In Memoriam: Elżbieta Kędelska (16 March 1949 – 10 November 2014) Throughout her professional life, Elżbieta Kędelska (1949–2014) was associated with the Institute of Slavic Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences. She made a substantial contribution to research on the history of Polish dictionary-making. Her work was focused on Polish and Slavic linguistics, mainly the history of Latin-Polish and Latin-Czech lexicography, comparative lexicography and issues of sixteenth-century Polish lexis. She also transcribed the 1532 and 1544 Latin-Polish manuscripts by Bartholomeus de Bydgostia – the most outstanding Polish lexicographer of the first half of the sixteenth century, and co-authored the recent reversed Polish-Latin edition of Bartholemeus’ dictionary.Wspomnienie. Skupiała się na językoznawstwie polskim i słowiańskim: głównie historii łacińsko-polskiej i łacińsko-czeskiej leksykografii, komparatystyce leksykograficznej oraz zagadnieniach XVI-wiecznej leksyki polskiej. Odczytywała łacińsko-polskie rękopisy z lat 1532 i 1544 autorstwa Bartłomieja z Bydgoszczy – najwybitniejszego leksykografa polskiego pierwszej połowy XVI wieku. Jest współautorką obecnej edycji Słownika Bartłomieja w odwróconej, polsko-łacińskiej wersji językowej.

The essay was written to mark the 25th anniversary of the Slavic Institute named after Jan Stanislav SAS (Bratislava). The Institute was founded to conduct interdisciplinary research on the relationships of the Slovak language and culture with other Slavic languages and cultures, as well as to study the Slovak-Latin, Slovak-Hungarian, and Slovak-German cultural and linguistic interactions in ancient times and the Middle Ages. The article introduces the main milestones in the formation and development of the Institute, its employees, the directions of their scientific work, and their significant publications. The main areas of research of the Slavic Institute (initially the Slavic Cabinet) cover linguistics (lexicography, history of language), history, folklore, cultural studies, musicology, and textology. Much attention is paid to the annotated translation of foreign religious texts into Slovak. A valuable contribution of the Institute to Slavic Studies is the creation of a database of Cyrillic and Latin handwritten and printed texts related to the Byzantine-Slavic tradition in Slovakia.

The article is devoted to the study of the scientific and pedagogical activities of the famous Slavist A. N. Yasinsky in the last – Moscow-Minsk – period of his life based on the materials of the Belarusian archives. Revolutionary events of 1917–1921 forced him, like many other representatives of the capital’s intelligentsia, to look for work in new provincial universities. Since 1922 he has been teaching at the Belarusian State University, becoming one of the founders of Belarusian Medieval and Slavic studies. In 1928 he was elected an academician of the newly created Belarusian Academy of Sciences, where he continued his studies of both the Czech Middle Ages and the history of Belarus in the Middle Ages. However, external circumstances did not allow A. N. Yasinsky to create his own scientific school in Belarus, and his research of the 1920’s remained little known to specialists.

The article offers a review on the history of Slavic studies at St. Petersburg and Greifswald universities from the era of Peter the Great to present day. The role of Professor Lyudmila Verbitskaya is highlighted who always actively supported the activities of the Department of Slavic Philology (for example, she approved the initiative to create a department of Ukrainian studies in the early 2000s). Thanks Verbitskaya, St. Petersburg University was historically recognized as the first university in Russia founded by Peter the Great in 1724, which was proven by archival materials stored in Greifswald. Peter the Great, in the assembly hall of the University of Greifswald in September 1712, at a meeting of the Academic Council received a proposal from the President of the German Academy of Sciences Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz on the establishment of a university in St. Petersburg with a European status. The status of the first university was officially recognized by a decree of the Government of the Russian Fed- eration in 1999 when the 275th anniversary of the founding of St. Petersburg State University was celebrated. As the Rector of St. Petersburg University, Verbitskaya in 2006 concluded an inter-university agreement with the Rector of the University of Greifswald Professor Jürgen Kohler. Slavic scholars and professors from St. Petersburg and Greifswald Universities collaborate closely. One of the active pedagogical and scientific areas of such cooperation is Slavic studies, which have long combined the efforts of Russian and German philologists.

Dr. Zita Virginija Šimėnaitė (1950–2016)Dr. Zita Šimėnaitė passed away on the 1st of August, 2016. She was a researcher who made a great contribution to the still developing field of Lithuanian lexicography. Between 2005 and 2014, she conducted work of the Lexicographical Centre in the Institute of the Lithuanian Language in Vilnius. Her academic and intellectual life was devoted to her two great passions: collaborating with other linguists in creation of new scientific dictionaries of the Lithuanian language, and artistic photography. She made a valuable contribution to the great dictionary of the Lithuanian language (Lietuvių kalbos žodynas; LKŽ) via enriching files, editing and developing numerous entries, as well as preparing an electronic version of the dictionary (www.lkz.lt). She co-authored the phraseological dictionary of the Lithuanian language (2002) and the dictionary for learners of the Lithuanian language (2000, second edition 2010). She conducted many projects in the field of monolingual and translational lexicography. She also popularized ideas and work of Lithuanian lexicographers during symposia and conferences in her home country and abroad. She actively participated in the scientific exchange and cooperation between the Institute of the Lithuanian Language and the Institute of Slavic Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. Dr Zita Virginija Šimėnaitė (1950–2016)Dnia 1 sierpnia 2016 r. zmarła dr Zita Šimėnaitė, badaczka mająca wielkie zasługi dla pomnażania dorobku leksykografii litewskiej. Od 2005 do 2014 r. kierowała pracami Centrum Leksykograficznego Instytutu Języka Litewskiego w Wilnie. Swoje życie poświęciła realizacji dwóch wielkich pasji: tworzeniu we współpracy z innymi lingwistami naukowych słowników języka litewskiego oraz fotografii artystycznej. Wniosła cenny wkład w uzupełnianie kartoteki, opracowanie licznych haseł i redagowanie wielkiego słownika języka litewskiego (Lietuvių kalbos žodynas; LKŽ) oraz przygoto­wanie jego wersji elektronicznej (www.lkz.lt). Współtworzyła słownik frazeologiczny języka litewskiego (2002) oraz słownik do nauki języka litewskiego (2000, drugie wydanie 2010). Zrealizowała wiele projektów z zakresu leksykografii jednojęzycznej i przekładowej; przybliżała koncepcje i dzieła litewskich leksykografów na sympozjach w kraju i za granicą, uczestniczyła w wymianie naukowej między Instytutem Języka Litewskiego a Instytutem Slawistyki PAN.

In memoriam: Aina Blinkena (5.09.1929 – 22.11.2017)Professor Aina Blinkena passed away on 22 November 2017. Upon her graduation from the Latvian State University in 1953, she began working for the Institute of Language and Literature of the Latvian SSR Academy of Sciences (today: the Institute of the Latvian Language of the University of Latvia), which became her only permanent workplace. Starting her work as a junior research associate and later – a deputy director and a full member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences, Aina Blinkena shaped the linguistic thought in Latvia for almost fifty years. Aina Blinkena pursued broad interests in the history of language and linguistics, as well as morphology and syntax. She also devoted attention to the aspects of language culture and terminology. Her most important monographs are Latviešu interpunkcija (Latvian punctuation) and Latviešu rakstības attīstība (The development of written Latvian, co-authored by Anna Bergmane). The output of her lifelong work was collected in two volumes of her studies entitled Caur vārdu birzi (Through the forest of words, 2014, 2017). In recognition of her scholarly work and social activity, Aina Blinkena was awarded the highest Latvian distinction – the Order of the Three Stars. Aina Blinkena (5.09.1929 – 22.11.2017). Po ukończeniu studiów na Łotewskim Uniwersytecie Państwowym w 1953 roku, rozpoczęła pracę w Instytucie Literatury i Językoznawstwa Akademii Nauk Łotewskiej Socjalistycznej Republiki Radzieckiej (obecnie Instytut Języka Łotewskiego Łotewskiej Akademii Nauk), z którym pozostała związana przez cały czas pracy naukowej, najpierw na stanowisku asystenta, a później – jako jego wicedyrektor i członek rzeczywisty Łotewskiej Akademii Nauk. Aina Blinkena miała ogromny wpływ na rozwój łotewskiej myśli językoznawczej w ciągu ostatniego półwiecza. Jej szerokie zainteresowania naukowe obejmowały zarówno historię języka i językoznawstwa, jak i morfologię i składnię. Zajmowała się także kwestiami kultury języka oraz terminologią. Najważniejsze monografie Profesor Blinkeny to Latviešu interpunkcija (Interpunkcja łotewska) i Latviešu rakstības attīstība (Rozwój łotewskiego języka pisanego; współautorka: Anna Bergmane). Jej najważniejsze prace ukazały się w dwutomowym wydaniu dzieł zebranych, zatytułowanym Caur vārdu birzi (Przez las słów). W uznaniu jej osiągnięć w pracy naukowej i zaangażowania w działalność społeczną Aina Blinkena została uhonorowana Orderem Trzech Gwiazd, najwyższym łotewskim odznaczeniem państwowym.

A Volume of Henadzʹ Tsykhun’s Selected Studies as a Testimony to His Wide-Ranging Interests in Slavic Linguistics This article is a review of Henadzʹ Tsykhun’s volume of selected studies entitled Prastora movy: Moŭnyia suviazi: Historyia sloŭ: vybranyia pratsy [Language Space, Language Connections, History of Words: Selected Studies]. The reviewed work describes issues of language contact, sociolinguistics, etymology and terminology. The volume concerns widely understood Slavic studies in both diachronic and synchronic aspects, with a special emphasis on the Belarusian language. Wybór publikacji Hienadzia Cychuna wyrazem wszechstronności zainteresowań slawistycznych autora  Niniejsza publikacja stanowi recenzję monografii Hienadzia Cychuna pt. Прастора мовы. Моўныя сувязі. Гісторыя слоў: выбраныя працы [Przestrzeń języka. Związki językowe. Historia słów. Wybrane opracowania]. Recenzowana praca opisuje zagadnienia kontaktów językowych, socjolingwistyki, etymologii oraz terminologii. W tekście przedstawiono okoliczności przejęcia spuścizn przez PAN Archiwum w Warszawie Oddział w Poznaniu, omówiono materiały dotyczące Archiwum Państwowego w Poznaniu i działalności autorów spuścizn w okresie pracy w tymże archiwum. Materials regarding the history of the State Archive in Poznań in the light of the legacies from the collection of the Archive of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, Poznań branch The article presents the legacies of four employees of the State Archive in Poznań, kept in the collection of the Archive of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, Poznań branch, namely the directors of the office: Kazimierz Kaczmarczyk, Czesław Skopowski, and Jan Szajbel, as well as Kazimiera Chojnacka, the head of the Archive Materials Preservation Lab. The text presents the circumstances in which these legacies were taken over by the Archive of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Poznań branch, and discusses the materials concerning the State Archive in Poznań and the activity of the authors of the legacies while they had worked in this archive.

Autor omawia źródła genealogiczne, zgromadzone i wytworzone przez pasjonatów genealogii. Jednym z nich był Włodzimierz Dworzaczek(1905-1988), którego spuścizna, zawierająca około trzysta tysięcy wypisów, nazwana „Tekami Dworzaczka”, została przekazana do Biblioteki Kórnickiej Polskiej Akademii Nauk i wydana w postaci elektronicznej, a także umieszczona w Sieci.. Podobną pracę wykonał Wojciech Skowroński (1904-1978), lekarz okulista, zainteresowany historią rodzin wielkopolskich, nie tylko szlacheckich. Jego notatki i opracowania trafiły do Biblioteki Poznańskiego Towarzystwa Przyjaciół Nauk. Skany tych materiałów jako „Archiwum dra Wojciecha Józefa Skowrońskiego” zostały umieszczone w Internecie na stronie Wielkopolskiej Biblioteki Cyfrowej.. Istotną z punktu widzenia badań genealogicznych spuściznę pozostawili tez m.in. Sławomir Leitgeber i Stanisław Karwowski. Using private sources for genealogy studies The author discusses the problem of genealogy sources, which have been gathered and created by genealogy enthusiasts. Włodzimierz Dworzaczek (1905-1988) was one of such enthusiasts. His legacy (about 300,000 extracts), also referred to as “the Dworzaczek Files” was donated to the Kórnik Library of the Polish Academy of Sciences, published in an electronic version and also made available online. Wojciech Skowroński (1904-1978) has comparable achievements. He was an ophthalmologist, interested in the history of Greater Poland families – not only those of noble origin. His notes and reviews were included in the collection of the Poznań Society of Friends of Learning Library. “The Archive of Dr. Wojciech Skowroński” (scans of these documents) was made available online on the Greater Poland Digital Library website. Also Sławomir Leitgeber and Stanisław Karwowski left the legacy of a similar genealogical value.
