Rediscovery of the hadal species Amblyops magnus Birstein & Tchindonova, 1958 (Crustacea: Mysida: Mysidae): first record from the Mariana Trench

The blind deep-sea mysid Amblyops magnus Birstein & Tchindonova, 1958 is recorded for the first time from the Mariana Trench based on an adult female specimen collected near the Challenger Deep at a depth of 6555 m. The specimen was described, illustrated and compared with the type description as well as with the materials previously collected from the Japan Trench. The mitochondrial COI barcode was also obtained from the specimen and submitted to GenBank. This is the third discovery of this rare species and significantly extends its geographic distribution range to the low latitude hadal zone.

Abstract Propagurus haigae (McLaughlin, 1997), a relatively large-sized species of Paguridae, is reported for the first time from Japanese waters based on a single specimen collected from a depth of 620 m off Ie Island, central Ryukyu Islands, southwestern Japan. It is the third species of the genus Propagurus McLaughlin & de Saint Laurent, 1998 known from Japanese waters. The present specimen greatly extends the distribution range of P. haigae, because the previous northernmost record was the Molucca Sea in Indonesia.

A chemical study of the ethyl acetate (EtOAc) extract from the deep-sea-derived fungus Penicillium thomii YPGA3 led to the isolation of a new austalide meroterpenoid (1) and seven known analogues (2−8), two new labdane-type diterpenoids (9 and 10) and a known derivative (11). The structures of new compounds 1, 9, and 10 were determined by comprehensive analyses via nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectroscopy (MS) data. The absolute configurations of 1, 9, and 10 were determined by comparisons of experimental electronic circular dichroism (ECD) with the calculated ECD spectra. Compound 1 represented the third example of austalides bearing a hydroxyl group at C-5 instead of the conserved methoxy in other known analogues. To our knowledge, diterpenoids belonging to the labdane-type were discovered from species of Penicillium for the first time. Compound 1 showed cytotoxicity toward MDA-MB-468 cells with an IC50 value of 38.9 μM. Compounds 2 and 11 exhibited inhibition against α-glucosidase with IC50 values of 910 and 525 μM, respectively, being more active than the positive control acarbose (1.33 mM).

A new species of Cladochaeta Coquillett (Diptera: Drosophilidae) is described, C. caxiuana sp. nov. from the Brazilian Amazon, based on 10 male and 10 female specimens obtained from nymphs of Sphodroscarta trivirgata (Amyot & Serville, 1843) (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha: Aphrophoridae). The female of Cladochaeta atlantica Pirani & Amorim, 2016 is described based on specimens reared from spider egg sacs of the spider Cryptachaea migrans (Keyserling, 1884) (Araneae: Theridiidae) obtained in the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. This is the first record of this fly genus attacking a spider egg sac. The species Cladochaeta sororia (Williston, 1896) is recorded for the first time from Brazil, based on specimens collected in an urban garden in the Amazon. In addition, an unidentified female specimen of Cladochaeta Coquillett, 1900 was obtained from the cocoon of a spider wasp of the genus Notocyphus Smith (Hymenoptera: Pompilidae).

The silver-cheeked toad fish, Lagocephalus scleratus, was recorded for the first time on 25 September 2014. Two specimens of this fish species were collected from the by-catch landed by a commercial deep-sea trawler at Kasimedu Fishing Harbour, Chennai coast, Southeast India. The morphometric and meristic characters of the recorded specimens are described and discussed. The specimen was compared with earlier reports.

The Great evening bat Ia io Thomas, 1902, previously considered as an endemic to the Indochinese subregion, is reported from the Sundaic subregion for the first time based on specimens collected from three localities in Surat Thani Province and Phang Nga Province, peninsular Thailand. It is described herein as a new subspecies based on its substantially larger body and skull size. The mitochondrial COI and cytochrome b genes reveal that the new subspecies has a genetic distance of 1.89% and 1.65%, respectively, from the nominate subspecies. Echolocation calls comprise four harmonics, with the maximum energy in the first harmonic (fmaxe) of 23.6–27.4 kHz. Notes on the population size as well as roosting and foraging behaviour are also provided.

The non-indigenous tetraodontid of Indo-Pacific origin Tylerius spinosissimus is recorded for the first time in Turkish waters and for the third time in the Mediterranean Sea. This record increases to 53 the number of Indo-Pacific alien fish species present along the coasts of Turkey.

The genus Trischizostoma Boeck, 1861 is a cosmopolitan group of parasitic and symbiotic aristoidean amphipods whose distribution is poorly known, with scarce specimens reported principally from pelagic environments until 3655 m depth. In this note, Trischizostoma crosnieri Lowry & Stoddart,1993, a species described for the southwest Pacific, is recorded for the first time in the southeast Pacific. The species was known previously only from a female specimen, described from the Philippines, with two additional unpublished records from the east coast of Australia and Tasmania. The specimens studied herein were obtained at 874 m depth, 36 nm to the northwest of Concepción, Biobío Region, in a methane seep site. However, the relationship between this species with this particular habitat is still uncertain. The genus Trischizostoma has been cited for the Nazca and Salas y Gómez ridges; nevertheless, our finding constitutes the first record of a species at the continental margin off Chile, raising to four the known species of the genus for Chilean waters.

The deep oceanic sediments were collected from the Challenger Deep in the southwestern part of the Mariana Trench. Considering the salt in the pore water, a modified method for determining the physical and mechanical properties of the deep-sea sediments was proposed, by which the geological engineering indices were measured and corrected. Through the scanning electronic microscope (SEM), the microstructures of the sediments were found to be composed of flocculation, with a large number of diatom debris and empty shells of organism around it. As a consequence, the porosity and compressibility are high; internal friction angle and cohesion are low. Besides high water content, high porosity, high liquid limit, high plasticity, high consolidation coefficient, low compressive modulus, low shear strength, low density, and low specific gravity, the deep-sea mining machine may slip and subside. This research can improve the understanding of the deep-sea sedimentary environment of the Challenger Deep in the southwestern part of the Mariana Trench and provide an essential reference for the parameter calibration as well as the basis for walking-characteristic study and optimization design of the deep-sea mining vehicle.

One Thysanoplusia orichalcea female specimen was collected in Szakály, Tolna county, for the first time in Hungary. Occurrence of the species in Hungary is not unexpected, and it could repeatedly migrate to Central Europe in the next years due to climate change. With 3 figures.

The Diadem Leaf-nosed Bat Hipposideros diadema (E. Geoffroy, 1813) is recorded for the first time from the Andaman Islands, India. A solitary female specimen was collected on October 13, 2015 from a limestone cave on Baratang Island. Cranial measurements and other morphological characters indicate that the specimen differs from the endemic subspecies, the Nicobar Diadem Leaf-nosed Bat Hipposideros diadema nicobarensis (Dobson, 1871), but compares favourably with the South-east Asian subspecies, Mason’s Diadem Leaf-nosed Bat Hipposideros diadema masoni (Dobson, 1872), in description, craniodental characters, and echolocation calls. This is the first record of Hipposideros diadema (E. Geoffroy, 1813) from Andaman Islands, and the subspecies Mason’s Diadem Leaf-nosed Bat Hipposideros diadema masoni (Dobson, 1872) from India.
