We present a review of distribution and new synonymy of the 63 valid species of biting midges in the genus Dasyhelea occurring in Europe. New distribution records, mostly from Ukraine and Romania, are provided. Dasyhelea alonensis (Strobl), D. mayor (Strobl), D. decoratissima (Strobl) and D. bilineata Goetghebuer are redescribed and interpreted. Seventeen NEW SYNONYMS are proposed for the following species: Dasyhelea modesta Winnertz (= D. inclusa Kieffer), D. mayor (Strobl) (= D. aperta Goetghebuer & Timon David, D. wuelkeri Mayer), D. bilobata Kieffer (= D. luteiventris Goetghebuer, D. spiralis Remm), D. bilineata Goetghebuer (= D. insignipalpis Kieffer, Tetraphora saxicola Edwards, D. geleiana Zilahi-Sebess, D. montana Zilahi-Sebess, D. lithotelmatica Strenzke, D. tecticola Remmert, Culicoides dieuzeidei Vaillant, D. karelica Glukhova & Brodskaya), D. dampfi Kieffer (= D. estonica Kieffer), D. turficola Kieffer (= D. malibui Yu), D. turanicola Remm & Nazarmukhamedov (= D. serrata Navai), D. corinneae Gosseries (= D. chonetus Yu & Zou). Dasyhelea furva Remm is removed from synonymy with D. bifida Zilahi-Sebess and D. alonensis (Strobl) removed from synonymy with D. flavoscutellata (Zetterstedt). Ceratopogon aristolochiae Rondani is transferred from the genus Dasyhelea to the genus Forcipomyia (comb. nov.) and recognized as a new senior synonym of Forcipomyia brevicubita Goetghebuer and F. pontica Remm (syn. nov.). Lectotypes are designated for Dasyhelea alonensis (Strobl), D. mayor (Strobl), D. decoratissima (Strobl) and Forcipomyia aristolochiae (Rondani). Dasyhelea longituba Kieffer, D. strigosa Kieffer, D. neobifurcata Wirth and D. paragrata Remm are excluded from the European fauna. Types of two species of monkey moths (Eupterotidae, Lepidoptera) described by Johan Christian Fabricius were located and are here figured for the first time, and lectotypes are designated for both species. The lectotype of Bombyx hibisci Fabricius 1775 is a male from the Hunterian Museum (Glasgow). The lectotype of Bombyx orientalis Fabricius 1793, originally listed from “Dom. Lund” was found in the Zoological Museum—University of Copenhagen (as temporarily loan from the Zoological Museum of Kiel University) with an old incorrect identification label. Both species are members of the genus Eupterote Hübner, 1820 (so-called Brachytera-lineage).                The following new synonymy can thus be established: Eupterote orientalis (Fabricius, 1793), comb. nov. (= Dreata geminata Walker 1855, syn. nov., syn. corr.; = Eupterote geminata var. hebes Grünberg 1914, syn. nov.; = Dreata anada Moore 1860, syn. nov., = Brachytera phalaenaria C. & R. Felder, 1874, syn. nov., = Eupterote auriflua Moore, 1884, syn. nov.).          The type locality for orientalis originally given as “India orientali” is likely to be Sri Lanka.          The related taxon, Eupterote gardneri Bryk, 1950, stat. nov. is established as valid species (bona species) with the a new synonym, Eupterote bifasciata Kishida, 1994, syn. nov.          Eupterote primularis Moore, 1884 is considered a distinct species native to Central and Southern India.

The taxonomy of the Coilodera penicillata Hope, 1831 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Cetoniinae) species complex, which is recognized by the black body and elytra with larger tomentose maculae, is revised. Six Indochinese species assigned to this complex, including C. grandimaculata new species from Tibet, China. Coilodera nigroscutellaris Moser, 1902 revised status and C. formosana Moser, 1910 revised status formerly treated as two subspecies of C. penicillata Hope, 1831 are elevated to species rank. The distribution of C. penicillata in China is confirmed based on examination of specimens from Yunnan and Tibet, and almost all previous Chinese literature records should be referred to C. nigroscutellaris. Coilodera dives (Gory & Percheron, 1833) revised status previously synonymized with C. penicillata is herein considered as a valid species based on the examination of types and additional specimens, and C. miksici Antoine, 1986 new synonymy is regarded as a junior synonym of C. dives. A lectotype is designated for Coilodera dives (Gory & Percheron, 1833). The record of C. mearesii (Westwood, 1842) in southeastern China is attributed to a misidentification of C. nigroscutellaris, and it is here newly recoreded from Tibet near the Nepal-China border. Diagnosis characters and intraspecific variations are illustrated for all six species, new distribution records and a key to species are also presented. Ecological information is provided for all species.

AbstractThe systematic position of the Piophilidae sens. lat. within a group of nine schizophorous families with tephritid-like ovipositors (Lonchaeidae, Otitidae, Platystomatidae, Pyrgotidae, Tephritidae, Tachiniscidae, Richardiidae, Pallopteridae, and Piophilidae) is elucidated. It is shown to be a sister-group of the Pallopteridae, and these two families together with the Richardiidae comprise a monophyletic suprafamily unit within the larger group of families. The evolutionary changes that occurred within the Piophilidae are analyzed and the supposed phylogeny of its component taxa is portrayed. The family is redefined to include neottiophilids and thyreophorids and is classified into two subfamilies, Neottiophilinae and Piophilinae; the latter is divided into two tribes, Mycetaulini and Piophilini (with subtribes Piophilina and Thyreophorina). Twenty-three genera are recognized and taxonomically defined; this includes description of two new genera, Neopiophila and Parapiophila. Clusina Curran is synonymized withProtopiophila Duda (new synonymy), and four nominal species are placed in synonymy for the first time, i.e. Piophila anomala Malloch and Piophila setosa Melander and Spuler = Parapiophila vulgaris (Fallén) (new synonymy), Piophila flavifacies Brunetti = P. casei (Linnaeus) (new synonymy), and Mycetaulus pulchellus Banks = Mycetaulus longipennis Loew (new synonymy). Six new species, Actenoptera avalona (Newfoundland), Neopiophila setaluna (Northwest Territories), Protopiophila atrichosa (Peru and British Honduras), Protopiophila pallida (Peru and British Guiana), Prochyliza azteca (Mexico), and Prochyliza inca (Peru) are described. The following 20 new combinations are made: Mycetaulus lituratus (Melander and Spuler), Allopiophila testacea (Melander), Protopiophila nigriventris (Curran), Prochyliza lundbecki (Duda), nigricornis (Meigen), nigricoxa (Melander and Spuler) and nigrimana (Meigen), Arctopiophila arctica (Holmgren), Parapiophila atrifrons (Melander and Spuler), calceata (Duda), coerulescens (Zetterstedt), dudai (Frey), flavipes (Holmgren), lonchaeoides (Zetterstedt), nitidissima (Melander and Spuler), pectiniventris (Duda), penicillata (Steyskal), vulgaris (Fallén), and xanthopoda (Melander and Spuler). In all, 67 valid species are placed, their geographic distributions are outlined, and the zoogeographic implications are discussed. A lectotype is designated for Piophila flavitarsis Meigen = Madiza glabra Fallén (Milichiidae).A key to subfamilies, tribes, and genera is provided, and keys to world species are given where needed. An annotated world list of all names referred to the family (sens. lat.) is provided. The paper includes 58 figures, two tables, and 122 literature references.

We revise the genus Acanthoctenus Keyserling, 1877 recognizing thirteen valid species, of which five are new species and two are re-validated. Further, we find one new synonymy and transfer one species. We describe Acanthoctenus alux sp. nov. from Guatemala, A. chickeringi sp. nov. and A. lamarrei sp. nov. from Panama, A. manauara sp. nov. from Brazil and A. torotoro sp. nov. from Bolivia. We revalidate Acanthoctenus dumicola Simon, 1906 stat. res. from Venezuela, and A. virginea (Kraus, 1955) stat. res., comb. nov. from El Salvador. We transfer Acanthoctenus mammifer to Viracucha mammifer (Mello-Leitão, 1939) comb. nov., from Brazil. Acanthoctenus maculatus Petrunkevitch, 1925 and Gephyroctenus kolosvaryi Caporiacco, 1947 are considered species inquirendae in Acanthocteninae and Ctenidae, respectively, and A. obauratus Simon, 1906 and A. rubrotaeniatus Mello-Leitão, 1947 are considered incertae sedis in Acanthocteninae and Acantheinae, respectively. We also describe for the first time the female of Acanthoctenus spiniger Keyserling, 1877, the type species of the genus. We provide illustrations of male and female diagnostic characters, genitalia, habitus, and measurements to support the genus re-description and further identification of its species. We yield a distributional map of the specimens recorded and the description of the natural history of Acanthoctenus manauara sp. nov.
