The purpose of this study was to examine the degree withdrawal patterns of undergraduate music education majors, with a specific focus on the individual experiences of students withdrawing from the major. Data from recently withdrawn students ( N = 14) were assembled using a qualitative methodology that included semistructured interviews, questionnaires, researcher journals, and meetings with experienced researchers. The data were analyzed and coded, generating a number of categories for discussion and analysis. Students’ experiences during college were diverse, with concerns focused on the applied music component of the degree surfacing as important to many students. The reasons given for withdrawal from the music education program also were diverse, including dismissal from the applied music studio, erosion of personal confidence as a musician, realizations about their feelings toward music versus their feelings about teaching in general as it related to their personal career goals, and personal life issues. Following withdrawal from the music education curriculum, all interviewed students reported that they remained actively involved in music in some way. Implications of these results are discussed in relation to individual experiences and the function of those experiences within the context of current models of student persistence.

Deciding whether certain factors should be considered drivers of innovation in construction firms is crucial in terms of improving their performance and survival in an environment that is changing by leaps and bounds. Throughout the years, construction companies have been considered to be traditional and without the tendency to innovate. However, several studies have confirmed that this perception of the sector is evolving and that successful instruments from other industries are gradually being adapted for the benefit of the industry. The objective of this paper is therefore to investigate the potential factors affecting the performance of these organizations. Eighteen factors related to the individual, group, and organizational levels were identified through a review of the literature and an instrument developed that was validated by experienced professionals. A questionnaire was sent to 103 people working in the sector at the national level to obtain their views. The results of the classification analysis indicate that “technology and equipment” and “software acquisition” are considered the two most significant factors. In addition, these 18 factors can be classified into 7 groups: (i) internal drivers of innovation; (ii) innovation within the organization; (iii) technological innovation; (iv) technological links with the environment; (v) external drivers of innovation; (vi) innovation in processes; (vii) a culture of innovation in the company. Innovation in processes has the highest level of impact. This research deepens the current understanding of the factors at different organizational levels that must be highlighted in the implementation of an R&D system in order for companies to improve their performance and survival in future processes.

This paper discusses the concept of “motivation” in relation to the process of music education. The most effective ways of teaching are highlighted, which allow achieving a high level of motivation among students learning music, among which the method of active learning is recognized as the most effective for achieving this goal. The system of various motives that induce the student to educational activity is considered. Particular attention is paid to the process of formation and development of motives and needs; emphasis is placed on the importance of a personal approach to learning, taking into account the individual characteristics and abilities of each student. The personality of the teacher and the nature of his relationship with students are recognized as one of the fundamental factors affecting the success of training. The main pedagogical conditions that contribute to the increase of the motivational sphere of students are highlighted, such as: a personal approach, the creation of a special motivational atmosphere, the aspiration for the transition to self-education and self-development, the choice of the most effective forms of work. The conclusion is made about the necessary presence of internal motivation for the process of learning a subject (in this case, music) for productive educational activity. The problems in the field of music education are revealed, which consists in the lack of psychological knowledge among music teachers about the specifics of the formation of the motivational sphere of students.

We actualize the process of formation of career strategies for students in conditions of self-management. Student self-management is considered from the standpoint of social and cultural activity and is defined as a special form of initiative, independent, responsible public activity of students aimed at solving important life issues, developing their social activity, focused on interaction with the administration and public organizations in order to optimize the activities of the educational institution and improving the process of professionalization. Formation of career stra- tegies is the career path planning process, it includes assessment of the initial level of career readiness (career competence); designing an image of a future career (career goals) based on comparing the real career opportunities of students with the requirements of employers; as well as the construction of a personal brand and the construction of an algorithm to achieve the intended goals, taking into account the identified resources. Career strategies for young people can be described as promising career orientations, designed according to personal career potential, competence level, and taking into account the specifics of career realization in conditions of social uncertainty. We substantiate that social and cultural activities have a sufficient arsenal of technologies that allow to optimize this process, and social and cultural activity is considered as a branch of pedagogy, which is aimed at social and cultural integration of the individual.

In the study described here, we used an open-ended written essay to identify the factors that lead students to become music teachers. Ninety music education majors were given the instructions to indicate in their own words their earliest remembrances of when they considered becoming a music teacher, including age, place, who was with them, how they felt, their thoughts at the time, and any other aspects they considered important. Essays were analyzed and classified according to these areas of interest; additionally as a more qualitative assessment, total responses were analyzed to discern some of the nuances evidenced in individual responses. Results indicated that the age at which the decision was made and influential people in their lives were the most important factors affecting these subjects' decision to become a music teacher. The decision was vividly remembered, with school music teachers exerting the primary influence. Of the subjects, 76% decided to become a music teacher before entering a teacher preparatory program. Students who did not decide until they were of college age remained ambivalent about their choice.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to discover the contextual factors affecting the development of digital library education (DLE) in Vietnam and to determine how those factors are enabling or hindering its development.Design/methodology/approachBased upon the literature and the theories of Fullan (2007), Nowlen (1988) and Rogers (2003), an initial model of contextual factors that were potentially affecting DLE development in Vietnam was developed. The model was then tested using a qualitative methodology involving interviews and focus groups with key stakeholders, along with the gathering of documentary evidence. The data were then analysed using the interactive model of Miles et al. (2014), and the initial model was then revised.FindingsThe initial model allowed for the depiction of potential factors, both internal and external, along with some relationships between the factors. Based on the data analysis, a revised model was developed composed of seven major contextual factors that were enabling and/or hindering DLE development in the Vietnamese context. These are grouped into three categories: external factors – government, IT infrastructure and social and cultural values; internal factors – stakeholders’ attitudes, DLE characteristics and the personal and organisational nexus; and change agents, which is both an internal and external factor. These factors had different levels of influence on DLE development and are inter-related.Originality/valueNo prior study has looked at contextual factors affecting DLE development in a developing country such as Vietnam.

AbstractPotential factors affecting the occurrence of filamentous algae include the morphometry of water bodies, the type of substrate and physicochemical conditions of the habitat. This study attempts to describe the individual filamentous algae species recorded in Poland, taking into account the trophic and ecological characteristics based on our own research and available literature data. Filamentous algae attached to the substrate as well as those forming free-floating patches (loose or dense mats) and crusts occur in all types of water bodies. Among the representatives of filamentous algae species,

The purpose of this study was to examine the beliefs of applied music faculty on desirable traits of prospective music education majors. Respondents ( N = 326), who were sampled from 73 National Association of Schools of Music–accredited institutions in the United States, completed a survey instrument developed to determine the characteristics of the admissions process at their institutions, their perceptions of various professional dispositions for entering music education majors, and their perceptions of various selection criteria for entering music education majors. Results indicated that music education faculty hold little or no responsibility for admissions decisions and that admissions decisions are primarily made by applied music faculty at many institutions. They also reported that “demonstrates a passion for music” and “is responsible and dependable” are the most desirable professional dispositions for entering freshmen music education majors and that “desire to be a music educator” and “teachability” are the most important selection criteria used when admitting freshmen music education majors. Free-response data suggest that applied faculty members consider various facets during the admissions process, including a prospective music education major’s personal characteristics, musical characteristics, academic characteristics, and prior teaching/leadership experience. Implications for music educators are discussed, and suggestions for future research are proposed.
