A taxonomic reassessment of coralline algae (Corallinales, Rhodophyta) associated with reef environments in the Abrolhos Bank, northeastern Brazil, was developed based on extensive historical samples dating from 1999–2009 and a critical evaluation of type material. Our goal was to update the taxonomic status of the main nongeniculate coral reef-forming species. Our results show that four species are the main contributors to the living cover of coral reefs in the Abrolhos Bank: Lithophyllum stictaeforme, Neogoniolithon atlanticum sp. nov., Porolithon pachydermum and Spongites fructiculosus. Comparison of the type material to modern collections has shown that Lithophyllum congestum is a heterotypic synonym of L. stictaeforme. However, L. stictaeforme and P. pachydermum were the most abundant species at the studied sites, a finding consistent with other coral reefs in the region. This is the first record of S. fructiculosus in the southwestern Atlantic. This review provides the baseline data needed for the monitoring and management of the southernmost limits of coral reefs in the western Atlantic Ocean.

Moringua edwardsi is recorded for the first time at Atol das Rocas, northeastern Brazil. Previous records of the species were located in the western Atlantic Ocean, from Florida to southeastern Brazil, but with many gaps between these regions. A single specimen was collected in Atol das Rocas in July 2007 and it is deposited in the Dias da Rocha Ichthyological Collection. The new record of M. edwardsi fills a geographic distribution gap of this species and complements the inventory of fish species inhabiting one of the most unique marine protected areas in the world.

Six species of the alpheid shrimp genus Salmoneus Holthuis, 1955, including two new species, are reported from the tropical western Atlantic. Salmoneus ortmanni (Rankin, 1898) is reported for the first time from Atol das Rocas, Brazil and Aruba, Netherlands Antilles. Salmoneus carvachoi n. sp. is described on the basis of specimens previously misidentified as S. ortmanni from Guadeloupe, French Antilles, and is also known to occur in Brazil. The main difference between S. carvachoi n. sp. and S. ortmanni is the much more slender dactylus of the third to fifth pereiopods in the first species. The two species also appear to be ecologically separated: S. carvachoi n. sp. prefers silt-mud bottoms of estuaries and mangroves, while S. ortmanni occurs mostly in the rocky-coralline algae intertidal and on seagrass beds with reef patches, under rocks and coral rubble. Salmoneus rocas n. sp. is described on the basis of a single specimen collected at Atol das Rocas; this species belongs to the mostly Indo-Pacific S. serratidigitus (Coutière, 1896) species complex. Salmoneus teres Manning & Chace, 1990 and S. setosus Manning & Chace, 1990 previously known only from the isolated Ascension Island in the central Atlantic, are reported for the first time from the tropical western Atlantic: Guadeloupe and northeastern Brazil, respectively. Finally, Parabetaeus hummelincki (Schmitt, 1936) is recorded for the first time in Brazil.

Two female snapper-choking isopods Cymothoa excisa (body length 11 and 14 mm) were in the buccal cavity of two invasive lionfish Pterois volitans (total length 294 and 301 mm) collected in Alacranes Reef, southern Gulf of Mexico. This is the first record of C. excisa parasitizing invasive lionfish P. volitans in coral reefs of the Western Atlantic, where these isopods appear to have infected the host through adult prey-predator transfer.

Abstract Crustose coralline red algae (CCA) play a key role in the consolidation of many modern tropical coral reefs. It is unclear, however, if their function as reef consolidators was equally pronounced in the geological past. Using a comprehensive database on ancient reefs, we show a strong correlation between the presence of CCA and the formation of true coral reefs throughout the last 150 Ma. We investigated if repeated breakdowns in the potential capacity of CCA to spur reef development were associated with sea level, ocean temperature, CO2 concentration, CCA species diversity, and/or the evolution of major herbivore groups. Model results show that the correlation between the occurrence of CCA and the development of true coral reefs increased with CCA diversity and cooler ocean temperatures while the diversification of herbivores had a transient negative effect. The evolution of novel herbivore groups compromised the interaction between CCA and true reef growth at least three times in the investigated time interval. These crises have been overcome by morphological adaptations of CCA.

This work presents a detailed morphoanatomical study of crustose coralline algae species from the northeastern Brazilian coast, in the north of Bahia state. Nine species have been recognized: Sporolithon episporum, Lithophyllum stictaeforme, Spongites yendoi, Spongites sp., Mesophyllum erubescens, Phymatolithon masonianum, Phymatolithon calcareum, Lithothamnion crispatum and Lithothamnion brasiliense. Phymatolithon masonianum and Phymatolithon calcareum constitute the first record of these species for the northern coast of Brazil. An identification key, as well as descriptions, illustrations, comparisons with related taxa, and geographical distributions for Brazil as well as global geographic distributions are presented. Additionally, some ecological implications are discussed focusing the need of more studies about this neglected group of coralline red algae.

Non-geniculate coralline red algae are very common along the Brazilian coast occurring in a wide variety of ecosystems. Ecological surveys of Ilha Grande Bay have shown the importance of these algae in structuring benthic rocky reef environments and in their structural processes. The aim of this research was to identify the species of non-geniculate coralline red algae commonly present in the shallow rocky areas of Ilha Grande Bay, Brazil. Based on morphological and anatomical observations, three species of non-geniculate coralline algae are commonly present in the area: Lithophyllum corallinae, L. stictaeforme and Hydrolithon reinboldii. Here we provide descriptions of these species and provide a key to their identification. This study represents the first record of H. reinboldii from Brazil.

Brittle stars were collected on the southern coast of Turkey in 2005 and 2009. The most abundant species found (up to 420 ind. m -2 ) was Amphiodia obtecta. The taxonomic status of this species was unclear and is revised here. This is the first record of the genus Amphiodia in the Mediterranean Sea; it probably originates from the Red Sea, since it is absent from the entire Atlantic Ocean. Among the other species found, Ophiactis macrolepidota (previously reported as O. parva in the Mediterranean) is a new record for the marine fauna of Turkey.

Research on Honduran coral reef fish has been isolated and scattered. A list of fish species related to coral reefs was consolidated to establish a compiled database with updated taxonomy. The study was conducted between October 2017 and December 2018. Using primary and secondary sources, all potential species in the Western Atlantic were considered, and their actual presence was confirmed using catalogued records published in peer-reviewed journals that included Honduras. In addition, the specimens kept in the Museum of Natural History of Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras were added. Once the list was consolidated, the taxonomic status of each species was updated based on recent literature. A total of 159 species and 76 genera were registered in 32 families. The family with the most species was Labrisomidae with 27 species (17%). Five families had more than five 5 genera registered, while four 4 were represented by more than 16 species, which is equivalent to 42% genera and 51% species. Gobiidae was represented by 10 genera (13%) and 21 species (13%), of which two 2 were endemic: Tigrigobius rubrigenis and Elacatinus lobeli. In turn, Grammatidae was represented by one endemic species Lipogramma idabeli (1.8%). The species Diodon holocanthus and Sphoeroides testudineus represent the first catalogued records for Honduras.

Periclimenes rathbunae Schmitt, 1924 is a western Atlantic symbiotic shrimp species mainly associating with anemones. Adult shrimps of P . rathbunae are characterised by an orange-white spotted colour pattern. During fieldwork along the coast of Curaçao (2013), morphologically similar, though generally smaller sized shrimps were collected from the stony coral Dendrogyra cylindrus Ehrenberg, 1834. These specimens were overall more translucent. This study elucidates the taxonomic status of the coral-associated specimens in relation to anemone-associated specimens of P. rathbunae and related anemone-associated species using one nuclear (histone H3, H3), a mitochondrial protein-coding (cytochrome oxidase subunit I, COI) and a mitochondrial ribosomal RNA (16S) gene. Molecular phylogenetic reconstructions clustered the coral-associated specimens with anemone-associated P. rathbunae within a distinct clade, revealing that the aberrant coral-associated shrimp specimens belong to P. rathbunae. It can be concluded that 1) the stony coral D. cylindrus is a host of P. rathbunae, constituting the first record of an association between a scleractinian coral and a palaemonid shrimp species in the Atlantic Ocean; 2) the colour pattern of P. rathbunae is a phenotypically plastic characteristic that varies with size and is depending on the host species; and 3) mean body size of P. rathbunae is smaller on D. cylindrus than on the anemone Stichodactyla helianthus. This raises interesting questions about patterns of host use for this species and warrants further in-depth field ecological study for this species.

A second species of the ctenochelid genus Ctenocheloides Anker, 2010 is described based on a single female specimen collected on a rocky reef in front of Maceió, Alagoas, northeastern Brazil. Ctenocheloides almeidai sp. nov. represents the first record of Ctenocheloides in the Atlantic Ocean. The new species differs from C. attenboroughi Anker, 2010, the type species from Madagascar, in the number of teeth in the crista dentata of the third maxilliped, the proportions and ar-mature of the major and minor chelipeds, and several other characters. The microhabitats of C. almeidai sp. nov. and C. attenboroughi are remarkably similar: both species inhabit burrows made in rock crevices cemented by compact clay-like silt, at very shallow depths (1–1.5 m). A key to the western Atlantic species of the family Ctenochelidae is provided.
