The Feasibility of a Helmet-Mounted Sight as a Control Device

The purpose of this research was to investigate the practicality of a helmet-mounted sight as an operational element in a quick-reaction bore-sighting system. A three-phase experimental program was conducted to determine the human capabilities with the helmet-mounted sight. In a laboratory environment sighting accuracies were obtained on both static and moving targets. Field test data were obtained during high-speed, low-altitude flights. The series of tests indicated that the accuracy of the sighting process can be expected to vary between a fraction of a degree and four degrees depending on target angular rate and the target sighting angle.

This article describes a study conducted to determine the effects of long duration, random vibration—characteristic of low-altitude high-speed (LAHS) flight aircraft—on human performance, physiological, biodynamic, and tolerance responses. Ten subjects experienced 0.10, 0.15, and 0.20 RMS g with a shaped power spectral density from 1 to 12 cps while engaging in LAHS control tasks. Simulation runs were of 5 hours duration, with the centermost 4 hours under dynamic conditions. Results of this experiment are related to those of other studies which had the same general objectives in order to provide a brief review and summary about what is known regarding human capabilities for LAHS flight.

BLDC motors are characterized by electronic commutation, which is performed by using an electric three-phase inverter. The direct control system of the BLDC motor consists of double loops; including the inner-loop for current regulating and outer-loop for speed control. The operation of the current controller requires feedback of motor currents; the conventional current controller uses two current sensors on the ac side of the inverter to measure the currents of two phases, while the third current would be accordingly calculated. These two sensors should have the same characteristics, to achieve balanced current measurements. It should be noted that the sensitivity of these sensors changes with time. In the case of one sensor fails, both of them must be replaced. To overcome this problem, it is preferable to use one sensor instead of two. The proposed control system is based on a deadbeat predictive controller, which is used to regulate the DC current of the BLDC motor. Such a controller can be considered as digital controller mode, which has fast response, high precision and can be easily implemented with microprocessor. The proposed control system has been simulated using Matlab software, and the system is tested at a different operating condition such as low speed and high speed.

In order to effectively suppress horizontal vibration of the ultra-high-speed elevator car system. Firstly, considering the nonlinearity of guide shoe, parameter uncertainties, and uncertain external disturbances of the elevator car system, a more practical active control model for horizontal vibration of the 4-DOF ultra-high-speed elevator car system is constructed and the rationality of the established model is verified by real elevator experiment. Secondly, a predictive sliding mode controller based on adaptive fuzzy (PSMC-AF) is proposed to reduce the horizontal vibration of the car system, the predictive sliding mode control law is achieved by optimizing the predictive sliding mode performance index. Simultaneously, in order to decrease the influence of uncertainty of the car system, a fuzzy logic system (FLS) is designed to approximate the compound uncertain disturbance term (CUDT) on-line. Furthermore, the continuous smooth hyperbolic tangent function (HTF) is introduced into the sliding mode switching term to compensate the fuzzy approximation error. The adaptive laws are designed to estimate the error gain and slope parameter, so as to increase the robustness of the system. Finally, numerical simulations are conducted on some representative guide rail excitations and the results are compared to the existing solution and passive system. The analysis has confirmed the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed control method.

There is a necessity to design a three-phase squirrel cage induction motor (SCIM) for high-speed applications with a larger air gap length in order to limit the distortion of air gap flux density, the thermal expansion of stator and rotor teeth, centrifugal forces, and the magnetic pull. To that effect, a larger air gap length lowers the power factor, efficiency, and torque density of a three-phase SCIM. This should inform motor design engineers to take special care during the design process of a three-phase SCIM by selecting an air gap length that will provide optimal performance. This paper presents an approach that would assist with the selection of an optimal air gap length (OAL) and optimal capacitive auxiliary stator winding (OCASW) configuration for a high torque per ampere (TPA) three-phase SCIM. A genetic algorithm (GA) assisted by finite element analysis (FEA) is used in the design process to determine the OAL and OCASW required to obtain a high torque per ampere without compromising the merit of achieving an excellent power factor and high efficiency for a three-phase SCIM. The performance of the optimized three-phase SCIM is compared to unoptimized machines. The results obtained from FEA are validated through experimental measurements. Owing to the penalty functions related to the value of objective and constraint functions introduced in the genetic algorithm model, both the FEA and experimental results provide evidence that an enhanced torque per ampere three-phase SCIM can be realized for a large OAL and OCASW with high efficiency and an excellent power factor in different working conditions.

Women residing at high altitudes deliver infants of lower birth weight than at sea level. Birth weight correlates with placental system A-mediated amino acid transport capacity, and severe environmental hypoxia reduces system A activity in isolated trophoblast and the mouse placenta. However, the effect of high altitude on human placental amino acid transport remains unknown. We hypothesized that microvillous membrane (MVM) system A and system L amino acid transporter activity is lower in placentas of women living at high altitude compared with low-altitude controls. Placentas were collected at term from healthy pregnant women residing at high altitude (HA; >2,500 m; n = 14) or low altitude (LA; <1,700 m; n = 14) following planned, unlabored cesarean section. Birth weight, but not placenta weight, was 13% lower in HA pregnancies (2.88 ± 0.11 kg) compared with LA (3.30 ± 0.07 kg, P < 0.01). MVM erythropoietin receptor abundance, determined by immunoblot, was greater in HA than in LA placentas, consistent with lower placental oxygen levels at HA. However, there was no effect of altitude on MVM system A or L activity, determined by Na+-dependent [14C]methylaminoisobutyric acid uptake and [3H]leucine uptake, respectively. MVM abundance of glucose transporters (GLUTs) 1 and 4 and basal membrane GLUT4 were also similar in LA and HA placentas. Low birth weights in the neonates of women residing at high altitude are not a consequence of reduced placental amino acid transport capacity. These observations are in general agreement with studies of IUGR babies at low altitude, in which MVM system A activity is downregulated only in growth-restricted babies with significant compromise. NEW & NOTEWORTHY Babies born at high altitude are smaller than at sea level. Birth weight is dependent on growth in utero and, in turn, placental nutrient transport. We determined amino acid transport capacity in placentas collected from women resident at low and high altitude. Altitude did not affect system A amino acid transport across the syncytiotrophoblast microvillous membrane, suggesting that impaired placental amino acid transport does not contribute to reduced birth weight in this high-altitude population.
