to the other puppeteers. Through this concept Asep Sunandar Sunarya puts the audience as an important part every time he conducts his performance. Keywords: puppeteer, communication, Mandala Wiwaha.

This study aims to reveal the tradition of character education principles in Ma'had Darul Qur'an Hadith (MDQH) Al-Majidiyah As-Shafi'iyah Nahdlatul Wathan Pancor, Mataram, based on the principles in Ta'limul Mutaallim. This research is qualitative research that uses a phenomenological approach. Sampling was done by purposive and snowball sampling. To determine the sample purposively, the researcher interviewed several informants from the teaching staff. On the other hand, in snowball sampling, the researcher explores in-depth interviews based on the recommendations of previous informants to collect data from several other informants. Furthermore, data was also collected through observation by directly observing student learning and documenting attitudes recorded in school records such as student conditions and Ma'had's profile. The collected data is then analyzed into an immersive study using the Miles and Huberman model, where the data is analyzed interactively and persistently until it is complete and the data is saturated. The results of this study indicate that studying the Book of Ta'limul al-Muta'alim will make students (santri) of Ma'had Darul Qur'an Hadith have morals such as sincerity (ikhlās), contention (istiqāmah), and patience (ṣabr).

This article explains the other meaning of costs in the Traditional Ceremony that took place in the Ubud Village. The purpose of this article is actually to uncover the other side of the cost of the “Pelebon Ceremony” in the Puri Agung Ubud Family. The costs incurred for the implementation of the Pelebon Ceremony are very expensive because it uses many symbols, such as: Bade, Lebu, Tragtag, Banten, pigs and supported by thousands of Ubud people. This article includes qualitative research written using a phenomenological approach through interviews with several important informants. This article succeeded in identifying three other meanings of the costs incurred in the Pelebon Ceremony in Puri Agung Ubud, namely: the concept of Rna (debt), the identity of social strata and family gathering event.

In Israel, like the rest of Western society, women are still largely responsible for childcare and housework. In homeschooling families, this division is even more prominent. This article explores homeschooling mothers’ perspective on role division. Using the auto-ethnographic-phenomenological approach to qualitative research of individual perceptions and experiences, I recruited a purpose-focused sample of 27 homeschooling mothers. Using interviews and personal logs (or diaries), I obtained data that underwent thematic analysis. The study findings indicate that mothers like being with their kids and that most of them would not want to change places with their partner, but the question arises as to whether there is a real possibility of choosing.

This journal explains the results of cohesion and coherence analysis in the current new news discourse in Indonesia published by Republika, Thursday 16 May 2019. The research uses descriptive methods by describing and explaining the results of the analysis found in the study. This research is a type of qualitative research because the results tend to be released and descriptive. the technique used in this study is to take data, data collection is done in two ways, namely listening and taking notes. This study found the results of the use of cohesion and and the use of coherence. Cohesion is the integration between the parts that are characterized by the use of language elements. Cohesion is divided into two parts, lexical cohesion and grammatical cohesion. Grammatical cohesion includes conjunction, reference, release, substitution. Lexical cohesion includes antonyms, synonyms, repetitions, metonymy, and hypomini. Whereas, cohorence is the relationship between elements one with the other elements so that it has an integrated meaning.

The objectives of the research were to describe the types of speech acts used in televised political debates of governor candidates of North Sumatera, to derive the dominant type of speech acts used in televised political debates of governor candidates of North Sumatera and to elaborate the way of five governor candidates of North Sumatera use speech acts in televised political debates. This research was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative research. The findings show that there were only four types of speech acts used in televised political debates, Debat Pemilukada Sumatera Utara and Uji Publik Cagub dan Cawagub Sumatera Utara, they were assertives, directives, commissives and expressives. The dominant type of speech acts used in both televised political debates was assertives, with 82 utterances or 51.6% in Debat Pemilukada Sumatera Utara and 36 utterances or 41.37% in Uji Publik Cagub dan Cawagub Sumatera Utara. The way of governor candidates of North Sumatera used speech acts in televised political debates is in direct speech acts, they spoke straight to the point and clearly in order to make the other candidates and audiences understand their utterances.   Keywords: Governor Candidate; Political Debate; Speech Acts

AbstractThe authors analyze the changes in value patterns—patriarchy, authoritarianism and nationalism—in Serbia in the context of the social changes that have marked the postsocialist transformation period. They focus on the extent and intensity of two sub-patterns within each of these three basic value patterns: private and public patriarchy, general and specific authoritarianism, organic (natural) and ethnic nationalism. The conclusions about changes in these value patterns are drawn on the basis of three empirical studies conducted in 2003, 2012, and 2018. They show the prevalence of private patriarchy, general authoritarianism, and organic (natural) nationalism over their counterparts. Private patriarchy has weakened, which is largely to be explained by the significant structural changes in Serbia. On the other hand, support of general authoritarianism and organic (natural) nationalism has been on the rise, which clearly mirrors the unfavorable economic and political situation in the country.

It is a common assumption that children with disabilities are more likely to experience victimization than their peers without disabilities. However, there is a paucity of robust research supporting this assumption in the current literature. In response to this need, we conducted a logistic regression analysis using a national dataset of responses from 26,572 parents/caregivers to children with and without disabilities across all 50 states, plus the District of Columbia. The purpose of our study was to acquire a greater understanding of the odds of victimization among children with and without intellectual disability (ID), while controlling for several child and parent/adult demographic correlates. Most notably, our study revealed that children with ID have 2.84 times greater odds of experiencing victimization than children without disabilities, after adjusting for the other predictors in the model. Implications for future research and practice are discussed.

Gambus Paser music is one among traditional perfoming arts belongs to Paser tribe. Contextually, gambus Paser performing art cannot be detacted from its socio-culural since it geographically affects the characteristic of that cultural music. Generally, the culture of Gambus Paser music has its various values according to its various geographical dispositions. Geographically varied characteristic of Gambus Paser music is reflected on the interpretation of the music especially on the style of pentengan (picking technique) and the lyric of Gambus song. Gambus Paser music is also characteristically identified by the use of that pentengan style. On the other hand, coastal area also affects Gambus Paser characateristic which tends to be expressive and dynamic. Conceptually speaking, this research is qualitative research with descriptive analytical method. This research focuses on Gambus Paser performing art as the cultural (music) literacy enhancement. The purpose is to analyze the form of Gambus Paser performance as Paser cultural literacy. The result shows that literature related to Paser art is still hardly found, while on the other hand, we have also found how potential this performance as sustainable literacy and identity enhancement for Paser community to welcome the Indonesian capital relocation to East Borneo. A concrete step which is taken is to documenting and disseminating the Gambus Paser performance to create a cultural literacy and a sustainable traditional art.
