The emergence of social networks has joined people from different parts of the world which has brought unconditional benefit to humanity. At the same time, the possibility of communication between citizens of different countries using the same platforms, foreign hosting companies and providers has created a new form of human identity – virtual identity. In turn, this has contributed to a new phenomenon, such as digital socialization of the individual. This has created comfort and additional opportunities for integration into society, but at the same time, this form has led to the blurring of traditional values, national cultures and the fragmentation of political consciousness.

Scholars have long seen in Montaigne’s turn inward, toward a psychological and philosophical investigation of human identity a mark of the modernity of the Essays, but they have focused on a static conception of the self, without taking into account Montaigne’s emphasis on his decline. This article discusses the essayist’s pervasive references to his old age as a way to relate to oneself, the other, the world, and to his literary endeavor. The portrait of the writer as a man growing old is embedded in the systems of knowledge of the day, yet Montaigne’s pragmatic reflections on how to adjust to the damages of time on his physical and cognitive capacities still speak to us.

In his 2015 encyclical, Pope Francis argued that Christianity stands in need of an “ecological conversion.” Conversion is an urgent kind of theological language, urging a resilient and ecologically grounded faith, a faith that turns on the capacities necessary to inhabit God’s world well. Drawing on the eschatological tension described by Jürgen Moltmann as the “unquiet heart,” this essay builds a practical theology for nurturing Christian faith in our vulnerable and changing ecological context. Engaging generative questions from the fields of theological anthropology, educational theory, and practical theology, it reframes the work of human life as becoming good inhabitants in God’s household. As such, it reexamines the shape of human identity and vocation in relationship to the world and to God’s promised future. It concludes with modest proposals for practices and educational approaches that might cultivate what Larry Rasmussen has called an “earth-honoring faith.”

Fingerprints have been the gold standard for personal identification within the forensic community for more than one hundred years. It is still universal in spite of discovery of DNA fingerprint. The science of fingerprint identification has evolved over time from the early use of finger prints to mark business transactions in ancient Babylonia to their use today as core technology in biometric security devices and as scientific evidence in courts of law throughout the world. The science of fingerprints, dactylography or dermatoglyphics, had long been widely accepted, and well acclaimed and reputed as panacea for individualization, particularly in forensic investigations. Human fingerprints are detailed, unique, difficult to alter, and durable over the life of an individual, making them suitable as lifelong markers of human identity. This article analyses the relationship between humans and animals, and more importantly between humans and their animality. Concretely, this project proposes an ecocritical reading of fin de siècle gothic fiction, as it provides insight on the ideological foundation of humanity’s anthropocentric relation towards the environment. Through the analysis of the gothic hybrid monster, it is possible to grasp society’s interpretation and assimilation of Darwin’s revolutionary discoveries. However, not all gothic writers assimilated the apparent artificiality of humanity’s superiority in the same way. Thus, I hereby argue that rejection and fear is not the only response to the monstrous hybrid in fin de siècle gothic fiction. On the contrary, there are also critical voices who understood this new Darwinian human-hybrid identity as an opportunity to renew human relations towards nature. Therefore, I analyse the constructions of and reactions to the hybrid monster in Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Richard Marsh’s The Beetle against Vernon Lee’s Prince Alberic and the Snake Lady. By doing so, I aim at revealing and ultimately challenging the main dualism that sustains the hierarchical organization of the species: the privileging of culture over nature and reason over animality. The gothic genre is indeed characterised by the blurring of boundaries. Consequently, it reveals the human as irrational, the monster as natural and culture as repression, suggesting the need for the reconstruction of human identity and its place in the world.

Gender distribution in all creatures is a sign of Nature. For human guide it seems to realize the gender division that is found distinctive in physical nature, man and woman with entirely different physique, that all other religions admit the difference but their societal customs have counted on equal gesture. That is the reason modern societies are now viewing no problem at homosexual contact in the west, without ascertaining the results of failures in saving their nation from a purgatory desire in their youth, who have forgotten how to quench their natural thirst from the right way, of having marriage with opposite gender. This study will explain how west has allowed doing homosexuality, contrary to which no religion has allowed freedom against the natural way. Islamic teachings are proactive in restricting these kinds of illegal trails for the safety human folk. Conclusively it is clarified that due to denial of religious teachings, there are arising big issues of gender-wise sins in the world that is also arresting Muslim youth too. Therefore, only the religious theories are advisable to all humankind for safety of human-identity. Thus, Islam teaching can never allow promoting the western’s theories of ‘sexuality’ amongst Muslim community.

With a tendency to integrate with nature or their environment and to depend on others, they favor the relationship to others, as well as that between humankind and the world, which determines their identity. It is through integration into the circumstantial dimension that human beings form themselves and become aware of themselves. It follows that collective identity is stronger and more dominant than individual identity. This human way of being constitutes an essential aspect of Japanese culture and is represented in the architecture of traditional Japanese houses. Reflection on the spatiality specific to the Japanese lifestyle can promote a deep dialogue about human identity between different cultures."

Is Babits’s novel The Nightmare an allegory of human identity? What philosophical (Freud) and psychological (Bergson) influences helped him create his protagonist? The paper sets out to investigate the representation of the protagonist who dreams his life and lives his dreams. The paper surveys the stylistic means, rhetorical tropes and features of prose poetics used in the representation of the double life of the protagonist. Also, the paper surveys the diverse terms available to convey the emergence of divided self in the text. Moreover, the analysis of narratorial positions in the text reveal possible interpretations that emerge from the polyphony of the narratorial and authorial voices: the ethical positions generated by these, and also how the readers’ responses are influenced by these ethical positions. Finally, close readings of textual representations of double identity are contrasted to Freudian and Bergsonian models of identity.

One of the foundational concepts for Wolfhart Pannenberg’s theological anthropology is his notion of ‘openness to the world.’ Openness to the world, according to Pannenberg, is essential to human identity in that one’s identity is established in their openness to the world, to the other, and, ultimately, to God. I aim to bring Pannenberg’s openness to the world into dialogue with the concept of the sensus divinitatis as articulated by John Calvin and further developed by Alvin Plantinga. The question driving this paper is whether or not Pannenberg’s openness to the world can rightly be understood as the sensus divinitatis, and, if so, what might be some benefits of it. I conclude that Pannenberg’s understanding of openness to the world is a fruitful way of understanding the sensus divinitatis and a fruitful way of arguing for and explaining humanity’s innate knowledge of God.

This chapter examines the contemporary cultural roles of non-human humanoids in establishing and negotiating a sense of “human” identity, with a particular focus on the marker of green skin. Internet trolls are currently a major problem in our social relations online in the world today, and the belief of Extra-Terrestrial Aliens is growing strongly, along with the growth of globalizing discourses. The green skinned troublemakers are linked to the cyber world both in terms of globalizing culture and also as a result of that very globalizing process itself. If “humanity” is fast becoming a real identity, then what is its shadow? What is not us? This presentation explores the roles that green-skinned Others play in helping us to get to know, define, and discuss, our own ontology.
