Justicia thunbergioides (Acanthaceae, Justicieae) is reported for the first time from Paraíba State, northeastern Brazil. It was collected in the municipality of Cuité, Agreste region, a transitional area between the “Zona da Mata” and “Sertão”. This new occurrence in Paraíba extends its range approximately 140 km from the closest population and it was found in hypoxerophytic caatinga, forming dense clumps in open but shaded areas, under scrub vegetation and on stony soil. Acanthaceae in general has a great ornamental potential and this species, in particular, may be used in native plant gardens since it is adapted to semi-arid weather conditions and also attracts local fauna. Description, taxonomic comments, distributional map and images are presented for this taxon. Additionally, a key to distinguish the native species of Justicia in Paraíba is provided.

Ascomycetes with passive ascospore liberation fruiting on herbivore dung are discussed. A total of 270 samples of cattle, goat and horse dung were collected for 20 months along an edaphic and climatic gradient from the Atlantic Forest complex to the semi-arid Caatinga complex in Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil. Thirteen species were identified and described. Lophotrichus bartlettii and Kernia nitida were the most frequently recorded species. Corynascus sepedonium, Leuconeurospora pulcherrima, Melanospora damnosa, M. zamiae, Mycoarachis inversa, Zopfiella erostrata and Zopfiella longicaudata are reported for the first time in Brazil. Descriptions, a photographic plate and an identification key to the studied species, along with a table with key characters of the most common genera of coprophilous ascomycetes with passive ascospore liberation are provided.

Moringua edwardsi is recorded for the first time at Atol das Rocas, northeastern Brazil. Previous records of the species were located in the western Atlantic Ocean, from Florida to southeastern Brazil, but with many gaps between these regions. A single specimen was collected in Atol das Rocas in July 2007 and it is deposited in the Dias da Rocha Ichthyological Collection. The new record of M. edwardsi fills a geographic distribution gap of this species and complements the inventory of fish species inhabiting one of the most unique marine protected areas in the world.

Social wasps are broadly distributed in Brazil, and their distribution is closely related to local plant composition. However, only a few studies on the diversity of these insects have been carried out in northeastern Brazil, and in Caatinga Biome the diversity is probably underestimated due to the lack of inventories for the region. Aiming at advancing the knowledge about the wasp fauna, we carried out this study from October 2005 to September 2006 in Ibipeba, northeastern Brazil. We collected 172 wasps of five genera and eight species, and recorded Polybia ruficeps Schrottky, 1902 for the first time in the state of Bahia. The most abundant species was Polybia ignobilis (Haliday, 1836) (n = 69), and the least abundant were Brachygastra lecheguana (Latreille, 1824) (n = 2) and Polistes canadensis (Linnaeus, 1758) (n = 2). The present study inventory focused exclusively on the diversity of social wasps in an area of Caatinga, which contributes to advance the local fauna knowledge.

A single male of Heraclides a. astyalus was collected in the Catimbau National Park, Buíque, Pernambuco, located in the semi-arid region of northeastern Brazil. It is the first record for the species in the Caatinga domain and the first record for the subspecies in latitudes above the São Francisco river.

Limnoperna fortunei (Dunker, 1857) is a small mytilid native to Southeast Asia. It was introduced in South America in early 1990 and has dispersed from Argentina to central Brazil, and until 2014 has been restricted mainly to the Paraná and Uruguay river basins. The present note reports the occurrence of Limnoperna fortunei for the first time in the São Francisco River basin in northeastern Brazil. The establishment of L. fortunei in these regions will require close attention from the government and also by society.

 This report provides the new record of the sponge Radiospongilla inesi and the slug Omalonyx matheroni for the Vale do Paraiba, State of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil, besides the symbiosis among R. inesi and individuals of some benthic macroinvertebrates. Monthly collections were carried out in the Ribeirão dos Mottas, with a 0.5 cm sieve in the edge vegetation, as well as collections by hand. Three specimens of R. inesi were found, from a lotic environment under pebbles. In addition, individuals of four insect families, Sisyridae, Hydropsychidae, Chironomidae e Simuliidae, were found on the sponge aquiferous system. Six individuals of the semi-aquatic slug O. matheroni were also caught under rocks and cans. Despite the sponges are commonly found in the most of the environments, the freshwater species represents one of the most unknown animal groups of the world.  R. inesi was report at first time in Brazil in Pernambuco State, northeastern Brazil region, and this report represents just the second record of this species in Brazil, and the first time to the southeastern region. The presence of individuals of four insect families pointing out the importance of R. inesi on the life history of these animals. Despite some records of Omalonix sp. to the São Paulo State, this report seems to be the first record of the O. matheroni to the Vale do Paraíba, northern of the São Paulo State.

Corbicula largillierti is a native mollusk from China. In Brazil, this species was first recorded in the Pantanal of Mato Grosso. This short communication reports the occurrence of C. largillierti for the first time in the Paraíba river basin (Brazilian semi-arid), and also considers the risk of introduction of other molluscs invaders in this basin due to the diversion of water from the São Francisco River. Densities of individuals ranged from 33 to 65 ind.m-2 (maximum values of 484 ind.m-2) in coarse sediment (gravel, 2-4 mm). The diversion of waters from the São Francisco river can lead to the introduction of new species, enhancing ecological problems in the Paraiba river basin.

Cryptotaenia japonica Hassk., a native species of Eastern Asia, is reported for the first time for the flora of Colombia. This taxon is easily recognized by its ternate leaves, rhombic leaflets, leaf margins irregularly serrate, cymose inflorescences, irregular rays and pedicels, white petals, cylindric stylopodium, erect stiles, and oblong fruits with five ribs. To date, this species has been recorded only in one locality in Cundinamarca department. A neotypification of C. japonica is proposed and keys for the genera of the tribe Oenantheae present in Colombia, and the species of Cryptotaenia s. str., are presented. Additionally, we report for the first time the family Empididae (Diptera) as floral visitor of this species.

We provide the first record of Xiphophorus maculatus (Günther, 1866) in a river basin in the northeastern Brazil. Specimens were collected in the Jaguaribe River basin, João Pessoa, Paraíba state, Brazil. Two hundred eighty-one specimens, corresponding to 143 males and 138 females of X. maculatus, were collected at nine sites along the basin, from 2017 to 2019. Specimens total length ranged from 17.5 to 26.6 mm in males and from 11.7 to 32.7 mm in females. Introduction of non-native species greatly threatens the biological diversity worldwide. When introduced into a new habitat, X. maculatus usually decreases microcrustacean, macroinvertebrate and native fish populations.

Potimirim potimirim (Müller, 1881), a species of coastal freshwater shrimp, is recorded for the first time from the state of Rio Grande do Norte, northeastern of Brazil, where it was collected in a small tributary of the Potengi River. This record extends the distribution of this species about 220 km north along Brazilian coast. New records, such as this, reinforce the need for greater research efforts in the northeastern freshwater ecosystems of Brazil to provide better understand the region’s biodiversity and establish better parameters for conservation actions.
