Redescription of Chone infundibuliformis Krøyer, 1856 (Polychaeta: Sabellidae) and histology of the branchial crown appendages, collar and glandular ridge

Fifty-three species have been formally described in Chone Krøyer, 1856, showing wide variation in the shapes of dorsal lips, peristomium, and posterior abdominal uncini. Previous studies indicate that such variation could result in splitting of the genus; however, the original description of the type species, C. infundibuliformis did not include critical details and illustrations, and for other species, incomplete or misleading information has been provided. In order to redescribe the species C. infundibuliformis and delineate the genus, type and topotype materials were reviewed, and histological sections of the appendages of the branchial crown, collar and glandular ridge are described. The redescription points out that in C. infundibuliformis: 1) insertion of the branchial lobes is not exposed beyond the collar; 2) radioles have a paired series of pinnules of different sizes; 3) radiolar flanges are broad; 4) dorsal lips are broadly rounded, as long as wide, without mid-rib; they have hyaline cartilage, but there is no extension of the branchial skeleton; 5) dorsal lips are vascularized by a plexus of small blood vessels derived from the basal branchial blood vessels, which further back communicate with the dorsal vessel; 6) thoracic uncini have teeth above the main fang of unequal size, median tooth of basal row larger than teeth in subsequent rows; 7) uncinus shape shows variation within each torus, but no intersegmental gradation is appreciable; 8) females with oocytes distributed in all thoracic and abdominal segments; males with sperm in abdomen, with barrel-shaped nucleus and mushroom-shaped acrosome. The collar is supported by a dense mass of hyaline cartilage and covered by glandular epithelium composed of basophile glands. Acidophil glands, tubular-shaped with granulose secretions, constitute the glandular ridge. Size of teeth in thoracic uncini, presence or absence of abdominal uncini variation, latero-ventral posterior abdominal depression, dorsal lips internal construction and glandular ridge are compared among some species of Chone and close genera.

The bethylid genus Foenobethylus Kieffer, 1913, unstudied for almost a century, is redescribed and assigned to the subfamily Pristocerinae based on a preliminary phylogenetic assessment. Four new species: F. bidentatus n. sp. (Brunei), F. elongatus n. sp. (Malaysia), F. emiliacasellae n. sp. (Thailand), and F. thomascokeri n. sp. (Malaysia) are described, based on males only, as females remain unrecognised in this genus. All specimens are deposited in the Department of Entomology, the Natural History Museum, London, U.K. The type species F. gracilis Kieffer (Philippines), although unrepresented by any traceable specimen, can be distinguished from these species based on the original description. A key to the five known species of Foenobethylus is provided.

Strain IK-1T was isolated from decaying tissues of the shrub Wikstroemia oahuensis collected on O‘ahu, Hawai‘i. Cells were rods that stained Gram-negative. Gliding motility was not observed. The strain was oxidase-negative and catalase-positive. Zeaxanthin was the major carotenoid. Flexirubin-type pigments were not detected. The most abundant fatty acids in whole cells of IK-1T grown on R2A were iso-C15 : 0 and one or both of C16 : 1ω7c and C16 : 1ω6c. Based on comparisons of the nucleotide sequence of the 16S rRNA gene, the closest neighbouring type strains were Flavobacterium rivuli WB 3.3-2T and Flavobacterium subsaxonicum WB 4.1-42T, with which IK-1T shares 93.84 and 93.67 % identity, respectively. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 44.2 mol%. On the basis of distance from its nearest phylogenetic neighbours and phenotypic differences, the species Flavobacterium akiainvivens sp. nov. is proposed to accommodate strain IK-1T ( = ATCC BAA-2412T = CIP 110358T) as the type strain. The description of the genus Flavobacterium is emended to reflect the DNA G+C contents of Flavobacterium akiainvivens IK-1T and other species of the genus Flavobacterium described since the original description of the genus.

Degenerative pathology of the musculoskeletal system is one of the main reasons for decreased mobility in patients of the older age group. Increasing the life expectancy leads to predominance non-epidemic pathology in all developed countries. Therefore, degenerative diseases of musculoskeletal system have not only medical significance but also social significance. Objective is studying the morphological features of synovial environment of the decompensated osteoarthritic (OA) knee joint. Structural features of subchondral bone, hyaline cartilage of the femur and tibia, the articular capsule, menisci and ligamentous apparatus of the knee joint were studied in 64 patients who underwent total knee arthroplasty at the Department of Traumatology and Orthopedics Bashkirian State Medical University in the period from 2015 to 2020. Material selection, preparation of histological samples, staining with hematoxylin-eosin, microscopy was performed. Adaptive signs of articular cartilage of the femoral condyles manifest in the form of cartilage tissue rearrangement, which are most pronounced in the central zone of the cartilage. At the same time, the phenomena of decompensation and significant areas of destruction are noted. Also, the subchondral bone was replaced with connective tissue with subsequent sclerosis. This sclerosis subsequently led to the decompensation of structures of the hyaline cartilage in the deep and middle zones. Destructive and dystrophic processes were noted in the knee joint menisci. Articular cartilage was replaced with granulation tissue with subsequent invasion of blood vessels. Cruciate ligaments in patients with OA show signs of adaptation due to expansion of endothenonium layers between bundles of collagen fibers and an increase in the diameter of blood vessels.

Two new species of asellote isopods from the waters surroundng the San Juan Archipelago are described and diagnosed. Baeonectes improvisus n. gen., n. sp. and Acanthamunnopsis milleri n. sp. belong to the highly evolved, natatory families Eurycopidae and Munnopsidae, respectively. Baeonectes, a circum-arctic and boreal shallow-water genus, also includes B. muticus (Sars), the type-species. The taxonomic concept of Acanthamunnopsis has difficulties that must be resolved before A. milleri can be described. To this end, the family Acanthamunnopsidae Schultz is invalidated and merged with the Munnopsidae; the genus Acanthamunnopsis Schultz is revised; and A. hystrix, the type-species, is redescribed with corrections and additions to the original description. The unusual presence of the bathypelagic genus Acanthamunnopsis in the surface waters of the San Juan Archipelago is discussed. Acanthamunnopsis milleri is tentatively postulated to be a deep resident of the open ocean that was carried landward into the Strait of Juan de Fuca by upwelled intrusions of cold, saline water.

The chrysomelid genus Bohumiljania Monrós, 1958, is revised, with nine species, seven new: B. aoupinie sp. nov., B. caledonica (Jolivet, 1957), B. lafoa sp. nov., B. humboldti Jolivet, Verma & Mille, 2005, B. mandjelia sp nov., B. tango sp. nov., B. xanthogramma sp. nov., B. xaracuu sp. nov., B. yuaga sp. nov. All species are described. The type species, B. caledonica, is shown to have been misidentified in recent literature. The original description of the other described species, B. humboldti, is shown to include at least three species. A key is provided for identification of Bohumiljania species, all of which are endemic to the main island of New Caledonia. Six of the species are known from just 14 specimens, suggesting that further species remain to be discovered. The morphology and biology of Bohumiljania is reviewed, including description of the larva.

AbstractDipetalonema caudispina (Molin, 1858) and D. gracile (Rudolphi, 1809) (Filarioidea: Onchocercidae) are two of six known species of filarial nematodes that parasitize Neotropical non-human primates. Adult filariae were collected from the thoracic and abdominal cavities of 38 of 44 specimens of Sapajus macrocephalus (Spix, 1823) and nine of ten specimens of Cebus albifrons (Humboldt, 1812) (Primates: Cebidae), distributed in the Yavarí-Mirín river basin and used locally for human consumption. Co-occurrence of D. caudispina and D. gracile is reported for the first time, with a prevalence of 18.5% (10 of 54 hosts examined). Our finding of D. caudispina and D. gracile in cebids from the Peruvian Amazon constitutes a new geographical record for both filariae, two new host records for D. caudispina, and the first report of D. gracile in S. macrocephalus. In addition, we provide morphometric data for D. caudispina, complementing the original description, as well as scanning electron microscopy details on the structure of the area rugosa and number of caudal papillae in males.

The genus Oligoxystre Vellard 1924 is revised. Pseudoligoxystre Vol 2001 is synonymized with Oligoxystre and its typespecies, P. bolivianum Vol 2001, is considered valid. The type-specimen of Oligoxystre auratum Vellard 1924, type-species by original designation, is considered lost. No additional material matching the original description was found and therefore the species is diagnosed from the original description. Four new species, all from Brazil, are also described: O. caatinga, O. dominguense, O. tucuruiense, and O. rufoniger. Data on natural history of O. bolivianum from field and captivity observations are presented. The genus Cenobiopelma Mello-Leitão & Arlé 1934 ) is based upon Cenobiopelma mimeticum Mello-Leitão & Arlé 1934 for which no type was ever designated and hence both are considered nomina nuda.

AbstractErnietta plateauensis Pflug, 1966 is the type species of the Erniettomorpha, an extinct clade of Ediacaran life. It was likely a gregarious, partially infaunal organism. Despite its ecological and taxonomic significance, there has not been an in-depth systematic description in the literature since the original description fell out of use. A newly discovered field site on Farm Aar in southern Namibia has yielded dozens of specimens buried in original life position. Mudstone and sandstone features associated with the fossils indicate that organisms were buried while still exposed to the water column rather than deposited in a flow event. Ernietta plateauensis was a sac-shaped erniettomorph with a body wall constructed from a double layer of tubes. It possessed an equatorial seam lying perpendicular to the tubes. The body is asymmetrical on either side of this seam. The tubes change direction along the body length and appear to be constricted together in the dorsal part of the organism.

AbstractThe genusRhopalocystis(Eocrinoidea, Blastozoa) is characterized by both a short stratigraphic range (Fezouata Shale, middle Tremadocian to middle Floian, Lower Ordovician) and a reduced geographic extension (Agdz-Zagora area, central Anti-Atlas, Morocco). Since the original description of its type species (R. destombesiUbaghs, 1963), three successive revisions of the genusRhopalocystishave led to the erection of nine additional species. The morphological disparity within this genus is here critically reassessed on the basis of both historical material and new recently collected samples. The detailed examination of all specimens, coupled with morphometric and cladistic analyses, points toward a relatively strong support for five morphotypes. A systematic revision ofRhopalocystisis thus suggested, with only five valid taxa:R. destombesi, R. fragaChauvel, 1971, R. grandisChauvel, 1971, R. havlicekiChauvel, 1978, andR. zagoraensisChauvel, 1971. The five others are considered as junior synonyms (R. dehirensisChauvel and Régnault, 1986,R. lehmaniChauvel and Régnault, 1986,R. sp. A,R. sp. B, andR. sp. C).

Some of the taxonomic characters originally argued for the Cuban monotypic genus Cubacanthozomus Teruel, 2007, are unsubstantial. Others were misinterpretations of drawings given in the original description of Schizomus rowlandi Dumitresco, 1973, the only source of taxonomic information on which Teruel (2007) based the new genus. Recently a new collection of this species was made in a small cave about 350 m from one of the caves mentioned in the original description: Cueva de Majana, Baracoa municipality, Guantánamo province. On the basis of new morphological evidence found during examination of two females and a male, both the genus Cubacanthozomus and its type-species are herein redescribed. Cueva de Majana is recognized as the true type locality of C. rowlandi, which male holotype was erroneously listed as being collected in a cave from central Cuba, 600 km away. Additional data are provided on the morphology, natural history and conservation status of C. rowlandi, which is now being proposed as an endangered species.
