As the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic spreads around the world, the demand for imaging examinations increases accordingly. The value of conventional chest radiography (CCR) remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to investigate the diagnostic value of CCR in the detection of COVID-19 through a comparative analysis of CCR and CT. This study included 49 patients with 52 CT images and chest radiographs of pathogen-confirmed COVID-19 cases and COVID-19-suspected cases that were found to be negative (non-COVID-19). The performance of CCR in detecting COVID-19 was compared to CT imaging. The major signatures that allowed for differentiation between COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 cases were also evaluated. Approximately 75% (39/52) of images had positive findings on the chest x-ray examinations, while 80.7% (42/52) had positive chest CT scans. The COVID-19 group accounted for 88.4% (23/26) of positive chest X-ray examinations and 96.1% (25/26) of positive chest CT scans. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of CCR for abnormal shadows were 88%, 80%, and 87%, respectively, for all patients. For the COVID-19 group, the accuracy of CCR was 92%. The primary signature on CCR was flocculent shadows in both groups. The shadows were primarily in the bi-pulmonary, which was significantly different from non-COVID-19 patients ( p = 0.008). The major CT finding of COVID-19 patients was ground-glass opacities in both lungs, while in non-COVID-19 patients, consolidations combined with ground-glass opacities were more common in one lung than both lungs ( p = 0.0001). CCR showed excellent performance in detecting abnormal shadows in patients with confirmed COVID-19. However, it has limited value in differentiating COVID-19 patients from non-COVID-19 patients. Through the typical epidemiological history, laboratory examinations, and clinical symptoms, combined with the distributive characteristics of shadows, CCR may be useful to identify patients with possible COVID-19. This will allow for the rapid identification and quarantine of patients.

Objective: Literature related to the imaging of COVID-19 pneumonia, its findings and contribution to diagnosis and its differences from adults are limited in pediatric patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate chest X-ray and chest CT findings in children with COVID-19 pneumonia. Methods: Chest X-ray findings of 59 pediatric patients and chest CT findings of 22 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19 pneumonia were evaluated retrospectively. Results: COVID-19 pneumonia was most commonly observed unilaterally and in lower zones of lungs in chest X-ray examinations. Bilateral and multifocal involvement (55%) was the most observed involvement in the CT examinations, as well as, single lesion and single lobe (27%) involvement were also detected. Pure ground-glass appearance was observed in 41%, ground-glass appearance and consolidation together was in 36%. While peripheral and central co-distribution of the lesions (55%) were frequently observed, the involvement of the lower lobes (69%) was significant. In four cases,the coexistence of multiple rounded multifocal ground-glass appearance and rounded consolidation were observed. Conclusion: COVID-19 pneumonia imaging findings may differ in the pediatric population from adults. In diagnosis, chest X-ray should be preferred, CT should be requested if there is a pathologic finding on radiography that merits further evaluation and if clinically indicated. Advances in knowledge: Radiological findings of COVID-19 observed in children may differ from adults. Chest X-ray should often be sufficient in children avoiding additional irradiation, chest CT needs only be done in cases of clinical necessity.

Pasiekęs kritinį dydį auglys, priklausomai nuo atsiradimo vietos, pasireiškia spaudimo į aplinkinius organus klinika. Neurilemomos dažniausiai atsiranda galūnėse 30–50 gyvenimo metais nepriklausomai nuo lyties. Klajoklio nervo neurilemoma yra nedažna patologija, o krūtininės klajoklio nervo dalies neurilemoma pasitaiko itin retai. Diagnozuojant svarbiausi yra radiologiniai tyrimo metodai. Gydymas – chirurginis auglio pašalinimas. Pateikiame krūtininės klajoklio nervo dalies neurilemomos, nustatytos 39 metų moteriai, klinikinį atvejį. Auglys aptiktas radiologiniais tyrimais (krūtinės rentgeno, kompiuterinės tomografijos ir tarpuplaučio magnetinio branduolių rezonanso), pašalintas naudojant vaizdo torakoskopinę (VATS) metodiką. Diagnozė galutinai patvirtinta histologiniu tyrimu. Background: Coronaviruses are a large family of RNA viruses, which range from the common cold virus to the causative agent of more severe diseases. Coronavirus was declared a pandemic in December 2019 in Wuhan, China. Iran has been an endemic zone for the spread of the coronavirus since the outset of this global epidemic and has remained among the countries largely affected by high rates of the disease. Objectives: The present study aimed to investigate the range of the chest computed tomography (CT) scan findings among the hospitalized patients with COVID-19 in Kermanshah, Iran during March-April 2020 to contribute to the accurate diagnosis of the infected patients. Methods: The sample population consisted of 286 hospitalized patients diagnosed with or suspected of the coronavirus disease. Chest CT-scan images and clinical data were reviewed, and their correlation was analyzed. Results: In total, 176 patients (61.53%) were male, and 110 (38.47%) were female. The mean age of the patients was 56 years. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) results showed that 35.31% of the cases had coronavirus, while the results were negative in 64.69% of the cases. In addition, the CT-scan findings indicated 77.27% abnormal and 22.73% normal chest CT-scans. Among the patients, 75.87% recovered completely, and 18.53% died. The major CT abnormalities were diffuse ground-glass opacification (35.66%), peripheral ground-glass opacification (bilateral; 21.33%), and a combination of diffuse and peripheral ground-glass lesions (18.88%). The consolidation lesion of one lobe was detected in 16 patients, and the consolidation lesion of more than one lobe was observed in 40 patients. Conclusions: According to the results, the most common chest CT-scan findings in COVID-19 include diffuse ground-glass opacification, peripheral ground-glass opacification (bilateral), central ground-glass opacification (bilateral), a combination of diffuse and peripheral ground-glass opacification, a combination of central and peripheral ground-glass opacification, the consolidation lesion of one lobe, and the consolidation lesion of more than one lobe. Furthermore, significant correlations were observed between the CT-scans and the main clinical symptoms, while no significant correlations were denoted between the chest CT-scan and PCR results.

Coronavirus disease, first detected in late 2019 (COVID-19), has spread fast throughout the world, leading to high mortality. This condition can be diagnosed using RT-PCR technique on nasopharyngeal and throat swabs with sensitivity values ranging from 30 to 70%. However, chest CT scans and X-ray images have been reported to have sensitivity values of 98 and 69%, respectively. The application of machine learning methods on CT and X-ray images has facilitated the accurate diagnosis of COVID-19. In this study, we reviewed studies which used machine and deep learning methods on chest X-ray images and CT scans for COVID-19 diagnosis and compared their performance. The accuracy of these methods ranged from 76% to more than 99%, indicating the applicability of machine and deep learning methods in the clinical diagnosis of COVID-19.

Objective: To observe the reliability of lung ultrasound in diagnosing pneumonia as compared to chest X-ray.Materials and Methods: This Prospective cohort study was carried out over a period of three months in the Paediatric Department of Benazir Bhutto Hospital Rawalpindi. One hundred patients, 2 months to 12 years of age were enrolled in the study. All the patients were subjected to chest X-ray and lung ultrasound within 12 hours of admission. Data was recorded on predesigned Performa and processed on SPSS version 25. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values were calculated for chest X-ray and lung ultrasound.Results: LUS was found to be more efficient in detecting consolidations (64 out of 100) as compared to CXR (50 out of 100). In 14 patients CXR was not able to detect consolidations but LUS detected the same. Fourteen patients in whom lung ultrasound was positive for consolidations but CXR was negative were subjected to CT chest. Out of these 14 CT scans, 11 were positive and 3 were negative for consolidations. Lung ultrasound was found to have a Sensitivity of 100%, the specificity of 92.30%, PPV 95.31%, NPV of 100%, and accuracy of 97% as compared to Sensitivity of 81%, the specificity of 100%, PPV 100%, NPV of 78% and accuracy of 89% for CXR in the diagnosis of pneumonia in children.Conclusion: Results from our study confirmed by many other studies on the same research question allow us to conclude that Lung ultrasound is a fast, low cost, reliable, radiation-free alternative to chest x-ray in the diagnosis of pneumonia in children.

e23050 Background: Chest X ray (CXR) has been the most common screen procedure for detection of lung cancer. However, if patients had old inflammatory shadows such as tuberculosis, calcification and fibrotic changes, it would become increasingly difficult to detect the lung cancer. In that case, the previous CXR helps the detection of new shadows. We examine whether the repeat participants (pts) who received the medical checkup annually, may improve the rate of lung cancer detection. Methods: Our clinic “MedCity21” was a university outpatient clinic to undergo a complete medical checkup in private health screening program. The pts with abnormalities detected in CXR were announced by call request and invited to our specialty clinic for chest CT scan as further examination. We examined the varieties of abnormal shadows by CXR and CT scans in recent 3 years. Furthermore, we compared the differences between the repeat and the first-time pts using the chi-square tests. Results: In 2016, 2017 and 2018, a total of 10020, 11925 and 12540 pts were enrolled, respectively. The CXR abnormalities for further examinations were detected in 282 (2.8%), 344 (2.9%) and 335 (2.6%) pts, respectively. After the call requests, 203 (72.0%), 239 (69.4%) and 239 (71.3%) pts received chest CT scan in our clinic. In 2016 and 2017, 7 and 9 pts were diagnosed as lung cancer within 12 months follow-up. In 2018, 6 pts were diagnosed as lung cancer, and another 4 pts were now observed. The numbers of lung cancer detections by CXR per 100,000 people were 70.0, 75.5 and ≥47.8, respectively. The repeat / first time pts in 2018 were 6898/5642 pts (55/45%), and 142/193 pts (2.1/3.4%) had CXR abnormalities (p < 0.01), respectively. The varieties of abnormal shadows by CT scans showed that 8.3/20.8% of old inflammatory shadows (p < 0.01), 11.9/20.7% of nodule or GGO (p = 0.47), 12.8/12.3% of Mycobacterial infections or suspected (p = 0.46), and 11.0/6.9% of acute bacterial infections (p = 0.98). Lung cancer was detected in 3/3 pts (p = 0.86), respectively. Conclusions: The repeat pts had significantly lower rate of CXR abnormalities detection, and the first time pts had higher rate of error detection old inflammatory changes as significant. In private health screening program, the repeat pts may have higher profits for the exclusion of lung cancer than the first time pts.

Therefore, early and accurate diagnosis is essential to control disease progression. Radiological examination plays a crucial role in the early identification and management of infected patients. OBJECTIVE The aim of this review was to identify the diagnostic value of different imaging modalities used for diagnosis of COVID-19. METHODS A comprehensive literature search was conducted using the PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases. The keywords <i>diagnostic imaging, radiology, respiratory infection, pneumonia, coronavirus infection</i> and COVID-19 were used to identify radiology articles focusing on the diagnosis of COVID-19 and to determine the diagnostic value of various imaging modalities, including x-ray, computed tomography (CT), ultrasound, and nuclear medicine for identification and management of infected patients. RESULTS We identified 50 articles in the literature search. Studies that investigated the diagnostic roles and imaging features of patients with COVID-19, using either chest CT, lung ultrasound, chest x-ray, or positron emission topography/computed tomography (PET/CT) scan, were discussed. Of these imaging modalities, chest x-ray and CT scan are the most commonly used for diagnosis and management of COVID-19 patients, with chest CT scan being more accurate and sensitive in identifying COVID-19 at early stages. Only a few studies have investigated the roles of ultrasound and PET/CT scan in diagnosing COVID-19. CONCLUSIONS Chest CT scan remains the most sensitive imaging modality in initial diagnosis and management of suspected and confirmed patients with COVID-19. Other diagnostic imaging modalities could add value in evaluating disease progression and monitoring critically ill patients with COVID-19.
