First record of the genus Aristelliger (Squamata: Sphaerodactylidae) in Cuba, with the description of a new species

The genus Aristelliger comprises seven species of which six inhabit the West Indies, and one occurs in Central America and satellite islands. For the first time, the genus is reported from Cuba, and a new species (Aristelliger reyesi sp. n.) is described from that island. The new taxon has affinities with the smaller species of the genus (subgenus Aristelligella): A. expectatus, A. cochranae, and A. barbouri. It differs from them in color pattern and other morphological characters.

The new species Dicranocentrus paramoense, D. bidentatus, Heteromurus (Heteromurtrella) echinatus and H. (H.) pruinosus are described from specimens collected in the State of Mérida, Venezuela. A new species of each genus comes from a cloud forest near the city of Mérida and a new species of each taxon was collected in paramos northeast of Mérida. Congeneric species are phyletically very near and their closest relatives live in Central America and the West Indies. Dicranocentrus bidentatus is the sole species of its genus with only two teeth (the basal pair) along the inner margin of the unguis. Heteromurus (Heteromurtrella) echinatus is unique among members of its subgenus in possessing dental spines, although some individuals lack these structures. This is the first record of such intraspecific variation. Four tables detail variations of a number of characters and 41 figures complement the text.

The crustacean order Thermosbaenacea is reported for the first time from the Southern Hemisphere, from almost fresh water in a cave habitat in tropical Western Australia. Halosbaena tulki, sp. nov. belongs to a genus previously known only from saline waters in the West Indies, Columbia and Canary Is. The discovery is consistent with a very ancient origin of the order and distribution of the genus by plate movements following the breakup of Pangaea.

Vespula akrei Landolt sp. nov. is described from Guatemala. The first record of Vespa crabro L. in Guatemala is given, and Vespula inexspectata Eck from Mexico is re-described. We place Vespula akrei sp. nov. in the Vespula vulgaris (L.) species group (= Paravespula Bluthgen) based on morphology, color pattern, and DNA sequences from two mitochrondrial genes. It is presently known only from the Sierra de las Minas mountain range in southeastern Guatemala.

Keys to 11 genera and 21 species of Calliphoridae found or likely to be found in the West Indies are given. Species distributions and key characters are discussed. Lucilia fayeae sp. nov. is described from numerous specimens from Dominica, Puerto Rico, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent. Calliphora maestrica Peris et al. is redescribed and the male of the species is described for the first time.

A new megacanthoxea- bearing tetillid Acanthotetilla celebensis sp.nov. (Porifera: Demospongiae: Spirophorida: Tetillidae) is described from North Sulawesi, Indonesia. The new species is compared with all other (four) Acanthotetilla species occurring in the Indian Ocean and the West Indies. The new species differs from these other species by the overall morphology, and especially the presence of two sizes of megacanthoxeas. This is the first record of Acanthotetilla in Indonesia.

The genus Procerobaetis Kaltenbach & Gattolliat, 2020 is reported for the first time from Thailand, and Procerobaetis totuspinosussp. nov. is described as a new species based on larvae. It can be easily distinguished from other known Procerobaetis species by the presence of triangular spines at the posterior margin of tergites VI–IX. COI sequences were obtained from all known species. The genetic distances (Kimura 2-parameter) between the new species and the other species are between 20% and 23%. The morphological characters of the new species and its closely related species are discussed; larval key to all species of the genus Procerobaetis is also provided.

ABSTRACT Nassarius Duméril, 1805 is the most diverse genus within the nassariid subfamily Nassariinae. Nonetheless, information on members of this genus from the Indian subcontinent, a major ecoregion of the western Indo-Pacific, is scarce. Here, we report Nassarius fuscus (Hombron & Jacquinot, 1848) for the first time from India and provide information on its morphology and ecology. This species has previously been recorded only from the central Indo-Pacific. We also describe a new species of Nassarius, N. arewarensis n. sp., which on the basis of our data is sister to N. fuscus. Both species were found within heterogeneous strands of mangroves in the shallow intertidal area of the Aare-Ware Creek, Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, India. Morphological comparisons as well as species delimitation analyses using the universal cytochrome c oxidase subunit I barcode indicated that these species are distinct. The present study enhances our understanding of the species composition and the diversity of Nassarius in India.

A new species of Heptageniidae, Paegniodes sapanensissp. nov., is described based on larvae, subimagos, eggs, and COI data. The mayfly genus Paegniodes Eaton, 1881 is reported for the first time from Thailand. The larva of the new species can be distinguished from other known Paegniodes species by i) lamellae of gill I ca 1/4 of fibrilliform portion and ii) mandibles and basal segment of maxillary palp without dense setae on margin. The subimago characters useful to distinguish this new species from previously known species are i) the median stripes on abdominal terga and ii) shape of the female subgenital and subanal plates. The genetic distance between the new species and P. cupulatus (Eaton, 1871) was approximately 11%. The morphological characters of the new species are discussed and compared to other known species.
