Results of Double-Theodolite Observations at Bishop, Cal., in Connection with the “Bishop-Wave” Phenomena *

A double-theodolite pilot-balloon observation program was inaugurated at the Bishop, California, Weather Bureau station in order to obtain data on the actual air currents in that area. The results of the observations for the period from February through May 1951 are discussed. Comparisons between single- and double-theodolite computations are shown. The mean actual ascension rates are compared for each month, and the mean ascension rates for the entire period are compared with the standard assumed single-thodolite ascension rates. Relations between the mean actual ascension rates and the local topography, the elevation of the balloon, the direction and speed of the general upper-level wind are shown. Several examples are given showing the existence of the standing (“Bishop” or “Sierra”)-wave pattern in the double-theodolite data. In some cases, the location of the up and downdrafts as well as the horizontal wave length can be determined.

SummaryDuring acute malaria infection, platelets in human platelet-rich plasma are hypersensitive to the addition of ADP between 1.0 uM and 5.0 uM, or adrenaline 0.11 uM as aggregating agents. The mean maximum aggregation amplitude (as % of light transmission) obtained from 8 subjects in response to added ADP (1.0 uM), 39.8 ± 27 (1SD), was significantly greater than the value in 6 controls (5.2±6.7 (1SD); t = 3, 51 P <0.005). A similar pattern of response was obtained with higher ADP concentrations (2.4,4.5 or 5.0 uM) in 22 patients and 20 control subjects (89.9±14.9% vs 77.8±16.5% (1SD) t = 2.45, P <0.02). Addition of 4.5 uM ADP to patient PRP usually evoked only a single aggregation wave (fused primary and secondary waves) while the typical primary and secondary wave pattern was usually obtained from controls.Mean plasma B-thromboglobulin (BTG) concentration in 7 patients (208.3 ± 15.6 ng/ml) was significantly higher than the value in 6 control subjects (59.2±15.7 ng/ml; t = 13.44, P <0.002).

Objective: To evaluate the neonatal morbidity due to congenital malformations in the city of Petrolina-PE, from 2008 to 2013. Methods: A descriptive study with data from the Information System on Live Births (Sinasc). The analyzes were carried out through frequency distribution and measures of central tendency and dispersion. The associations were tested by the Pearson and Kruskal Wallis chi-square tests. Significance was set at 5% and 95% confidence. Results: 436 cases of congenital malformations were recorded in the study period, with 2011 being the highest occurrence year. The mothers of the newborns were young (25.2 years old), single, upper level of education and household. In general multiparous, with single gestation, vaginal delivery and performed up to six prenatal visits. The newborns were males, at 39 weeks or more of gestation and with normal weight (> = 2500g). The malformations of the musculoskeletal system were the most frequent followed by the genitourinary system. Congenital malformations were especially associated with neonatal characteristics such as gender and weight. In all causes the mean weight was greater than 2500g (p <0.05). The causes of malformation of greater occurrence in both sexes were osteomuscular (p <0.05). The aspects of the mother did not present significant differences in the present study (p> 0.05). Conclusion: The present study evidenced relevant aspects in the occurrence of morbidities due to congenital malformations, directing to a greater attention the occurrence of these diseases especially in relation to the newborn.

In the 14th ICCE, Battjes (1974) showed that a single similarity parameter only, embodying both the effects of slope angle and incident wave steepness, was important for many aspects of waves breaking on impermeable slopes, and suggested to call it the "Iribarren number", denoted by "Ir". Ahrens and McCartney (1975) verified the usefulness of Ir to describe run-up and stability on rough permeable slopes. Since then, many researchers applied Ir to characterize and to develop formulae for the design of breakwaters and to verify their stability. On the other hand, depending on their typology, breakwaters reflect, dissipate, transmit, and radiate incident wave energy. Partial standing wave patterns are likely to occur at all types of breakwater, thus playing an important role in defining the wave regime in front of, near (seaward and leeward), and inside the breakwater. The characteristics of the porous medium, relative grain size D/L and relative width, Aeq/L2, are relevant magnitudes in that wave pattern (Vilchez et al. 2016), being D the grain diameter, L the wave length and Aeq the porous area per unit section under the mean water level. Aeq/L2 is a scattering parameter controlling the averaged transformation of the wave inside the porous section of the structure. For a vertical porous breakwater (Type A), Aeq is simply B · h, and for a constant depth, the scattering parameter is reduced to B/L, which is the relative breakwater width.

Abstract. A 21-yr record is presented of surface mass balance measurements along the K-transect. The series covers the period 1990–2011. Data are available at eight sites along a transect over an altitude range of 380–1850 m at approximately 67° N in West Greenland. The surface mass balance gradient is on average 3.8 × 10−3 m w.e. m−1, and the mean equilibrium line altitude is 1553 m a.s.l. Only the lower three sites within 10 km of the margin up to an elevation of 700 m experience a significant increasing trend in the ablation over the entire period. Although lateral axial bending is widespread for the locomotion of ectothermic vertebrates, the axial motor patterns of terrestrial taxa are known only for a limited number of species and behaviors. Furthermore, the extent to which the trunk and tail of ectothermic tetrapods have similar motor patterns is poorly documented. We therefore recorded the activity of the epaxial muscles in the trunk and tail of sand-swimming Mojave fringe-toed lizards (Uma scoparia) to determine whether this specialized behavior has features of the motor pattern that differ from those of diverse ectothermic vertebrates. Muscle activity during initial sand-swimming was a standing-wave pattern in the trunk and tail. Next, the hind limbs moved alternately and the caudofemoralis muscles and nearby axial muscle in the trunk and tail had similar long-duration electromyographic bursts, whereas the anterior trunk had shorter, more frequent electromyographic bursts. The final tail burial involved a traveling wave of posteriorly propagated axial muscle activity within localized regions of the tail. With increased temperature (from 22 to 40 degrees C), the mean frequencies of axial oscillations increased from approximately 7 to 21 Hz, and the greatest value (33 Hz) was nearly twice the maximal limb cycling frequency during running. The mean burial time at the lowest temperature (3.8 s) was nearly twice that for a 10 degrees C higher temperature. For the axial electromyograms, a decrease in temperature of 18 degrees C more than doubled the electromyographic and cycle durations, whereas the duty factors and intersegmental phase lags changed only slightly with temperature.

The KCS model is employed for the numerical simulations to investigate the wave breaking phenomena of the bow and shoulder wave. RANS approach coupled with high resolution VOF technique is used to resolve the free surface. In order to study the speed effects on the phenomena of ship wave breaking, four different speeds, i.e. Fr = 0.26, 0.30, 0.32, 0.35, are investigated in calm water. Predicted resistance and wave patterns under Fr = 0.26 are validated with the available experiment data, and good agreement is achieved. For the Fr = 0.26 case, the wave pattern is steady, and the alternate variation of vorticity appear near the free surface is associated with the wake field. The breaking wave phenomena can be observed when the Froude number is over 0.32 and the Fr = 0.35 case shows most violent breaking bow wave. For the Fr = 0.35 case, the process of overturning and breaking of bow wave is observed clearly, and at the tail of bow wave, some breaking features of free surface are also captured. The reconnection of the initial plunger with the free surface results in a pair of counter-rotating vortex that is responsible for the second plunger and scar.


It has long been known that in the immediate vicinity of the critical state, many substances exhibit a strong and characteristic opalescence. In recent years, the phenomenon has been studied by Travers and Usher in the case of carefully purified CS 2 , SO 2 , and ether, by S. Young, by F. B. Young in the case of ether, and in a quantitative manner by Kammerlingh Onnes and Keesom in the case of ethylene. An explanation of the phenomenon on thermodynamic principles as due to the accidental deviations of density arising in the substance was put forward by Smoluchowski. He obtained an expression for the mean fluctuation of density in terms of the compressibility of the substance, and later, Einstein applied Maxwell’s equations of the electromagnetic field to obtain an expression for the intensity of the light scattered in consequence of such deviations of density. He showed that the fraction α of the incident energy scattered in the substance per unit volume is 8 π 3 /27 RT β ( μ 2 – 1) 2 ( μ 2 + 2) 2 /N λ 4 (1) In this, R and N are the gas constant and Avogadro’s number per grammolecule, β is the isothermal compressibility of the substance, μ is the refractive index and λ is the wave-length of the incident light. Keesom tested this formula over a range of 2·35° above the critical point of ethylene and found good agreement except very close to the critical point.


The accuracy of calibration, as already mentioned, was checked against CO 2 and water vapour bands. With the quartz prism the instrument could be set to show the 2·7 μ CO 2 bands resolved and within about 0·003μ of their known wave-lengths*; i. e., within 4 cm -1 . With the fluorite prism, resolution at 2·7 μ was inferior, but the structure of the water vapour band centred at 6·3 μ provided about 20 points for the checking of wave-lengths. Here the maximum discrepancy was 5 cm -1 and the mean discrepancy about 1·5 cm -1 , The wave-number error, therefore, is not libels to exceed 5 cm -1 in any part of the range investigated. The fraction of radiation transmitted by a specimen was measured to three figures and a mean of two or three observations at least taken for each wave-length setting. The accuracy varies from specimen to specimen and from point to point throughout the spectrum, depending on the magnitude of the galvanometer deflexions obtainable. The error is, however, nowhere likely to be greater than 0·01 and for much of the work is of the order of 0·002.

The aim of this study was to describe suicide time trends in Brazil from 1980 to 2005. The data were obtained from the National Mortality Information System and the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). Suicides rates were calculated for the entire period for the country as a whole and the 26 States and Federal District. Annual increases or decreases in mortality rates were also estimated using Prais-Winsten generalized linear regression. The mean suicide rate was 4.12 per 100,000 inhabitants (6.45/100,000 in men and 1.80/100,000 in women). The study showed an increasing suicide trend in men (+1.41% per year, 95%CI: 1.00;1.23) and a decreasing trend in women (-0.53% per year, 95%CI: -0.04;-1.02). Suicide rates increased with age. In general, for all age groups and for both genders, the highest rates were in São Paulo and in the States of the South and Central-West regions.

Recent discoveries of MHD wave motions in the solar corona done with EUV imaging telescopes onboard SOHO and TRACE provide an observational basis for the MHD seismology of the corona. Measuring the properties of MHD waves and oscillations (periods, wavelengths, amplitudes, temporal and spatial signatures), combined with theoretical modeling of the wave phenomena, allow us to determine values of the mean parameters of the corona (the magnetic field strength, transport coefficients, etc.). As an example, we consider post-flare decaying oscillations of loops, observed with TRACE (14th July 1998 at 12:55 UT). An analysis of the oscillations shows that they are quasi-harmonic, with a period of about 265 s, and quickly decaying with the decay time of about 14.5 min. The period of oscillations allows us to determine the Alfvén speed in the oscillating loop about 770 km/s. This value can be used for deduction of the value of the magnetic field in the loop (giving 10-30 G). The decay time, in the assumption that the decay is caused by viscous (or resistive) dissipation, gives us the Reynolds number of 105.3-6.1 (or the Lundquist number of 105.0-5.8).
